Apple today updated its free Sports app for the iPhone with several new features and changes, including Live Activities support.

The latest version of the Apple Sports app on iOS 18 and watchOS 11 introduces Live Activities support for all teams and leagues available within the app. This feature enables live scores and play-by-play information on the iPhone's Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island on newer models, and on the Apple Watch starting with watchOS 11.

Apple previously said Live Activities are no longer available in the Apple TV app on iOS 18.

Apple Sports provides scores and more for the following leagues:

  • NFL
  • NCAAF
  • MLS
  • MLB
  • NBA
  • WNBA
  • NCAA basketball (men's and women's)
  • NHL
  • NWSL
  • Premier League
  • Bundesliga
  • LaLiga
  • Liga MX
  • Ligue 1
  • Serie A

Here's what else is new in Apple Sports version 2.0, including a new drop-down menu and search page, according to Apple's release notes:
• Added a new drop-down menu that makes it faster and easier to jump between your leagues and a new search page to browse the ones you want to check in on.
• With new optimizations for the WNBA and MLB playoffs, Apple Sports is the best place to stay up to speed all postseason.
• Follow live as last year's MLS and Liga MX champions compete for Campeones Cup.
Apple Sports is a free app available in the App Store.

I forgot this existed. Going to test it out against the yahoo sports (formerly sportacular) that I’ve been using for years.

Edit: after about 2 minutes I deleted it. Too many features in the other app that I use regularly that the apple app just doesn’t have.

"Apple previously said Live Activities are no longer available in the Apple TV app on iOS 18."

This should have been the lede, followed by "... so now you need to get this app if you want to follow live sporting events."

Finally. I've been missing the Live Activities that were previously provided by the TV app and had to install the MLB and NFL apps to make up for it. Now I can just use this and things will be back to normal.

Good to know, will check this out and might be the first use case for me for live activities

I wonder if this will eventually replace the live activity for scores we can currently get through the 'favorite teams' function of the TV app, or if they'll connect them somehow?

Half the sports are soccer. I'm not anti-soccer, but there are other sports than soccer and the American major sports that already get too much coverage. Don't see my favs represented.

I tried this app to see if it would work for college football games. It wasn't good for that, at least in my experience. Scores were updated late (in some cases an hour late) and sometimes not at all. These weren't small teams -- these were teams in the Power 4 conferences.

The update we needed. Going to test this out with the Eagles game tonight before I purge some sports app from my device.
