"Proper downgrade rights" = Apple continues to accommodate people who refuse to upgrade but still insist on tying up support resources because they want to complain about something like redesigned buttons. Also, these very same people then complain when they aren't given all kinds of security updates and immediately run to the first lawyer they see crying about a class action lawsuit because the world moves along without them.

The road to android is right over there.

Refuse to allow users to tie up support resources if they are not on latest version then :)

While we're at it, give us a way to have root access without having to rely on exploiting vulnerabilities too, and deny support if we are utilizing that too. Can always restore beforehand if you need to go to the apple store because of hardware warranty issues.

Been there and done that with Android, jailbroken iOS is the best IMO!

I am still using 9.3.1 I refuse to upgrade anymore. there is nothing wrong with the OS so I am keeping it at 9.3.1 and will not be upgrading to the new OS this fall
I keep my iPad mini at iOS 9.3.3 beta 1. ;)
Don't know how long it can be kept but it must be interesting.

Still confused on what was changed from 9.3.2 to 9.3.4 for those of us who do not jailbreak...
your phone is more secure, a website could use the same jb technique to gain some access to your phone I guess.

Certainly various security fixes. I believe there was some more with 9.3.3 as far as some bug fixes and the like in addition to security fixes.

The number one reason that Apple gives away its OSes for free is so that they then can jamb it down our throats whether we want it or not.

That's the only reason.

The worst part about this is that there's no convenient way to stop these dam updates from automatically downloading on to the phone when on wifi. Sure we can try to remember to disconnect wifi every single time we're plugged in and locked, but inevitably we forget some times.. and then blammo- its download.

Then come the constant nag screens to install it that pop up randomly throughout the day. Sure, we can choose "later", but I've almost hit "install now" mistakenly a few times. Holy crap!

Sure we can delete the update to buy us a little time before it auto-downloads again... But inevitably it always ends up back on the phone no matter how diligent we are at disconnecting wifi when plugged in.

Sure we could reconfigure the router to ignore Apple servers.... But who wants to muck around with that?

This auto-download of iOS updates, with no easy way to stop it, along with incessant pop up nag screens to install it ...really degrades the iOS experience.

Sure security fixes are good. But pushed iOS updates that slow down the phone so much that it becomes unbearable to use.....SUCK
That's where the 16gb version comes in handy. Fill it up so it can't auto download. Lol

Isn't it interesting how Apple can get away with nonsense that Microsoft gets absolutely slammed for. Forced updates in Windows 10 have been heavily criticised, but somehow when Apple does the same thing on iOS it is okay?

1. The reason they ask that is so that they don't waste their time trying to address complaints about versions of the OS which are not going to be supported.
Duh! You seem to have missed my point. Apple does *not* accommodate people who refuse to update, as you have claimed.
They're usually the tech savvy ones who can a) help themselves or b) are part of an online support community with or without jailbreak.

2. Let's not pretend like if you have Apple devices you were somehow hoodwinked into an experience that you didn't know about. Apple is not going to follow the MS model where you have people on WinXP for over a decade. That's not their target market, and buying into Apple's ecosystem and then complaining about how it operated as if it's a surprise is nothing more than willful ignorance or, at best, being extremely disingenuous. The phones have been coming out and things have operated this way for ten years.

You mixing up 2 models here. Yes, Apple has very well got a number of users on OS X Snow Leopard among others, the Win XP equiv. Thought you're favourite finger-du-jour was Android :)
Indeed, Android is for the tinkerers and modders.

But to your point, the Apple user community is vast & diverse. There are still switchers/newbies both from Android & Windows that might feel hoodwinked by not being able to downgrade to an older version or feel the need to not have updates force-fed (ie. pre-download of new iOS version to your device without your permission taking up valuable space).

Look, I'm a 30 year supporter of Apple and its eco system, but restrictions are increasing for the sake of Apple not the consumer. I'm defending user choice, you're defending a form of corporate absolutism!

Nothing wrong except for multiple known security vulnerabilities that have been patched in newer versions.

Can someone take this to court -- the issue of allowing users to downgrade. Some iOS versions simply do not play nice with some devices, so users should have the ability to go back to a version that works instead of impairing the device. Simple request.

The method (using a tvOS or watchOS update profile) mentioned at https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...-do-i-shut-it-up.1973615/page-4#post-23259894 could be of some help as well when it comes to avoiding updates.

(Realistically speaking, aside from having a fairly straightforward option in settings related to automatic download of OS updates, at the very least deleting an automatically downloaded update should set things up so that the same update is not downloaded automatically again, and I believe that's how it worked when the ability to delete a downloaded update was finally introduced in iOS 7.1, but at some point it stopped doing that it seems.)

This whole OS signing is a load of crap. Just let people install whatever OS and whatever version of app store apps they want. Nobody is stopping me from downgrading to System 7.5 on my Performa and downgrading to Microsoft office 98...so why should the phone be any different? Its just one more control for forced obsolescence. Once you upgrade your iPhone to the latest OS and you decide that it is a big mistake (as it is way too slow now)...boom..tooooooo late! Proof that you really don't control anything you purchase from Apple.

And the Apple fanboy kingdom is going to come up with some reason why its good that Apple makes all your decisions for you....so brace for it.
Obvious trolling, but i'll byte:
1: You have no clue what you're talking about. What you feel right after reading that is a byproduct of this.
2: Calling someone a "fanboy" because they're disagreeing with you is called an ad hominem, or simply bullying.

LOL! Okay buddy. So if I am trolling what are you doing?

How so ? The first question I always hear from a support person when anyone comes in with a problem is, "Have you updated to the newest version?"

Apple bigot! Just because some people have legitimate complaints about how Apple force-manages their devices, doesn't give you the right to tell them to dump it and break the eco system they've invested in.
ALL platforms have issues, if no one's ever allowed to criticize a manufacturers design choices, we'd never see improvements or consumers would receive even less for higher prices.

There's a perfectly good reason for wanting people on the latest version. Bug fixes. EVERY software company does this. Many will not provide support if the customer is not and for very good reason. If you dislike that now, I imagine you're going to have a really difficult future.

One of the problems is with developers (like Apple). In the 80s and 90s you had to make sure the software you shipped was near perfect, or you'd be shipping out bug fixes on floppies. Todays approach is ship now, fix later. Software has just become sloppy over the years. Who cares about fixing bugs before a release when you can make the user update 42 times in a year?

You really don't seem to understand the concepts here. Software back in the 80/90's time frame was no where near as complex as it is today, the two are just not comparable. Today's approach is get it as good as you can because there will never be a total elimination of bugs.

Your expectations are completely out of touch with reality, sorry you feel this way but until you start to understand, again, the reality of the situation you are in for a serious set of disappointments.

lol. Okay. Sure. Read a few release notes for iOS apps and tell me that these are complex issues that couldn't have been found with better testing and more skilled programmers.

They're not the same. Forced updates in W10 are downloaded and installed.

but you can downgrade to windows 8, 7, xp, switch to linux, make it a hackintosh, run your own homemade os... it's not locked down

many people that dont like signing dont like it because they want jailbreakable firmware. windows can give root access without hacks, so windows doesnt even have that problem.

Or just go android. Problem solved. That is until you deal with android issues.
