Thanks for the explanation.
No, users on iOS 14.5 and above can still update to iOS 14.8, because Apple introduced a new mechanism called AlternateSU (Alternate Software Update) that allows OTA updates to 14.8 but not restores in iTunes/Finder, therefore blocking downgrades while still keeping 14.x supported for users who are not ready to update. But this also means that if your phone bootloops, you have no other choice than to update to iOS 15.

On iOS 14.4.2 and below, you can only update to iOS 15 as the AlternateSU mechanism didn't exist yet (unless you use the delayed software updates feature meant for enterprise managed devices, which works in a very similar way only allowing upgrades and not downgrades: https://support.apple.com/guide/mdm/managing-software-updates-mdm02df57e2a/web)
I’m on iOS 14.8, So if I have a problem with my iPhone or iPad and I have to do a restore I cannot do this …so Apple really IS NOT supporting the previous iOS as they said they would! 🤬🤬🤬

So, when they stopped signing iOS 14.8 another site stated maybe Apple is about to come out with an update to iOS 14.8, but, this does not match their pattern, update, then stop signing previous release soon after that. Clearly they were wrong, as there is no update.

I’m so tired of the bugginess of iOS until x.3 or so, I am not updating to iOS 15 yet! Apple needs to get this right! Im writing feedback right now, others care to join?

In iTunes I can backup my iPhone to the computer but I can see it’s telling me there’s an update of 15.0.1 yet I’m on iOS 14.8.
Normally if you want to use restore you are required to update to the latest iOS version.
It looks like they forgot to update iTunes to handle users that want to remain on iOS 14.
I didn’t try to do a restore but it looks like they missed something.

Just wait until either apple force you to go iOS 15 or brick your iPhone iPad etc or they backport CSAM to iOS 14.

You can’t avoid CSAM forever. Sad reality but it is what it is.
I am suspecting Apple will break it by January like clockwork every year where the activity app is all jacked up. (Speaking from past experience for 4 years) 😢

Does this version use my CPU and battery to scan my photos to enable Apple to do its mass surveillance since they're too cheap to do it with their cloud resources?
You mean since they would rather reveal minimal necessary information to the server side instead of all information, as a cloud scan would require? But the answer is no.

I bet you’d not see any difference in battery with this, and if Apple were too cheap they wouldn’t have developed this quite complex system at all, since cloud scanning is much simpler.

Besides the occasional safari tab freezing, I’ve not had any significant bugs on iOS 15.0.1. I’m pretty happy with it overall.

iOS 15 has been safe dating back to the betas, but if there's a specific oddity to your workflow you're worried about you should ask about it.
You must be new to iOS betas. Do not use them for important devices.

This CSAM will wreak havoc for those that have ever gotten a person to undress on FaceTime and recorded them without their knowledge and have kept the video in their library. 🤦🏻
Sounds like you’re confusing CSAM with image/object recognition, which has been around for years now. How do you know they’re not secretly keeping track of how many nudes you have already?

CSAM works by looking for photos that match the hash of known images in a database. Screen captures from a FaceTime video, or pictures of your child’s first bath are not going to be in the database.

iOS 15 has been very stable for me, I’ve not noticed any bugs that I haven’t seen in earlier versions of iOS, like the occasional screen rotation issue or Safari video playback locking up.

A big problem that is still present (and was also in iOS 14) is AirPods auto-switching being utterly broken. Sometimes it will work perfectly but often it will fail to switch when I start playing something on another device. Also very common is if I take a bud out, it will then connect to the other device I’m not using and not listening to music on, instead of resuming the music on the device I was using. 🙄

I OTAed to 14.8 this morning on a iPad Pro that was on 14.7.1. Not impressed with 15 home screen on iPadOS. Such a downgrade. I'm glad they at least will let you go to 14.8 even tho its not signed for restores.

We should be able to restore to iPhone OS 1 even on iPhone 13…14…and update to iOS 15 on iPhone 1 generation or iPhone 13…iPhone 14… whenever we want. Come on Apple. We love you but, software related 😞

Is it safe to upgrade to 15 yet or should I keep waiting?
There never was a reason to wait as far as I'm concerned.

Many people been running it from day one. I'm one of them, as well as a bunch of my clients, several family members, and lots of friends. There are minor bugs (as there always are with any release), but nothing severe or extraordinary. The benefits far outweigh the drawbacks, IMHO.

It's a mistake to fall for the hype sold to you by clickbait trash hit pieces written by people who benefit financially from casting everything Apple in as negative a light as possible, in order to get more clicks and sell more ads. They do this because they know Apple news gets clicks — and negative Apple news gets the most clicks. They literally make more money by exaggerating relatively small problems that affect relatively few people in order to fool gullible people into thinking they are huge problems that affect most people when that's more often than not untrue.
