You may not realize it but most of the content from networks are broadcast in 720P.
Or 1080i which is no better than 720P.

And that might be relevant if I watched network tv.
DirecTV is mainly 1080P for the channels I watch.
Premium content, but not network cap.

I bought a used ATV1 on eBay for $65. I like being able to steam music from my PC to my A/V Receiver, and ripped movies to my HDTV. The remote app for the iPhone is nice too, I don't even have to turn on my TV when all I want is music. Searching YouTube is also a lot more convenient with the iPhone app.

For me, the 720P vs 1080P is a non-issue. I could tell a difference between my Blu-ray player and ATV, when I played the same movie (Tangled) from a Blu-ray disc and a ripped copy of the included DVD back-to-back. Is 1080P better? Yes. Am I going to miss out on the convenience of this very inexpensive easy-to-use product because it displays in a lower res? No.

After all, my satellite is is 720P too...

I you are a videophile and demand the best picture, I understand and appreciate your insistence on the best. I am willing to trade the best picture for the convenience of a product I'm using every day. ATV isn't for everyone (PS3/Xbox owners), but I bet ATV3 will up the bar. They have to spend all the money on something, right?

Downloads are always going to have to rely on compression. In time compression technologies will get better, but it is going to be years until we see a download equal a BD in total picture and audio quality. Even today MP3s and AAC files can't compare in quality to a CD. The difference is much less then what it used to be, but if one wants the best sound quality possible CD still offers the best experience.
Since we are being semantic everything pretty much relies on compression. Uncompressed HD can run as high as 8gigs a minute!;) Streaming is certainly more compressed than Blu-ray though. And cable/satellite is typically much more compressed than OTA TV signals.

And that might be relevant if I watched network tv.

OTA network crap is most likely less compressed.

It sounds like you compared 1080p to an SD DVD. Also how the video is compressed is way more important than whether it's 720p or 1080p.

If people stopped buying this then Apple might make it better. As it stands, it's probably one of the worst products Apple sells - up there with the Magic Mouse and Final Cut Pro X.

If people stopped buying it, Apple will discontinue it. The faster the product sells, the faster the improvements (iPhone, iPad).

I thought about it for a minute and realized that it would be a waste of $99. Why invest in a 1080p big screen HDTV and a nice True HD - DTS HD surround sound system to play these low bit rate picture and sound audio files?

As we've learned from music, people will ALWAYS sacrifice quality for convienence.

Am I the only one that loves my ATV? I have 3 in my home, one for each TV.

I was so ready to buy one this Christmas, until I discovered the PS3 I own did the same thing... only better.

Until Apple puts in some serious HD ability, this device will remain a curiously interesting addition instead of a serious TV must-have. As for the nay-sayers with their 1080 doesn't-mean-crap argument: every year 1080 is becoming more and more prevalent in TV and it is the future resolution that is here now. Apple has to step up the ATV asap.

Just because your PS3 is a 1080P device does not mean the content you stream is in 1080P. Few people have internet connections fast enough to stream it (unless you like frequent refreshes and stutters) without a big buffer... which is also a big load time.

To you 1080 comment, it's because TV companies know people don't know any better and think "oh, that's better. I'll buy this set for $300 more." 1080P and 720P cannot be discerned by the human eye 51" and under... it's a fact... look it up. Now, some 1080P sets have better refresh rates that will give a better picture and and other things that reduce shadowing and blur. However, that's not because of the pixels on the screen! So no... 1080P really doesn't mean crap. Even at full 1080P the human eye cannot take all that visual information in.

I also wouldn't say the PS3 is better... the interface leaves LOTS to be desired... and that fan noise...

Dear Apple,
please open a freak'n appstore for this device, then watch it turn from a hobby to a business.

I use my ps3 for most things but airplay and mirroring iOS devices gets a lot of use at my house. The family loves it.

I wonder how many people roaming around here ranting about how "crap" 720p appears compared to 1080 are mistaking DVD with 720p. As Lethal pointed out, DVD is not 720p; DVDs are 480p at best... and DVD is based on crappy mpeg2 compression.

Love my atv2. And I'm connected to an epson 1080 projector and 7.1 surround. With the right receiver you'll get bang for your buck alright. ATV shows like family guy/glee are in dolby digital, which my receiver knows to spread around 7 speakers. Sick.

Add to that internet radio, music, access to movies and all the rest that I can control perfectly through iphone/ipad.

What else for $99 can do this much?

YouTube out again

YouTube on my AppleTv is not connecting, again. Clicked on my subscriptions and it says not Content ! Unable to connect to YOuTube. It happened last week as well and it came back. Now, it's out for two days now.

Same thing only better? Really?

I have both an Apple TV an a PS3 which plays blu ray. To be completely honest the picture quality on Blu Ray isn't tht much better. I have over 100 movies and 400 TV shows that I stream from my iMac to te Apple TV that look great. I did a compareason test between the PS3 and the Apple TV and the Blu ray was slightly better, and I bet most people couldn't tell the differences.

You better go back and look again DirecTV which I also have broadcast most of their channels in 1080i or 720p

Seems like it should have been refreshed by now. Did they hold it back due to needing all the A5 chips they can make for the higher than expected demand for iPhones & iPads?

Just waiting for an upgrade that includes A5, Bluetooth 4.0, Thunderbolt, 1080p, 802.11ac, iOS 5, more storage, ability to add external storage, and App Store. Will buy a sack full of 'em when it comes.

My original Apple TV still works just fine, and I really can't see a reason to upgrade right now. In five years so little has changed.

If Apple would offer a 1080p ATV3 with apps for that TV(like HBO Go, etc), the thing would fly off the shelves. I'm just one of the many waiting patiently for that upgrade of ATV3, but if that upgrade takes the form of an actual TV versus a box, I won't be buying one. If the box is still a box, I'm looking to buy several

Am I the only one that loves my ATV? I have 3 in my home, one for each TV.

Nope!

I also have 3 in my home, one for each TV. Everyone in my house uses them daily. Of course it could be better, or have better features (there is ALWAYS gonna be "better" or "more")... that's the nature of technology and its evolution.

At $99, it's totally worth it to me to be able to stream all of my iTunes content (purchased & ripped) and stream Netflix. The integration with the rest of my Apple devices is great, too.

Anyone figure out how to fix YouTube problem on their ATV2, I can't get mine to connect and was wondering if someone on here was able to fix it?

Amen to that. I'd spend good money on all of the UK TV catchup apps in a heartbeat - it pains me so much to have to crank up my electricity-guzzling PS3 just to watch iPlayer or 4OD. I just can't understand Apple's reluctance to provide an app store for the Apple TV, it's surely a no brainer. At least for us outside of the US.

I watch iPlayer and 4OD on my Apple TV using AirPlay from the iPad but native apps would be a welcome addition.
