I sent 4 older devices to Phobio (Apple's recycling vendor) at the old rates and one was sent back because it had a bad pixel. For the life of me, I cannot see it, so I am not a happy camper but whatever.

Massive depreciation for the Apple Watch. :(

That’s nothing new. The Apple Watch traditionally has always had poor trade-in/release value for the aluminum/stainless models.

Part of the problem and proposed solution is we’ve reached a point where the watch doesn’t need to be released every 12 months, it has matured to the point where 18 is probably more practical. But from Apple’s standpoint, 12 month releases is clearly making them lucrative amounts of money.

I have a 2TB/32GB 2018 6 Core i9 2018 Macbook Pro Apple's trade in value towards a 16" 2019 MBP is $0.00
You are better off going to Pawn Shop or flog it in eBay rather that trade it in. I got net $500.00 after fees for my iPhone 10 on ebay vs $320 from Apple

The value of trade in phones at Samsung always goes up when they launch a new phone. When the S20 comes out, everything will go up by at least $100.

well of course my point was at the same time, Samsung doesn’t offer a better rate for tradeins. In some case it’s even worse.

$440 vs $500, and you’d get samsung phones instead of another iPhone. That’s a double wham on your side.

Remember also you can donate old devices to charities, non-profits, etc and write the value of your taxes.

So "generous" that there is no way that I will be upgrading my iPad Pro, Watch or XR any time this year or next. That's the way incentives work. Cut them and they are definitionally less attractive and taken advantage of.

While I respect your decision, utimately it is your loss. You're missing out on some incredible products.

Missing out a few "incredible products" by not upgrading a few years is not a loss.

I'm still on my iPhone 7 Plus, and yeah it's getting a bit long in the tooth. I'm missing out on Face ID, I'm missing great cameras with native Night mode support, and I'm missing an extra gig of RAM.

But what's the rush really? When it's my time to upgrade, I'd still be getting all said features and some. I'd get a faster A14 chip, probably 5G radio, and even better cameras.

One thing I'm not missing is my wallet for constantly upgrade my Apple stuff every single year (while getting robbed at "Apple trade-ins" program) for a few minuscule improvements.

Apple devices don’t keep their Price over time like they used to. The XS costs now 600€ brand new. Wow.
They are mostly throwaway devices nowadays, with limited lifespan by design. So no wonder resale value plummets.

Apple don’t even give you any money for a Samsung phone, so at least you get something for an iPhone from Samsung. Whenever I’ve put in a Samsung phone on the Apple website in the U.K. for trade in it says it won’t give any money for it but will recycle it free of charge! These aren’t old phones either. These are latest flagship devices or last years phone.

I don’t trade in my iPhones with Apple because I can usually get better prices elsewhere.

Then go buy a Samy. Heck, they steal from Apple anyway, so you'll be getting an "Almost iPhone."

I’m just not trading my iPhone in with Apple. I’ll trade it in elsewhere because I’ll get more money to put towards my next iPhone.

However I’m typing this on iPhone 11 Pro with its TOF sensor which is currently reverse wirelessly charging my AirPods and I just got finished with doing some work on my iPad phone which I turned into desktop computer.

Swappa... I've had good results on there. It helps if all your stuff is in mint condition, though.

I have literally just sold my 2017 MBP for £1350. Whereas, Apple.com offered me £450... Money4MyTech.com offered £848.50 and MusicMagpie.com offered £850. It paid to sell privately, regardless of effort!

At a glance, these still look very generous trade-in values.

Are you okay? Serious question.

iPhone XS Max
Launch Price - $1099 + Tax
Trade In - $500

LOL .. Bruv! I was going to post 'is he under influence' but you beat me to it.

They have become so stingy it's crazy. They have either increased prices, removed supplied accessoires and/or decreased trade-in values for every existing product.

Examples:

- MacBooks not coming with a extension cable anymore. (now you need to buy it if you need it)
- Headphone jack - lightning adapter not included anymore. (now you need to buy it if you need)
- Apple Pencil 2 doesn't come with a extra tip. (now you need to buy it if you need it)
- Increased cpu and ram upgrade costs. (At least here in Europe)
- This article.

I'm sure there is a lot more, but these are a few example that just popped into my head.

since Apple's partnership with Brighthand ... they've become VERY stingy! This kind of action is what many users (and haters on these boards) call Tim Cook greedy! This is unnecessary ... not to mention the sordid business of using Brighthand as a partner when Apple could have EASILY done this themselves:

Boost the trade in for users - by giving Apple Cash, Apple Cash on AppleCard, or Apple Gift Card's (even with a higher bonus incentives on products needing a sales boost / or seasonally)!!

Sometimes I really wonder what Apple marketing team is thinking!??

Pencil 2 does NOT have any extra tips.

I think trade values lowering is normal, time has passed so the trade values go lower. It’s called the passage of time people.

(edited for focus)

Did Apple LOWER their 2014 Mac Mini prices or the 2013 Mac Pro price for the following year and up to 4-5yrs EACH to adjust for market values? NO! So why should Apple (via partnership with Brighthand) be cheating out on trade in values?

These products STILL work and furthermore STILL run the latest OS for each! Unless the trade-in product is damaged, there is no reasonable reason other than greed to reduce the trade-in payout value to a loyal customer!

May I suggest you look at how much Samsung would pay for your once-precious, perfect condition Xs Max?

But then again, direct trade-ins are not the best place to sell an old phone. You basically throw it away (for whatever price they agree on) and make way for newest, shiniest model.

It's hard to believe it, but perpetual payment for minor upgrades is an addictive hobby for some people.

You seem to have learned what it takes for Apple to remain a trillion-dollar company. They're going to have to scrimp a lot more than that if they ever hope to reach $2T. Gooooo, Apple.

$290.00 for an I pad pro when I paid over a $1000.00 I think not for that little bit I will pass it down to one of my kids to play with.

I'll give you an even $300 for it. Pretty please. Papa, papa.

Very correct.

BTW I'm not a Samsung user ... tried one for 3 days back in Samsung Galaxy 2/3 cannot recall because the impression it left me was so horrible! In my mind/experience Samsung is only good for: Storage (USB/SSD), RAM, and screens of any kind.

But at least Samsung give you something for your iPhone. Apple won’t give you anything for a Samsung device. They just insultingly tell you that they will recycle the latest Samsung flagship for free.

Why in the world would Apple give you anything for a Samsung phone? How would that make any sense?

Yep, couldn't disagree with that. But maybe it because Samsung tries really hard to win over iPhone's diehard. Especially in the US. It's so hard to find anyone that don't or never had an iPhone. On the contrary, so many people wouldn't touch Samsung phones.

TL;DR Samsung needs to entice and convert iPhone users. But Apple doesn't have to do the opposite. Hence they just pay $0 for old, crap samsung phones, and put it in Recycle Bin, where they belong.

This is why I stop upgrading every year... especially the Apple watch

I'm still rocking my XS Max and Series 4 Aluminum... I will be upgrading to the 5G iPhone later this year... I'll think about the Apple Watch

depends on what's new for the Apple Watch series 6 compared to the series 5... At 40% off... I wouldn't mind rocking a Titanium Series 5 until 2022
