Just because it‘s discontinued on the Apple store doesn‘t mean you can‘t buy it anymore.

I don‘t get the fuss here in the comments. You don‘t need to buy a Studio Display just because that‘s the only thing available on the Apple online store.
Correct. But the fact that Apple discontinued it is very telling about them. I didn’t mention anything else, did I?

If you take the $1300 that the UltraFine launched at in 2016 and adjust it along with U.S. inflation it's somewhere around $1560 today. The Studio Display is a also significantly better product.
Normally inflation doesn't apply to computer parts. Actually consumer spending on computers/parts usually lowers the calculated inflation rate because the price-for-performance decreases over time, even if the price stays the same.

The thing is, 5K displays are still a niche product area even after 5 years, so there's little competition. You only save a couple hundred $ buying an alternative to the Studio Display, which isn't worthwhile if you care at all about the built in accessories and the first-class TB support.

currently prices of shipping and such do impact computers and parts but I agree that computers are less impacted with inflation.
Otherwise a product like the iPhone SE would sell at 500 USD by now

I’d have to disagree. There’s no improvement in the quality of the display, aside from brightness. Even with inflation, you shouldn’t be paying the same amount of money for tech that is 6+ years old.

It’s too bad that there’s not a lot of competition for for these types of monitors. I find it crazy that there has not been a single product from another company to match the UF 5k spec-to-spec. Seems like the main focus is on gaming monitors, which don’t usually prioritize brightness, pixel density, and color accuracy.

Buying that ultra-expensive monitor from 2016 wouldn’t make any sense today
There were a litany of QC issues with it reported by a lot of users. I wouldn't be surprised if LG did axe it.
LG quietly refreshed the UltraFine 5K in 2019, fixing the plethora of issues with the first model. That's the sku I picked up, and It's been rock solid over the last 2+ years.

Honestly, despite my lackluster reception upon its launch, I admittedly would recommend the Studio Display over the LG 5K at this point. However, if you—like me—already own it, I don't think upgrading makes the most sense.

And how is it telling? That they prefer to sell their own stuff? Isn’t that their reason of existence?

So clever… so once my 2020 27” intel iMac gets outdated, malfunctions or whatever I would have to pay the same to just get a display with same resolution and size. 24” is too small. Even the 27” is borderline of being too small for my work. Once you get used to that retina resolution you don’t want to go back. Really clever played, Apple

Ultra wide: I see that more as a disadvantage. When I have an online conference with colleagues or clients, I don't want them to see much of my office (especially if it's not cleaned up) but only me.
I wouldn't be surprised if the default frame is actually cropped in, and it only uses the ultra-wide edges when utilizing the Center Stage feature. We'll see, though.

Here are some of the ways the Studio Display is superior to the UltraFine 5K
  • 600 nits of brightness (vs. 500 nits)
  • Aluminum design (vs. cheap looking black plastic)
  • Six speaker system (vs. two)
  • True Tone capable (vs. not)
  • USB-C ports are 3.1 Gen 2 (vs. 3.0)
  • 12MP ultra-wide camera with Center Stage (vs. 1080p)
  • Three microphone array (vs. one)
It's a really compelling product, although I do wish that it had ProMotion or mini-LED backlighting.
Wished the same but considering the current offer, price would probably make me bloodless. To be fair LG comes with height adjustment so 2259€ vs 1399€ LG is not so great: added 860€ for “not crucial” speakers and 12MP camera and nicer enclosure…would prefer added price reflected better visual specs.

Why compete if you are the competition.
This is just to sell more overpriced Studio Displays, obviously, not because the Ultra Fine is outdated or anything.
Classic Apple. Shame I’m not a shareholder though.
Maybe you SHOULD be more a shareholder than a fan considering the revenue strategy of Apple (post Jobs).
Don't get me wrong, I'm more of a user than an equity player. I wish corporate behaviour was a bit more sustainable and customer obsessed.

Makes sense for Apple to remove the LG from their store. I have 2 of the 5k ultra fines and also a 4k as well. They are superb monitors, and integrate seamlessly with MacOS. The Studio Display seems a very compelling product and not unreasonably priced considering, but the differences between it and the 5k are not significantly enough for me to contemplate upgrading.

So you complain that when your 27 inch iMac dies, you won’t be able to replace it with a new 27 inc iMac, which is too small anyway?

The new configuration allows you to buy a Mac Mini or Mac Studio with whatever screen you like. Everybody happy.
and when your Mac dies, you won’t have to throw out your integrated screen. Even better!

snagged one the day after the March 8th event, saw this writing on the wall. Its the same monitor (minus center stage) and its was $300 cheaper...easy win

Main objective: Maximize the sales of the Mac Studio Display. Therefore, Apple wants you to spend your money on its own newly Mac Studio Display.
and...when they see a decline in the buying spree for the 27" Studio Monitor, Apple will release a 24" version. It is all about the numbers and determines when they release something. Currently, the 27" kind of looks funny if you pair it up with the current 24" iMac. Makes sense to eventually release a 24" Studio mini Monitor, but we may have to wait for awhile..

With whatever screen I like should be retina like resolution + min 27”… can you please point me to one of these displays that are so much cheaper than the base iMac 27” used to that there’s also room for adding a computer? Like just base Mac mini. Point being a 27” display in retina used to “come with a computer”. Now you roughly pay the same for a similar display without the computer.

I’m not saying that the studio display isn’t worth the money with all it’s bells and whistles and specs.

Just saying that there’s gap left now and to get a similar display plus computer as I have today I would have to pay significantly more.

I don’t care or know much about color spaces, nits etc. I don’t do graphics, so a lot of it is over my needs. Same with build in speakers and webcam. No need for it. But I do like the resolution and size.

It’s like going to shop to buy milk and then being told that you have to buy coffee as well to buy milk.

Of course, the LG Monitor(s) was to fit the gap until or "if" they decided to get back in the monitor business. Makes sense to discontinue it. Interested if they might also discontinue to 24" soon to make people buy the 27", but maybe they won't...UNLESS at 24" in on the horizon. I would consider getting an 24" version, but probably the price would be $999 or above and a hard decision as a decent 24" monitor now costs around $300.

4480 x 2250. They already make a 218 ppi 24" display with the M1 iMac.
Just gut the 24" iMac it and sell it as a monitor and call it a day. Apple would make a grip of cash for those who want to add a monitor to their 24" iMac. Even go with colors.

I mean .... it's the same panel slightly updated, so - abeit minimally - better. The webcam is better, the speakers are better, the features are better, the build quality is better, and it costs only slightly more. There really is no reason to keep selling the LG screen. At the same time: people happy with their LG screen would probably see little reason to upgrade. There really isn't much to hate here.
