After tried macOS 26 on my mbpro + looked someone's else ip16pro with ios26, I panicked and quickly turned off auto upgrade on all family iPad, iPhone, and warned friends to avoid updating. Also cleaned off the macOS 26 infection from my mbpro.

Anyway it is ridicolous that it is no more possible to downgrade to iOS 18 from this buggy iOS 26.

That is one hell of an overreaction. So you were concerned how it worked on your intel mac and drew some conclusions on someone elses phone?

Works on my machines though...

Before I updated my iPhone to iOS26 I backed it up, encrypted, etc., to my Mac. So, that was just data then, and I can't revert the OS with that?

Apple should really keep the downgrade window open much longer. While it's good they no longer force an upgrade, they aren't giving people much time to try the new iOS and decide if they want to keep it or not. My neighbour didn't even know about the new version until yesterday, he can't downgrade now if he doesn't like it.

While the days of iOS updates totally ruining a device's performance now thankfully seem to be long gone, Apple really should give people more freedom to choose which version of the OS they run on their device.

WTF I had the ipsw downloaded like 10 mins ago. Now the 13 mini is stuck on 26. Damnit!

Irritating they don't have a timeline or clarity on exactly when they will stop signing. Had I did the restore 2 hrs ago, it would have worked. Nice.
How's it performing? The animations were sometimes a bit slow/erratic on 18.6 for me.

I like Liquid Glass but it’s definitely a work in progress.

I was umming and aaahing about going back to iOS 18 to wait for apple to finish it.

Guess I won’t now.

Folks, Apple did the exact same thing last year: https://9to5mac.com/2024/09/23/apple-downgrade-ios-18/

Exactly a week from launch, downgrading from iOS 18 to iOS 17 wasn’t possible anymore.

As some of you may know, I have always called this policy malicious. Apple’s policy of preventing downgrades like this while severely impacting performance and, especially nowadays, severely affecting battery life is malicious.

That said, we all knew this was coming. Apple used to give it at least a month. Not anymore. But users should know both things at this point:

-Major iOS updates for non-current devices are malicious
-You have a week to go back

Good luck.

I will always try, to the best of my ability, not to run malware on my iOS devices:

Actually it’s fairly well established that the majority of apps and mobile websites will support 18.7 for 2-3 years. That’s how long we can live in the past.
I think it's quite funny that people come here for the very latest news about Apple everything and then cry a lot when they actually get what they've been hearing about in minute detail! Perhaps a new website needs to be started called StillOniOS9.com or even iRefuse.com

This happens every year with almost everything. A lot of people just don't like change. There's a real benefit when something doesn't work - you get to play more with your device and probably learn a lot in the process!

I asked Apple in January 2021 to resolve a Mail app issue I started having on my MacBook after an OS update. Despite numerous promises, no fix. So it doesn't surprise me that Apple is this unresponsive to its customer base. The message it is sending: Be wary of, and hold off on as long as you can, future updates.

OS 10.12.6 still works great

With such a major change and plenty of things needing ironing out they should be extending the signing period for iOS 18. Always been the thing I hate the most about Apple, forcing people onto only the latest version of the OS or apps when they update.

Anyone care to speculate how many years we will have to put up with this glass nonsense?!?
One or two. Look at the Photos.app. They’ve get rid of the new version in next OS. I assume that they tone it down in the 27 or we gonna love 26 and it will stay or they get younger customers and they will not need us anymore.

With all the recent changes Apple has been forced to make (third-party app stores, payments outside the App Store), I’m surprised this hasn’t come up yet.

The EU forced Apple to make a bunch of garbage changes. The one change that matters? “Nah, it’s okay, keep destroying iOS devices with irreversible malware, it’s fine”.

They had to do one thing.

And it's not like the average user even knows how to downgrade.

I've never understood this obsession to prevent downgrades, especially if a new version has flaws, sometimes very serious ones that aren't fixed right away.
they want to lock in people to the latest OS.

Easier for them to support, debug, do not have to maintain old OS, force you to buy new hardware because new OS "doesnt support" older hardware

I need a bit of help. I have an iPhone on iOS 18.1 (not my basic device, but it’s been my main device in the past and it’s had many sensitive information).

For a deep erase, I’ve always put the device into DFU mode and restored using a valid IPSW on my Mac. However, now I don’t have other IPSW than the iOS 26 one. And I don’t want to install iOS 26 on that phone.

The only option I see of staying on iOS 18 is updating via OTA to 18.7, however, I what to ensure all my data is removed, and I don’t trust the option of “erase all content” in settings, I feel like there will still be content of mine here…

What would you do to completely wipe this iPhone while staying in iOS 18?

Erase all content and settings.

Not only is it the only option you have, it is also very safe.
