The 22" is too small for me, but the 27" seems almost too big. Although the 24" is a great size I do prefer the widescreen look 16:10 and thunderbolt and stuff

Go for the 27" iMac. It has a better display than the 21.5" iMac NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO! I use 27" Cinema Displays both at home and in the office. I love those displays whenever I surf the web, watch movies, write papers or books, write computer codes for numerical computations, etc.

I once recommended the 27" iMac to an elderly who planned to get a 21.5" iMac. After he used it for a while, he thanked me for the recommendation because he loved the display so much!

However, if the 27" iMac will put a financial burden on one, then I do not recommend the 27" iMac.

I have the 27" I chose it purely because I need the real-estate on my main machine...I find it a little surprising that an Apple representative would actually talk anyone out of a sale...They are, however honest so the guy was simply trying to match the OP's needs with the best machine for the job.

I discuss all my requirements with a personal Apple rep. As upgrade time gets closer, I start to pay attention to what's new and what I might buy.

Somebody offered me pretty much all my cash back on this one yesterday, but with no new iMacs yet, and no new Pro's either...I'm sticking...This machine eats all I throw at it...And that's a lot.

OP: Only you know what you need your Mac for, and what you are going to ultimately be doing with it...FWIW, users often find they need more than they originally thought.

So 9 months ago it was decided we would by an imac for the house when I got my bonus in March. Here we are in March and after 9 months of research i finally decided on the 27inch imac. (I even put it in my signature already!)

Fast forward to today and at the Apple Store said I wanted to purchase said imac and the rep asked me what i would be using it for and why i wanted the 27 inch. My response was the 21.5 looked small to me (use a 21" monitor everyday for work, see friends 21.5 imacs at their houses) - and we have a large space where we are putting it so why not. Also plan to have it awhile and don't want to look back and regret decision even if i don't have immeadiate use.

He basically told me I was stupid to spend the extra money on the screen since I wasn't doing any heavy video editing or gaming, and I should just get one of the 21.5 models and basically told me the lesser one would be plenty for all our music, movies, picturs, documents, etc...

So i left with a 21.5 to test out and see how I like it, returning it if not. However I am curious if i should agree with his suggestion or not? Is the 27in only beneficial to those who really need the screen specs? Do any recreational users have a 27 inch they regret? I'm so confused. My logic for wanting a 27in might be stupid, but i don't love the 21.5...it looks so small on my huge workspace!!!

Please share thoughts - and waiting for 2012 imac not an option, so don't waste your time
Why would you let a rep talk you out of anything? You know what you want. Don't listen to anyone else. That was your mistake.

Oh and I would wait for the refresh :)

Why go less if you can afford more? I have a 27, love it and once in a while I do some video and photo editing but nothing too professional. I just love having open multiple screens and watching online video on the screen. And just looking at your pictures on that screen. Loving it. Go 27, unless you're a gamer.

I was in our local Apple Store a couple of weeks ago and a sales guy basically told me the same thing...we tell people not to get the 27" since it will look a lot bigger when you get it home.

Strange, but I think we can all make our own determination as to what screen size we want.

Just respond with something like...my brother has a thunderbolt display at home so I am well aware of how big the 27" iMac is...

I've got basically a response to everything they try to say:

Applecare? Nah, I'm going to be voiding the warranty with some mods

smaller laptop? Nah, I like big screens...

32GB iPhone is plenty. Nah, my ego commands 64GB!

27" in my book, but it's based on my preference.

I like to have 2 things open at once, sometimes. media or Browsing and productivity. I prefer not to cycle tabs if i can get things on the same screen, as big as it is. I also like to have little gadgets on the side.

In my office at home, i have a small space so a 27" would make for a decent TV as well. I have a 24" lcd tv where i watch random DirecTV programs but a lot of what i want to watch on demand are on websites. It'd be nice to have the real estate to browse and watch shows on the same screen vs me turning my chair around.

But like i said, it's all preference. Do what fits your needs. It's something you may keep for half a decade. Your needs in the future may change (i.e. new job, going to school for advanced degree, etc).

good luck! :)

I feel like you aren't being 'wowed' enough by the 21" iMac. Which is understandable. As an object, the 27" is much more beautiful than the 21"

But, I think if you need to multi-task, get an external monitor or make use of fullscreen mode and spaces. I can't see why 27" is good if you're web browsing or using basic productivity software. My housemate has a 27" and reading text on that big of a display is just painful. And having multiple windows open on the same desktop is just messy and distracting.

You can never be too thin or too rich. And you can never have too much screen real estate. Go 27.

i mainly surf the web and i went with the 27 inch over the 21 inch. I have no regrets at all.

Strangely, I'm assuming the profit margin is greater on the 21 inch vs the 27 inch possibly production cost on the larger screen is significantly more than 21 inch

I thought my 27 would be too big when I bought it, but I ended up loving it. The extra space is great, you can have several documents and windows open side by side. I typically have about 2-3 windows per space.

Also, the better GPU in the 27 is a big bonus.

No Apple Store employee is on commission. They are there to help you get the machine that fits you best, not the one that costs the most.

Very noble.
Then why don't they understand things like pixel density vs. available GPU horsepower? The 21" has a lesser graphics card than the 27" but has way less pixels to push. In the end they perform the same for their respective resolutions. The 21" may even have the edge at native res. Telling a customer that the 27" is better for games is truly stupid.
The 27" is better if you need an i7 or if you need the extra screen real estate. Now the i7 IS better for multi-media content creation. It's like users who think Mac's are good "at graphics". They are just repeating what they have heard.

Go 27in

This is a no brainer,

If you can accommodate a 27in screen, go 27in, if not, go 21.5in or purchase a Mac Mini with a Dell 24in Monitor.

Me, I can never go back to 21.5in iMac, hell, even my 5 year old prefers the 27in.

You will eventually encounter some Apple Store Employees who are a bunch of DumbA****, where think they know everything!!! if you really want a 27 inch iMac, go for it! don't let an Apple Employee stop you from purchasing it... if it were me, I would exchange the 21" for a 27" right away and tell that Employee to ******* Off!!!!! The 27" is really nice looking, I'm on it more often then watching stuff on my HDTV!

I would strongly recommend that you get that 27" inch!

I don't want to be THAT guy, but I have used both 27 and 21.5" iMacs before I purchased mine. I went with the 21.5" because I dislike the huge 27" screen size. I hated my art classes in college because we were always on these huge displays where i had to scroll for "days" to get to the other side. I dislike having to turn my head to see the other side of the screen.

These are my thoughts, but I'm clearly in a minority on preferring the 20-ish" size monitor.

I agree with you.

The thing I hate is having to lift my mouse, reset my hand position and then continue mousing. I'd rather be able to scroll the entire display with a single wrist movement; unfortunately for my tastes the 27" is just way too big while the 21.5" seems just right.

The 27 also makes the chin look smaller and not so dominate part of the screen.

Can't you increase the mouse sensitivity to compensate for the larger screen?

if you watch movies on your computer, 27 incher is much nicer of course.

if not, i agree with the apple dude, if you don't do video editing nor gaming 27 inch is kind of pointless. its like getting a 50 inch screen tv with no hd box. you won't use the full resolution.

i myself am getting a 27 inch screen but i play video games... i'm currently waiting for the imac to be upgraded.

I have some land up here in canada i will sell you...it's full of diamonds, oil, and gold ill let you have it for only $100,000!

I'm going to be selling my rocket rides to the moon in the next few months,i can count you in right? Ill give you great deal,1 million up front and ill pencil you in for first trip!

;) go back and get the 27"...show some balls!

If I missed anything, let me know. But it sounds like you want a computer that will handle your media viewing needs, and maybe basic computer tasks - but it won't become outdated very soon. However, you really want some good screen real-estate, while keeping it in a compact form-factor.

Unless you just love the way an imac looks, I'd say go for an i5 or i7 mac mini. Then buy a 26"-32" monitor. (There are monitors for decent prices that greatly exceed the quality of the new imac's displays.) Ultimately, you'd save money, and meet all of your needs. Plus, the mac mini has HDMI out; so there's no problem there.

I use a 27" imac for video editing quite often, and it is a great product. No doubt about that. But, if you won't be doing many intensive tasks, I'd say go mac mini and a separate display. Maybe that's not what you're into; but it would be cheaper, and potentially much more pleasing (viewing-wise).

Go get the low end 27 inch

you save bit of cash but still get that gorgeous screen! It sounds like your workspace deceivers a big fat iMac filling up the empty space.

change the tracking speed of your mouse.

get the 27"
the comments he made regarding gaming/video or stupid.
Perhaps you just prefer larger web windows or whatever.
Do not listen to him

Buy what you want, not what someone tells you.

So obviously this page is. Loaded with opinions, as "which is better" is always a matter of opinion. That said, I think the 27" is a good choice if it isn't straining your budget and you have room on your desk. My reasoning for saying this is that in a bedroom, a 27" screen can be enough for movies, and my iMac serves that purpose beautifully. Although the giant working space allows me to ignore features like full-screen viewing and spaces. I think it increases productivity when I'm multitasking, and it makes editing photos pure joy. But in the end, it's almost entirely subjective. My dad uses an 11" MacBook Air for almost all of his computing. To each his own. Good luck.
