As a film maker, I will tell you all that unless there is a reason within the script or plot etc. there is no reason whatsoever to put anything but Apple products in as props unless you have absolutely no grasp of cinematography!!!

The film makers probably do have a grasp of cinematography, but they probably also have a grasp of “someone has to pay for all this”...

has anyone seen iCarly on disney? all they use are apple products, both laptops and phones, with a pear icon covering the apple. i don't really understand. do they want to use apple products because they're sharper looking without all the bs to use the identifiable product?

I think the makers are poking fun at product placement, they still use apple products though, just replace it with a pear, alot of nickelodeon shows feature the same pear logo

And if you do have a grasp on cinematography you'll understand that the set designer cares about what type of computer is used a heck of a lot more than you do. :p

I direct tv ads and promos for a living, and given a free reign it would be a Mac every time. I had to use a beige PC once though, the client wanted the scene to be 'less aspirational'.

Just for example with the Metal Gear Solid Thing. Here are some photos.

Regarding the use of Dells...I can only think of off the top of my head their use in Swordfish.

Alias always had racks of Dell server boxes in the background, and characters would often use Dell laptops to hack the bad-guys super-ultra-secure defense systems.

As for Wall-E, there's lots of little Apple references, including the Auto Pilot's voice which from MacTalk, the use of an older video-iPod to watch "Hello Dolly," Wall-E's full-charged sound, an Apple keyboard in the background, and frankly I think Wall-E looks like a Mac Plus with a set of binoculars sitting on top.

That's different! They are consumables and are everywhere!

Laptops aren't - and in a movie, they probably give it some consideration on what to use.

I dunno, I don't think I've ever seen a laptop nicer-looking than the iBook, why would they choose something less attractive?

They're on TV here all the time. All the major BBC shows seem to have Apple laptops. MP3 player is simply byword for an iPod too. Don't watch many films or US TV shows at all.

A few years ago Tiny used to run adverts for their laptops but would display OSX on the screen, WTF :D

My thoughts exactly.

Well if you knew anything about directors, you would know a lot of them like to create a world in their films and get really hands on in every aspect of what they paint onto the silver screen. Nothing makes it into my movies without my ok. And yes the set designer and props are going to take care of their duties, but under MY direction

Cinematography is more than just lighting. It is the entire visual aspect of the film and everything in it.

Another aspect of this thread topic I think is interesting is how dominantly any media showing something online almost always shows it in Safari :) It sure has the nicest interface!

What about all the programs where its indirect placement? Like "Brothers and Sisters" where they cover the Apple Logo with a sticker but you can blatently see it's a Macbook.

I bet if you counted those instances then the stat would be even higher.

anyone remember "just shoot me"

there they either had the old imacs and ibooks or the had some other laptop but there was alway a post-it note right where the apple logo on the back would be.

Seemed to be on purpose

Thats most obvious, they look cooler...how often would you see some beige tower with an off color dvd drive in a movie?

This instance isn't from a film, but this thread is wandering into general product placement and Apple references, so...

I was watching an old The Simpsons yesterday. Homer was using a computer and it was obviously supposed to be an old CRT iMac. There was also a joke in the first episode after the original iPhone price cut where the family was walking through a mall and a voice through the speaker system says, "Attention shoppers: iPhones, now 20 cents."

The character Hank Scorpio is compared to Steve Jobs in the DVD commentary.

Steve Jobs has also shown up as a character in South Park.

Paid placement

Actually, I met a woman recently whose job it is to clear products used in movies/tv with the companies in question before they are shot. She said production designers seem to love Apple stuff but they are among the most reluctant companies she deals with.

In an old X-Files show, Gillian Anderson is walking through one of those high tech, all white, sterilized genetics laboratories, and guess what computer is sitting on the front desk, it's fruit logo facing towards the screen?

Also, is that computer voice "Bruce" only on macs? Because in is used on TV sometimes.

In those cases there was no product placement and they didn't want it to look like there was. Face it, a big glowing Apple could be considered distracting. Without it, nobody but us Mac geeks would recognize the computer is a Mac.

haha yea!! When he was done charging himself, he made the mac startup sound. I noticed that right away:D

I haven't noticed any other things in wallE though. But apple products are in movies so much I notice them a lot. The iPhone is in one tree hill too.

When EVE "kisses" Wall*E in space he clearly makes the "Ping" alert sound.
