Wow. Even though the iPhone4 had yet another sales record (with over 1.7 million in 3 days), the iPhone was still outsold by Android by over 2 million. Not bad for Android.

I'm not good with number so maybe I'm wrong, but it appears this doesn't take into account that there are only four (2 available) devices running iOS compared to numerous devices running Android. So, logically, if there are dozens of handsets running the same OS that are available worldwide of course it's going to have more than an OS that's available on two current devices worldwide. It's good to see the break down and I'm sure it means a lot to Apple, but to me it just seems unbalanced.

There are more stupid people in the world, than non-stupid people. Therefore, if a thing is marketed enough, stupid people will buy it. Capitalism in no way guarantees victory for a superior product.

Who are these stupid and non-stupid people you are referring to and what is the superior product?

Sorry, my bad. I've moved to the green side. The iPhone tends to be only available on money grabbing a$$hole service providers, seems to be an international phenomenon, and to me the service is just as important as the handset, so I couldn't take it anymore.

Don't worry, I'm still a mac fan boy.

I've seen exactly 1 android phone being used "in the flesh". I don't know who is buying all of these. Everyone I see has an iPhone, or some random other phone, but not android. They must be around though, as these numbers aren't made-up...

There are some things you have to remember.
The iPhone has a very clear look to it that can not be mistaken for something else. Also often iPod Touches will get mistaken for an iPhone and it is even worse if the iPod is in a case. If you saw me playing on my iPod in its case you would think it is a iPhone if you do not look too closely.

Blackberry is the same way. Very few things look like a blackberry other than a blackberry.

Now if you take android phones you have to look at those much more closely to identify them as an Android phone. Plus their are quite a few different designs out there on them so even harder to notices it. They can be mistaken very easily for a dumb phone.

Now in my Linear Algebra class of about 15 students there was 1 iPhone, at least 3 blackberries and 2-3 android phones and 1 nokia smart phone.
That should show you that it depends what you are looking for.

Hopefully MS can make a dent as well and Apple and RIM keep selling. Rather not see Android grab some obscene marketshare over the next couple years. Should be safe that it won't happen, I heard some Android fan say,

"Feels great to be a part of it!"

Part of what? You didn't design sh**, didn't make a phone.... kind of lost on what that even meant.

Anyway my V-tech home phones is > than anyone's phone here. :p

I have not seen an iPhone 4 in the wild here in Canada. I guess only polar bears have them.;)

They win a platform where Apple cannot take anti-competitive measures to avoid the free market forces.

So Android lives in a world with no rules, and iPhone lives in a world with rules. What happens when you give a child no rules?

I am very surprised that Apple sold any phones in the quarter before the iP4 launch. Why would anyone buy a new iPhone when a far better one is coming out in a few weeks.

Most people buy Android phones because they are stuck on a network that does not support the iPhone or because the iPhone is sold out. If the rumors are true that the iPhone is coming to all US networks and Apple will be outsourcing to new manufacturers, I see no way Google can maintain their market share.

If you remove the basic constraints holding back iPhone sales, I can see them passing up Google and RIM's combined numbers.

HELLO... This report is presenting skewed data and the headline of this news item needs to be changed. Nowhere in this article does it say that Android surpassed iOS for anything other than JUST SMARTPHONES! Gartner's Android vs iOS numbers do not factor an additional 13 million in non-smartphone iOS sales (iPad, iPod Touch). Once you add in the roughly 3.2 million iPads and 8 million iPod Touches sold, you will see Q2 numbers for iOS are MUCH larger than Android - estimated at 20 million for iOS vs 10 million for Android. Why don't we have a table showing iOS vs Android across ALL mobile devices? Because there would be no headlines. Again, anyone reading this would think Android is outselling iOS, but that is absolutely not the case.

The headline of this article says "... Android Surges Past iOS" which is patently false. It should say "Android Smartphone Sales Surge Past iPhone, iOS Maintains Overall Lead". That would be accurate, responsible journalism.

Android will sell ship on a lot of devices. Given the multi-manufacturer model, no doubt more than Apple.

But 2 points:
1) This particular study doesn't define devices called 'iOS'. Just iPhones, or touches and iPads as well?

2) Having gone down the '2-fer' route (buy one, get one free), stats about Android are now permanently in doubt in my mind. Anyone can give away product. Not the same as selling it.

Why would anyone be getting upset about market share..?!

We're (largely) Mac users remember? When did market share alter a) the value of and b) the quality of a product?

Apple are doing well for a one handset manufacturer. I suspect we'll see Android continue and beat RIM and Symbian. Android will probably be the "Windows" of the mobile world.. Unless MS really pull their fingers out. :)
I like Apple's model.. Their "draconian" app store policies are one of the defining factors in establishing iOS as a strong gaming platform. There's never going to be a perfect platform for everyone and everything.

I've never even seen a blackberry in the wild in the UK, it's weird.

Finally, someone on the forums that gets what is really going on. Apple has NO interest in market share dominance as long as their share is sufficient share to maintain a developer community, and, from that BUSINESS perspective, they have no worries with iPod, iPhone, iPad and future products. IMO Apple has now WON the desktop war as well. They have captured the profitable sectors of the desktop/laptop sector and have established a secure developer community to maintain that dominance. This is why they are larger than MS in market cap and cash-on-hand and quickly approaching them in net profits.

Right. But I think that model only works if Apple maintains the lead in overall software and hardware technology and ease of use. At the rate the Android OS and the Android devices are progressing I'm not oo sure how long the technology lead will last. We aren't talking about Microsoft here, Google is a different animal.

This reminds me of the Windows vs. Mac OS battle in the 80's/90's. It's likely to play out in a similar fashion.

You mean where one OS gains total market dominance, resulting in a virus/malware/spyware-plagued computing experience, shoddy app quality, garbage commoditized hardware and an overall lack of innovation over time? Sounds good to me.

ANDROID FTW! (I'll be happy with my "niche" iOS device, thanks Google.)

So Android lives in a world with no rules, and iPhone lives in a world with rules. What happens when you give a child no rules?

Innovation. The free market is a good thing. It is also not devoid of rules.

Who cares, it's a report about smartphones. Android isn't even available for MP3 players.

The carriers give it away for free, not the device manufacturers - ya know, the ones putting android on it (which means they are getting the sale).

Didn't I just see you argue that OS X is secure even though it's market share is growing?

I think Android is a good product and if there was no iOS, I would have an Android device. I certainly hope that they have a bigger marketshare since they are on all carriers and have several manufacturers plus the buy one get one free deal. Pick what works for your specific needs. I choose Apple.

I am not lying when I say that my friend Monica wants an iPhone just for one thing, Angry Birds.

In addition to the above quote, this is only the US market. Apple has a global presence the Android OS doesn't!

Why do they win?

I think the fact they are moving so quickly means they could win developers. As more and more people start using Droid devices the iPhone will begin to look like a waste of time to develop for.

I hope this won't be the case but Android consistently looks better and better.
The desktop look looks yummy too.......
