Just allow laptops to be charged with USB-C like macbooks can.

While I agree having all laptops use USB-C is a good idea, that doesn't make the laptop or charger any more recyclable; and unless an existing charger has the needed power delivery capability you may still need a new one.

Should they also not care about what side of the road you drive on?

What about power outlets?
Should those be different in every building/room depending upon who made the outlet?

Expand this thinking outwards and you quickly see how unworkable and inconvenient it becomes for you .. me .. "us" .. the actual people.
Traffic signs, they're not an e-waste as they go at least 20 years not like a phone that goes max a week ano 2025.

I am all for standards. I will not buy any product that uses micro-USB, Lightning, etc. in the future. But mandating a standard as the EU has one will stifle innovation. Major governmental overreach.

"Innovation" is not the be-all, end-all. I consider sustainability, energy efficiency and an environmental mindset to be far and above more important.

I don't think the EU directive will stifle anything except profit, but even if it did, I don't really care.

They are thinking about e-waste… creating potentially new e-waste with unsold phones
Well, perhaps they should start worrying about all those grand supermarkets that waste a tonne of food, sell plastic bags (even though they were apparently supposed to be removed from sales), unnecessary plastic packaging and many other things. EU is focusing on Apple while still allowing a tonne of crap products via Chinese stores like Temu. I think those players do far more damage to the environment than Apple with its lightening port products.

Most people benefit from simple convenient interoperability of the port, far far far more than getting anything from some new "innovative" port

People don't tend to like the ports changing ("Innovating") -- it's annoying and expensive to need different cables, adapters, power bricks, etc

I agree. I dislike usb-c and find this switch annoying.

Your home is full of government-mandated standards that make your life better, easier and safer. There are so many all around you right now. So many that nobody even really thinks about because it’s just part of everybody’s normal, everyday life.

Do you have the same level of outrage about each and every one of them? If so, that must be so exhausting. 😂

It's crazy, right?

It's as though some segment of society always has to keep relearning old lessons that LED to the standards, regulations and rules that make things better overall for everyone.

I obviously was referencing lightning as my preferred apple device connector. But that ship has sailed.

I personally couldn't get rid of my lightning cables fast enough. Took an entire bag of them to work to hand out to patients and family who forget their chargers.

Being able to charge my phone, my wife's phone (Pixel), my MacBook, my Dell work laptop, my switch, my kindle, on and on and on, with the same cable?

Wonderful!

And these regulations are for health and safety. You don’t find regulations on the size of a TV, the color of cabinets, etc. Why not?

In the US there is a NEC. Why is that?

What size is your TV? Is it 50 inches? 70 inches? And what is an inch exactly? How do we all agree that one inch is one inch? Is it maybe because of government-mandated standards?

Answer: Yes. Yes it is. The United States Department of Commerce has standardized exactly how long an inch is in the United States.

As I said, there are so many government-mandated standards all around you that it has actually all just become mundane. We don’t even really think about it because these government-mandated standards are so ubiquitous.

This is being overthought. Generally standards apply to health , societal , financial and safety.

There are no standards for the color of cabinets. Why not?

But remember the EU tried to do this with Micro-USB. Would it have been good if they had succeeded then? Of course not.

Just because we all think USB-C is great now (and I contend that while I prefer it because I have other devices that use it, it’s actually worse than lightening) that doesn’t mean in 15 years we might have been able to have something better. But now we won’t because no one is going to invest significant resources into designing a better port without knowing if they’ll be able to convince the EU and its competitors to adopt it.

There are federal standard colors.

There is Federal Standard 10032. And Federal Standard 17255. And Federal Standard XXXXX.

These standards are specifically for government use. You aren’t actually buying “Federal Standard 17773“ at Home Depot. You’re buying “eggshell white” or whatever color name 17773 would be the closest to. And you are also having colors mixed at the store or mixed at home. But the companies that make paint know about these federal standards.

You made the point that standard are there to protect society, protect health, etc. There are no standards governing the shape of an iPhone, other than it meets certain regulatory standards. There are no standards that govern the size of an iPhone. There are no government standards stopping apple from inventing and implementing a new connector.

What? What are you talking about? No, I didn’t. I didn’t make that point at all. Nowhere on this forum did I ever say that. Someone else said that… maybe? But I never said those words.

Wait a second… you said that! That was what you said, lol. What is going on here? 😂

You’re talking about standards being mundane as there are a plethora of them.

Well… no… that’s not what said. I didn’t say standards are mundane. Also I didn’t say “plethora”. I said “ubiquitous”. I’m not trying to be pedantic, but there is a difference in meaning there.

It's the ubiquity of the standards that is mundane.

Anyway, anyway. Sorry, but I don’t even know what this conversation is anymore, lol. Please have a good day. 🙂

Yep, remove a camera and sell the old tech for a starting price of € 499,-

With love from Timmy
Gimme a break. It’s likely gonna have an A18, 8GB RAM, and a lower price than the 14 had even two years on. It’ll be the best value iPhone of all time (except maybe the original SE in 2016 or whatever).
