the iphone's os and desgin is stale and just boring. while Android phones have a lot of variety and android's os is getting better and better with more features than ios apple is falling behind.

i really liked the iphone. i was planning on getting an iphone 5 but after seeing it is just more of the same i decided to ditch my plans and go for a galaxy note 2 instead.

I'm hoping iphone 6 will bring something new.

Apple's main issue is need, not want.

I needed a new phone last year and the iPhone 4 was perfect, so I got that. With the 4S and the 5 I didn't need to upgrade because the 4 did everything I needed.

Every few years I look at replacing my laptop primarily for speed and storage bumps. Apple's new Retina range doesn't interest me at all because storage is so small and expensive (my current 2011 MBP has 2TB of storage). I would like to stay with Apple when I'll be looking to upgrade (maybe next year, maybe year after) but storage has to be increased as I do a lot of video processing.

A phone needs to be the same. When I upgrade it should have something new and great and above all worthwhile for the upgrade. But the way Apple are going they're starting to swim in circles, while Android - despite flooding the market - seem to offer more for less.

Can someone explain where the WSJ got this 65M number from and why they edited their story and no longer reference that figure? I mean who in their right mind would expect Apple to come close to selling 65M of anything in a traditionally soft quarter?

Doesn't matter, unless you bought Apple stock in 2000 it is basically useless. And if you did, congrats, but I hope you cashed in about 5 months ago.

I bought in 2006 at $70 and $78

I think I'm still pretty happy that in 6 years i've made 700~%.

How short is people's memory. Oh wait, I'm probably the oldest member on this discussion.

then that means putting out $600 for everytime an iphone comes out. and in some countries it is around $1000 off contact.

I never said it was cheap. But people are "complaining" that Apple's release schedule makes it impossible to update all the time. That's not true. It might be cost prohibitive for some or many - but you CAN update each cycle.

I think it's a combination of people not wanting a larger Iphone and rumours of Iphone 5S/Iphone 6 so early.

The problem is many people moaning about the larger screen like the 3.5". Android people still want larger than 4" so will not jump to Iphone.

I'm amazed there's demand for the latest Ipad if any as that's such a small update.

Many people think Iphone 5 is just like the Iphone 4/4S which is strange because if you actually use it the differences are massive. It feels a whole new phone.

Exactly.

If you look at the teardown of iPod nano 6. The dock connector represents ~30% of the PCB. That isn't a good trade. Maybe this way they can actually build a shuffle with lightning instead of the headphone jack thing.

That's odd. My wife continues to use her favorite dock and built-in auto interface fine using the Apple provided adapters. (I charge mine using the USB cable and an iPad brick). Yes, it would have been nice if they included one with the iPhone 5, but very little has actually become useless.

Timing is never good to get rid of legacy connectors/features, yet Apple has a long history of doing just that. Floppy drives, ADB, ODD, Firewire, ... Gone. Gone. Gone. Not coming back. Use an adapter during the transition period and move on.

Adapters are not free. Does not really matter now. I have switched phones and Apple has probably lost me for good as far as iPhone is concerned. As I stated the change to the connector was not the deciding factor. But the idea of being forced to buy and use kludgy adapters for a very modest upgrade was insulting and a factor in my decision to finally leave the iPhone.

Maps has been beaten to death - many thousands of times. Like I said - works for me and I think 90% of the public. I understand how annoying a faulty maps must be to those who are having issues - but I don't know what people expected Apple to do.....

Maybe iOS 7 will give people the option to switch default apps - I suppose that would solve the problem for many - and Google Maps for iOS certainly is a great offering.

Still find it interesting that Google adds all the functionality Apple wanted to add (now for free on the app store) after Apple dropped them.....those iOS users are worth some $$$ to them I'd imagine.
Where in the heck did you pull that 90% number from? I don't think you have any clue how silly that sounds. The reason Maps has been beaten to death is because it is the worst implementation of navigation ever put on, an otherwise, quality smartphone.

Another indicator that apple is imploding. Folks are tired of over priced apple products. Apple needs more that one design for a phone but doubt it will help. My iPhone 4S will be my last apple product I buy. As much as I don't like android, samsung and other android phones are pretty tempting. Still waiting on Blackberry before deciding. Apple had bleeding edge products. Not anymore.

This is where the flawed thinking comes in. It is not just a "PHONE"! It's a communications device for productivity, networking and staying connected to the office or any hub while on the go.

Innovate or be left behind, period. I'm glad you weren't the person charged with advancing television. Judging by your comments, I'm sure you would have looked at black and white tv and said, "what else are we to do, we've reached the pinnacle!!"

Thanks for your definition of what a modern smartphone is. And I had always thought it was an old analog telephone with rotary dial shrunk into pocketable phone factor! Glad you cleared it all up for me

So are you too suggesting that iPhone 5 in its current form factor represents the old thinking of what a smartphone should be.. and it should undergo "revolutionary redesign" or Apple will be left behind? Because that's what the poster I was replying to was stating.

I would love to hear your concrete ideas of what that "revolutionary / re-designed / re-imagined" iPhone would look like. Because all I see in these threads is people moaning and complaining for no reason, if they don't get something new and shiny every 6 months.

In my opinion that is a naive way to look at the smartphone arena as it stands today. The "phone" part is becoming more and more irrelevant.

OK, you are unhappy that a word "smartphone" has a "phone" in it, I get it. So let's hear it. How would you redesign a smartphone to be radically different from iPhone 5 (or any other leading smartphone) is - a thin slab of SoC/battery covered by a touchscreen.

The funny thing is - so many say they wants a new phone every 6 months. And the same people talk about how expensive the iPhone is and that they can't get that new phone because release cycles are so short.

But funnier still - many of the same people are Apple cheerleaders when it comes to Apple being #1 with their billions of dollars in profit.

It boggles the mind. Upset that iPhones are expensive but excited that Apple is making killer profits.

I have to think that Apple is selling a lot more 4S phones than they anticipated. At my office where we recently got a new BYOD policy every single person that has gone the Apple route has bought a 4S instead of a 5. From what I can tell they don't want to pay the extra $100 for LTE, faster processor and better camera. I will never understand it but this seems to be the way a lot of people think

Oh and they trot out this weeks old story the week before earnings during a "quiet period" when Apple can't respond. Like John Gruber said, anyone who thinks this isn't stock manipulation, I have a bridge to sell you.

Here's some logic.

Perhaps those three things don't matter.

LTE? Maybe they don't do a ton of streaming/surfing where internet speeds matter. Maybe they are more just into email/light web stuff

Faster processor? The 4S is very speedy. Unless you're a gamer - how much more speed do you really need as a general user. Again - if you're mostly just looking at some web surfing and/or email, listening to music - a faster processor could be overkill

Better camera. Well that's always great. But maybe they aren't picture takers and/or have a real camera at home they prefer using. It's not like the 4S camera is bad at all either.

The 4S is a great phone. And why pay an extra $100 if you aren't going to benefit from the "advances"

Whatever. You're just pissed off you didn't sell at $700. Tell me, how much realized gains or dividends have you even made from your Apple stock?

Yes. Except that none of these abominations you call "apps" worked.

They worked perfectly. In a world before 3G data speeds and mass wifi, it was great to be able to get apps on a magazine CD as well as the usual download methods.

How did they not work, care to explain?

It was nice to see you here in the forums to talk about your Apple products and best of luck in the future when you leave to join an Android / Blackberry forum (since you are getting rid of your Apple products).

No. It means putting out the difference between the unsubsidized price of the new model and the market price of a used previous model. They hold their value fairly well the first year. So you really only have to put out about half the unsubsidized price every time, sometimes less if you can sell a little in advance.

10% of the initial investment in the last and only 3 dividend payments.

Seriously, I am more than aware that I've theoretically made nothing until I sell my shares, but at the same time I have been able to leverage the shares value to endorse my business, my home loan, and contracts valued in the millions.

So put that in your pipe and smoke it.
