To the OP:

Something to think about:

'Do you swear to tell the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you GOD'

I think your mother should pay half the cost of the refurb replacement for encouraging you to lie and you should pay the remainder half. Who knows something good may happen in your life then.

Tell em you are not there for the shattered glass but have a software issue where the phone turns off by itself and apps keep crashing. Works every time:) I'm prolly on my 4th iPhone 5 every time it gets scratched or nicked and it bothers me I swap it out

Do you do that "trick" with every other possession you have? TV, laptop, car? Just get it swapped when it has a wee nick? Blatantly lie just to get what you want?

what a generation we live in.

Sad isn't it? Every now and then I get the urge to stop coming here because of comments like these. Actually it's more the attitude than the comments. My wife and I had dinner at Houlihan's last night and the waitress forgot to add the soft drinks. We told her and guess what? She said "Thank you so much" and then didn't charge us anyway. It pays to be honest 100% even when it's uncomfortable.

Refreshing to see some genuine people left out there.

So you're the kind of people who've driven the price of replacements up...

I decided to tell the truth anyways, and it ended up costing $300 (but they let me get AppleCare + too)

They were very nice there, and I have a good consince now,

(I still believe they wouldn't of cared if we lied, same result, maybe without the warranty)

Forgive me, but my curiosity is killing me. You have referred to "we" several times. You are ostensibly talking about yourself, but you keep using "we".

Who is "we"??

BTW: Good on you for not lying. Whether anyone else would care...you would care, so you didn't lie.

Oh! I don't mean to, it just naturally happens #

It gets worse. I'm not the next generation I'm a grown ass man
Haha. By "grown ass man" you mean you listen to hip hop, hoping to be cool. Heard that saying. So saying it now means you're living in the past and haven't come to terms with responsibility yet. Crazy how you can get so much from a dumb ass saying isn't it. Actually grow up and take responsibility for your actions. That's what being a grown up is about.

OP, just tell the truth. Be patient and Expect to pay. You might be surprised by the generosity of others and have a clear conscience to boot.

Regardless if you tell the truth or lie, unless you have Applecare+, you're going to have to pay.

Edit: Nevermind, should have read OP's last post.

If you've read much about Apple you already know they've created a massive revenue stream for themselves. Even with billions in off shore tax havens, Apple continues to make fat profit per item.

That's why they have a liberal policy when one goes to a store to ask for help. If they give away a laptop or iPad, or iPhone away they don't lose anything. We've already paid them enough to cover it. Giveaways cost the consumer not Apple.

It makes Apple look good & the customer happy to get it for free.

So should you lie? No!

If Apple outsmarts us for big fat profits, that's good for them. No one makes us buy from them.

I am glad other people are honest and tell a waitress if she makes a mistake in our favor.

Our mothers told us to be honest and do the right thing. It's sad now to see mothers going the other way around.

Kind of moot in the original question since accidental damage isn't covered anyway.

Just tell them that your Grandma dropped it from 3 feet, then sat on it. All bases covered.

Good grief. Now I can't get the sight of granny sitting on the phone out of my head....

I just need some quick help. I dropped my iPhone off a table onto a tile floor, about 3 feet high and my iPhone shattered.

I am thinking I should just tell them the truth, but my mother says we should say that my great grandmother sat on it and she did not know it was there.

What do you think?

Having previously worked for a certain "Purveyor of Fine Fruits", I can tell you that the Genius will not believe your story, nor will your lying result in a free swap-out.

They'll respect you a hell of a lot more if you just tell the truth. Lying won't (and shouldn't) get you anywhere.

This thread is just another reminder that the majority of people probably lack common decency, even when it's counterproductive to their own ends. Thank god that theres a system of elitism in most western countries that generally assures meritocracy.

Your mother is willing to not only lie but to throw her own mother under the bus?

Class act, your mother.
