Blizzard has already released a ARM native world of warcraft client. I'm shocked they achieved that so quickly. And I'm very curious how it performs on the M1.

Whatever M number they use next, they’d better choose the number greater than the UK motorway (M898 in Scotland). If they go straight to M899, this should prevent thieves from hijacking the truck, in the UK at least 😆
 
I'd love to see this tech in server rooms. Being able to have far more computing power for the same power and cooling load would be amazing.

It is kind of happening already. Amazon offers ARM based cloud servers already now and claims them to be the most bang for the buck. The AWS Graviton processors have been designed by ARM Holdings and are based on ARM Neoverse core. They are instruction set compatible with Apple M1 (ARMv8).

The fastest computer in the world is Japanese Fukagu. And, ta-dah, it is based on ARM processors (by Fujitsu), ARMv8 instruction set.

The transition may be fast. I asked our DevOps people about the amount of work needed to migrate our cloud services onto ARM platform. The answer was: “It is going to be a tedious job, may take whole afternoon.”

Intel needs to innovate something new pretty quick.
 
I’m genuinely curious to know why they have not introduced a 16” version of this. Or let alone a timeline for an iMac version of this. I mean it certainly seems like a very viable alternative. Or maybe there is some catch. Or do they plan to just cause all of us to collectively **** our pants when they do bring out the new Pro-line M1s with double the performance over anything current at the time?
It's clear that this is the basic entry level chip. In fact, the not redesigning anything physical re-inforces for the base consumer that this is nothing different from the intel mac.

It's clear the iMac is getting a physical redesign, and that the regular MacBook pro's (not this non-pro 2 port 13inch one)/mac pro's are getting a much much better chip. My guess is that the iMac's will offer the M1 AND the pro chip in the relative price tiers so they couldn't release the iMac's till the pro chip comes out.

It is SO HARD to wait for the upcoming iMacs right now.

But I know it's the right thing to do. I've always had an iMac, always found it was the perfect computer for me.

There with you, I have a 2020 high end and expecting it to last quite a few years.
However... for portability purposes a MacBook Air sounds like a fun machine, which I don't need at all because I'm at home 100%. Sounds like an amazing co-machine to build and test M1 things though.
 
Remember when the G3 came out and everyone was like, "OMG--look at how fast...compared to the Pentium/PII"

I feel like the M1 is a revival of the G3 days.
I remember how fast my iBook G3 with 900MHz back in 2003 with OS X 10.3 Panther felt. I even added an additional 512MB of RAM to the soldered in 128MB for a MASSIVE 640MB 😂. I would open up all my apps and hit the exposé button to show them all running at once to make my PC friends weep 😎

I think I'm going to spring for the new Mac mini. My 2018 mini with an 8 gb eGPU is a snail compared with that machine. I'm currently spending a lot of my time just waiting for videos to render.

UPDATE: I did it. I ordered the new mini with 16 gb RAM and a 2 tb SSD. Those choices mean it won't ship to me until mid-December. Even maxed out, this computer was hundreds of dollars cheaper than my current mini (which was already a year old when I ordered it). I already have a CalDigit dock, so I won't have any connectivity issues.

The 2020 Intel Macbook Pro numbers seem awfully off. I can see how all of these machines would be all in the same ballpark. I don't see how the 13" would be nearly half the speed of the 16", while using up twice as much power.

It’s not necessarily using more power. It has a smaller battery.

Likely because bigger faster M chips for the 16" and iMac Pro are still in Srouji's secret undergound lair being tweaked for even more performance (and yield).

Developers (and not just Mac and iOS app developers) are going to buy a ton of these new Macs, from the 13" Air to whatever new Pro's eventually appear. That is going to ensure even more applications will become available for the Mac ecosystem.

macos is built on BSD. I see no reason why you can't install either. Does the T2 chip block the install of a different OS?
My guess is that native Apple Silicon Docker images with BSD and Linux are or will be available for M1 Macs soon. I'm waiting on Apple Silicon Docker images with Tensorflow to see how fast these new beasts can do ML training.
 
There have been speculation that Apple might eventually want to put their silicon in their data centres and the current mac Pro comes in a rackmount version, so maybe not the M1 but who knows what future AS could bring :)
I’d be shocked if this wasn’t rolled into their 2030 carbon neutral roadmap as a KEY part of it. Apples data centers (currently including Azure and AWS) consume enormous amounts of energy.
