Usually I sidle up and try to help clarify things.

I've done the same thing several times. Mostly with harder questions where the store rep. just looks totally dumbfounded. But every once in while I'll overhear them say something like "Photoshop wont run good on the $1199 Macbook because of the graphics card, you want the $1499 Macbook." Even tho they have exactly the same GPU. lol.

Display 9.7-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit glossy widescreen Multi-Touch display with IPS technology
1024-by-768-pixel resolution at 132 pixels per inch (ppi)
Fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating
Support for display of multiple languages and characters simultaneously

that was taken right from Apple.com

No difference in screens.

The LCD is laminated to the glass which makes it look like you are touching the actual LCD and not a layer of glass on top of the LCD. It also reduces a source of reflections and visual noise. Its also possible that the quality of the display has been increased in the same way that HDTV screens get better in regards to refresh, contrast, brightness and blacks.

Its a better screen.

It's better because it's new. My sisters 5 months old iPad definitely looks a lot better than my 9 month old iPad

;)

good post, but are you 100% sure of these?

Any solid confirmation of this? I know alot of people (including me) are trying to find out. I do remember that supposed "leaked iPad 2" screen that was found that was thinner in construction. They had stated at the time it looked higher quality even considering it was just a part, and not hooked up. I truely hope this is the case. The iPhone 4's laminated screen is an improvement (not including that it is retina).

There's no confirmation, but it does not make sense for Apple to use different construction techniques on what are ostensibly two different sizes of the same device; iPhone, iPad and iTouch. iFixit confirmed that the iTouch 4G uses the same screen construction technique, but not the same screen, as the iPhone 4 so it doesn't make sense that the iPad doesn't.

I agree with you surmisation, but didn't know if you had any hard data. My only concern is that it was not mentioned during the keynote, although I'm hoping it was just something they felt wasn't important to mention. We'll see next week I guess

Just to clarify, the iPad 2 does not have the same screen as the original iPad.

They simply share the same resolution. The new screen is thinner and they differentiate in specifications.

I agree. We don't KNOW this for certain, but it's the likely answer. A laminated screen would help make the device thinner, for one thing.

Though I just put my iPhone 4 next to my iPad 1 and don't see a major difference in screen reflection. So I don't think the lamination helps reduce reflections all that much, unfortunately.

No joke. When Apple first started opening its stores, I found that most of the employees were genuine Apple geeks who were very knowledgeable about all the products. Even the non-Genius Bar employees.

Over the years, however, as Apple has opened up stores in seemingly ever mall in America, the quality of the employees has gone down considerably. I've lost count of the number of times I've overheard an employee giving inaccurate information to a potential customer. Usually I sidle up and try to help clarify things.

Amen to that, I worked for the Schaumbug store when it opened, it was the 4th store to open so it was very early on and the line was huge (2000+ people) and almost everyone working in that store was as knowledgeable as a genius. Now they are staffed by a bunch of people that think apple is cool (don't get me wrong apple is) and think owning an ipod makes them knowledgable. There are some that know there stuff, but a lot of them are just there for the work and discounts :p

I just want less fingerprints. I always wash my hands and it still accumulates fingerprints. WAY more than the iPhone 4 yet supposedly has the same coatings? I dunno....

What about all the talk about the visibility and less glare for reading outdoors? Any news on that?

Solutions? Maybe the only thing is a screen protector of some sort?

Yeah I see this happen ALL THE TIME. It's pretty annoying when I hear it because like if you don't know anything about the product you are selling then why are you even working there...

The white bezel will hide fingerprints better.

iLounge's hands-on should answer questions about the screen:

iPad 2’s screen looked a little bit closer to the glass than the prior one, maybe a little brighter. It seemed to be every bit as reflective as the first one, and the lights in the demonstration room were bouncing off of it in every direction. We’ll need additional time to see how it performs under different sorts of lighting conditions, and at different angles.

In a nutshell: the screen is only slightly improved at best.

Any improvement is better than no improvement!

Being closer to the glass will definitely give it a better viewing angle which is pretty important for sharing the iPad.

No joke, retail hates you. ;) I know it's off-topic, but having worked in retail and reading this comment made me remember all the "helpful customers" who knew oh so much more about the product. A real pain in the *ahem* for everyone involved.

Sorry, couldn't let it go.

Thanks for the find! Anyone else feel like the fingerprint resistance on the iPad is not like that of the iPhone?

Mike

Even if the screen were better for some ancillary reason, unless the Apple Store employee actually had been at the Apple event this wednesday, he never actually saw it in person. So, what would he have based this on? Nothing that MR or Engadget couldn't tell you. And as far as we know, the screen resolution is the same.

Again, yes, it may end up being true that the iPad 2 screen might look better due to ancillary factors, but the conclusion is that the Apple store employee really has no basis upon which to make that claim.
