BackMarket targeted Apple Store display iPhones with this campaign. They weren't spamming anyone.

Calm down everyone.

Even better,..they managed to dupe MacRumors into advertising them for FREE! ?‍♂️
Was this MR getting duped or simply MR scratching Apple's back by telling readers how cool and creative this spam campaign was so MR stays in Apple's good graces?

Back in the early 00’s I was at a LAN party. There were about 500 people at it. I was using windows and did a “net send” broadcast message to everyone as a joke which caused everyone’s games to drop out to the desktop to display the (rude) message.

I learned very quickly how much damage you can do to your reputation by spamming people unwantedly that day ?

That’s all this is. SPAM.

I don’t understand why some of them are laughing when reading the air dropped messages… I don’t see anything funny about the messages or the situation in this video. I’m guessing the entire video is staged and everyone reacting in the video are plants?
All the people in the video are paid. Note that real customers are blured.

BackMarket are great, as here in Europe we can also sell our used Apple gear to them and they pay very well, compared to Apple.

For example, I can sell my iPhone to BackMarket for 366€ vs Apple’s 285€.

That video was completely staged.
It would more likely make me want to spend the money and get an iPhone from the Apple Store at least I can trust them!

It is incredible! I guess most just read the headline and then immediately start commenting since the discussion keeps going about them spamming everyone, yet, that was not the case.

No, I read the article. It doesn't matter to me that it was only done to the display iPhones at the Apple Store and not directly to the consumer's iPhone. What matters to me is how invasive and spammy this is and there should be zero tolerance for such an act. I honestly hope Apple can sue them for it. Then I'll laugh.

And shame on MacRumors for giving them such free publicity.

They are sending messages to the device a person is currently using for the purposes of advertising without their permission. Whether the person actually owns the device or not is irrelevant, it's still spam.

It would more likely cause me to put the phone down and walk straight out of the store. The 9to5Mac article makes it clear that Apple teamed up with Back Market to do this. The fact that Apple didn't do sleazy BS like this is one of the reasons I've used their products for decades now. The more they go down this road the more they will push me away as a customer.

I call this a very cool stunt. I read in the article they targeted the display devices in the store, not the customer's phones, right?
Do you think it would go over well if they started leaving flyers for their store on the display tables in Apple Stores?

This is the digital equivalent of that. It is a stunt. It is not cool.

Who doesn’t have airdrop blocking unknown contacts? Thought that was enabled by default?

"BackMarket are great"
No, after a stunt like that, they are not great
