I think price will be a major factor in the fold adoption, and the rumors suggest it will be far outside the reach of what I'm willing to pay for a phone. (And being Apple, I'm sure those rumor have merit.) I'm sure it would be cool, but like the Vision Pro, I don't see the mass appeal. But I say this as someone who's considering downgrading to the base iphone 17 because of price and smaller form factor, so I'm not really the target the way I once was.

1. The few people I know that have a Galaxy Fold or whatever, they have the standard external screen AND the ability to open it up and have more functionality. It actually doesn't work great for consumption because it is square and not 16:9 so movies / tv / youtube don't work great, though I think you do get a slight size bump. I think it does work great for email, web, and use cases of split screen with one on each half.

2. To your Magic keyboard - external Monitor for an iPhone, I just don't know how well that would work. I guess the iPhone has the tech capabilities to drive the monitor over a connection. The new M class iPads push content to a connected screen using Stage Manager. I think even extended, not just mirrored.
Yep, that's my thinking. There's no issue with the chipset not being able to cope with this - it can easily. You'd need the usb-c port to be upgraded to thunderbolt on all iPhones, and then it's simply a matter of allowing functionality that already is fully developed in IPadOS to be implemented in iOS ( given how iOPS and iPAdOS are essentially forks, I don't see a huge technical problem.

Some companies already make such a "dock" product, but at this point they're a bit sketchy. It needs refining. But a current iPhone easily has the chops to be the guts of a laptop.

Interesting concept, and likely where things are headed one day.

But that would still require me to pull out a laptop like device or have a station to connect to.

The fold allows me to double my screen real estate by pulling it out of my pocket.

Yep. But, for me, I can't handle onscreen keyboards for anything other than very short messages.

Aww man I am trying to buy 16 Pro Max 1tb
You're going to want to go to your carrier's website for that; after the event, you almost certainly won't find any 16PM models on Apple's own website. They routinely discontinue any of their previous models which are viable competition for their latest products, and only keep around those previous models which fill a void in the new lineup.

(Caveat that... you might still find them in the refurbished section of the site.)

Apple's online storefront has gone down ahead of the "Awe dropping" Apple event taking place later today, where several new products are expected to be announced.

Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, and iPhone 17 Pro models, as well as Apple Watch SE 3, Apple Watch Series 11, Apple Watch Ultra 3, and AirPods Pro 3. The company should also announce the release dates of its next major software updates including iOS 26 and macOS Tahoe.

MacRumors will have in-depth coverage of today's Apple event, which kicks off at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time, including a live blog on our website and posts via @MacRumorsLive on X. For a full rundown of everything we expect to see, be sure to check out our guide.

Or check the Apple Refurb store (for your country) online - I'm pretty sure a lot of what turns up there isn't refurbished, it's completely new devices but with less common (and often larger) storage capacity. Apple don't do offers on their main site, but they use their refurb stores to offload stock.

Does it add a significant amount of weight and thickness to the iPad?
Some. But nothing significant. I'm not standing using it. On a flight. At a desk or table. On the couch. None of these use cases are problematic for the extra weight or thickness and I get a physical keyboard and trackpad. Plus a stand.

Yep - The Logitech keyboard case, although not as "fancy-looking" as the iPad Magic keyboard, does actually have a bumper around the edges of the iPad, and the keyboard can be removed if you don't want it, so it seems a more flexible and practical option.
