just a scary reminder that Apple can flip a switch and the whole works can come tumbling down. Reason enough not to be totally dependent on them.
Nope. Wrong move.Update 2: In a statement to TechCrunch, Apple says it is working with Google to fix the certificate issue. "We are working together with Google to help them reinstate their enterprise certificates very quickly."
Forgive me as I don’t understand all of that, so I have a question.
Will my gmail app stop working? What about google photos? As of now, they are working.
Absolutely right. That's exactly the reason I still carry a BlackBerry (OS10) device around. Don't put all your eggs in one basket...just a scary reminder that Apple can flip a switch and the whole works can come tumbling down. Reason enough not to be totally dependent on them.

Too much abuse of power
I wonder if Google will retaliate by withholding the rumored $9B/year they give Apple to look the other way on Google's other questionable practices by making Google the default search engine on iOS Safari.
if facebook pulled their app and google pulled their apps, people would leave the iPhone. It would be bad for apple if these companies can't play nicely.
Any of them can. Except google has FAR more control of the internet.just a scary reminder that Apple can flip a switch and the whole works can come tumbling down. Reason enough not to be totally dependent on them.
Agree. Facebook and Google abusing their power. Glad Apple is fighting back.

Um they pay that because they gain more when people use their search, no? So they'd be punishing themselves if they did that.

Or, some people would leave Facebook and Google services and stick with the Apple ecosystem.
Don't become so dependent on them. I've already ditched facebook. And even though I have had a gmail account since gmail launched in beta I ditched it too and moved everything to icloud. I trust apple far more than I trust anyone else. Though none of them are perfect.PRoblem here is Apple has some power but not ultimate power because many users need Google and Facebook services more than they need Apple to punish Google and Facebook.
It's likely this will be resolved by the end of the week.
Apple will hem and haw about how they can't use the certs this way. Execs at Google and FB will apologize. New certs will be issued.
In a way, this is good and bad. Good because Apple can stop these sorts of apps from being used. Bad because I'm not sure I'm comfortable with Apple having this much control over other large companies.
what is the apple alternative for youtube?
Of course they'll get them back. When they stop doing what they're doing. Apple got their attention. All should be well now. For awhile at least. Hopefully. So FB has theirs back already and now it looks like Google will too. So was this Apple just doing it to show FB and Google they could/would? Or what got them reinstated? $$?
This is kind of funny - like a “David and Goliath” remark. Apple is certainly one of the “big boys”.Apple is not afraid to throw hands with the big boys. This should be fun.
Google was somewhat up front. Not completely. And facebook said almost nothing about it. Facebook has done experiments on users before without their knowledge. Using their accounts to target them in an attempt to sway political beliefs. All without their knowledge. They got busted for that. But they still are doing it. They're not just taking your data to better advertise to you. They are paid by outside political and lobbyist groups to manipulate you and your data helps them do that. With facebook and google YOU are the product. They didn’t abuse user privacy. The app in question had to be downloaded by users and was up front about the data it collected. The problem is the Apple doesn’t permit apps on their store to do that so Google used an alternative Apple licence that didn’t require distribution via the App Store. Apple didn’t like that either.
Nothing to do with privacy. Everything to do with Apple licences.
It has nothing to do with any of that. Only their custom internal apps and custom internal beta tests. Nothing to do with any consumer apps. What does this "Pre-release versions of iOS apps like Google Maps, Hangouts, Gmail, and more stopped working today" actually MEAN? My Gmail is working. Google Maps once had satellite images of the 400-home development behind my house, but recently they display only about 33 of the houses - as though they went back a year or more. Just this past November the construction showed it to be more than 50% complete. Something fishy going on. Wonder if it's related.
Curious what Lucy must be thinking watching this as she readies her QC/Apple verdict.![]()
They can update them. Enterprise accounts are separate from itunesconnect -- the OP's apps will not be affected. No, they just can't update them.
Internal apps, not consumer apps.I'm not sure Apple can win this game of chicken. People are hooked on Facebook and Google more than they are iPhones.
