Earth Day has nothing to do with global warming. It has to do with treating the planet right. I don't care whether her you believe in climate change or not, but I think we can all agree that pollution isn't good, we'll run out of oil eventually, and we're running out of clean water and food to feed everyone.

But side note, the planet has had 373 consecutive months of above average temperatures, and the 16 warmest years on record came in the last 18 years, with 2015 and 2014 being the warmest and second warmest.

The poster did not say anything about global warming. And the poster is right about the global cooling awareness on earth day. When I was a child in school, a whole day talked about the various issues involving saving the earth, and global cooling was one of the biggest consquences of doing nothing, well, according to the school.

A side note, denying climate change is silly, it has been happiness for a billion-plus years. But, human influence on global climate change is still debatable.

Whether it's debatable or not, you have to ask yourself if it's worth taking a risk and doing nothing before it's too late to reverse the trend.

Yeah, Apple is the paragon of bloody environmental conscientiousness ... by gluing batteries into its Macs and flooding the market with countless iDevices. Don't get me wrong. I love my Retina MacBook Pro (etc), but this is such a hypocritical/cynical move by Apple. The worst part is that they probably don't even realise it.

How many cotton plants were mercilessly murdered to make these shirts?

In all seriousness though, this seems like a huge waste of resources for nothing but a little PR.

Too late for what exactly? The planet has been warmed up a lot more in the past than what humans are doing to it currently. Human activity is also putting off the next ice age by several thousand years.

It's amazing to me that people are wringing their hands about a 1 meter increase in global sea levels over the course of 100+ years but don't seem willing to acknowledge that the planet, of its own accord, does much nastier things when humans aren't even involved. Apparently NYC under 1000 feet of glacier ice would be completely okay with global warming freak-out people.

Is it really that green to make and provide all your staff with green shirts just to wear on one day of the year?

If you think the market is "flooded with countless iDevices", you should look to yourself as the problem, not Apple. Apple only supply, it's us as buyers that demand, so if there are too many out there it's our own fault.

What is worse:
  • NOT using clean/green energy
  • Lie about using 100% green energy by paying off other companies and consumers to give Apple “green credits” for its coal electricity usage
That's some dirty marketing Apple does...

The problem with green energy is even if you buy it directly you are not necessarily getting green energy, your actual power could come from the coal plant down the street since the load dispatcher isn't looking at where you bought it but how to best manage the grid. What you are paying for is for a green producer to be able to produce and sell green power and offset power from other sources. Buying credits does the same thing since it creates a market for green power that might not exist absent salable credits.

However, "This store has offset its carbon footprint by buying green energy credits" isn't a sexy as what they put up so guess which marketeers will go with?

As I scientist myself I believe in methodology and experimental consistency. And that is eaxctly what scientific community has been doing regarding global warming research. There is no agenda, there is no convenience, this is not a religion where you choose to have faith or not. There is data, and statements are based on that.

The problem is that the data can be flawed as well as the conclusions. Oh, and anything based on consensus is a religion or faith. If you don't have faith in your own findings, you are not really much of a scientist.

Environmentally conscious, yet blissfully unaware of suicide nets.
Thinks clean energy is generated by unicorns and rainbows.

... and that's the kicker. On record for what, the last hundred or so years? The planet is a lot older than that. For man to think he is affecting the climate is not only arrogant but based on very limited observable conditions and theories.

There is no doubt that we are in a warming trend but to take the leap that man is causing it is just a dumb assumption to make.
Causing or contributing?

The problem is that the data can be flawed as well as the conclusions. Oh, and anything based on consensus is a religion or faith. If you don't have faith in your own findings, you are not really much of a scientist.

In the scientific world, consensus is built by conducting experiments and analyzing data and peer reviewed studies to assess the validity of the conclusions. Just because a scientist has made some findings doesn't mean they blindly have faith in them, they often conduct further studies to validate the results and share the data with others to see if they can replicate the results. Sure, they can have flawed data but that eventually comes out, such as the discredited study claiming a link between vaccines and autism. Unusual or earth shaking results are subject to scrutiny because scientists are skeptical by nature, as a result consensus in the scientific community is not based on religion or faith. Sure, there is always some scientist who says "You're all wrong," but except for vary rare cases they tend to be on the lunatic fringe or bought and paid for by some special interest who is impacted negatively by the prevailing scientific viewpoint.

The fact is that he may be right. They could be wearing the same clothes they've always used. All in all, it is good to see a company like Apple trying to raise environment awareness.

That being said, Apple could go further and build all of their computers with replaceable memory and socketed CPU and GPU. The machines would last longer.

Oh, and just one more thing: Everyone is aware of The Environment. Earth Day is a marketing tool.

You are an uninformed imbecile.

Earth day was to inform us all of man made global cooling. That's a fact. I was there.

Pure and simple. Then the EXACT SAME communists and socialists who warned us of man made 'global cooling' changed it to man made 'global warming. Now they have changed it to man made 'climate change.' They have been lying since the 1960's.

I have lived through each and every iteration of this BS.

I believe in 'climate change' - just not the way atotomotron droids like you do.

I believe the earth has had three ice ages. I also believe that the ice melted.

That's climate change, bruther!. Industrialization and your farts didn't warm the planet. The sun did.

"...the planet has had 373 consecutive months of above average temperatures, and the 16 warmest years on record came in the last 18 years, with 2015 and 2014 being the warmest and second warmest." -- This crap from government PAID 'scientists' who know that there is more ice at BOTH poles yet report it as 'diminishing.'

Remember the ship full of GW scientists on their way to Antarctica a few years ago? Their mission was to document the receding ice in the region due, of course to my pickup truck and your vegetarian bean farts. The ship got hopelessly stuck in the 'ice that should not have been there.' So it took several weeks for an ice breaker to get to these 'scientists.' That ice breaker got mired in the 'melting and receding ice.'

After about one month a second ice breaker was able to unstuck the decent folks on the first ice breaker and the ship of fools. These folks reported melting and receding ice. Why? They were there to report that fact. It was their JOB. They were paid to report one story which was contrary to what they experienced. They lied. Worse: YOU bought their lies. Even worse: our taxes paid for these lies.

As for the 'temperatures, it was MUCH, MUCH warmer 2,000 years ago than it is now. Look it up. Caesar had his wine grapes growing in Northern England. It has been impossible to grow wine grapes in Northern England for more than 1,000 years. Yet you believe it's warmer now than ever...I have news for you - the earth used to be a fiery ball and has been cooling ever since.

The question you and the other AGW drones should ask yourselves is: Why has no one ever informed me that we are still in a cooling period?

A: The socialist left is using YOU as a useless idiot to reduce our freedoms and raise taxes.

It is well documented that the temperatures are being manipulated by 'scientists' who are being paid to lie for the AGW agenda. They lose their jobs if they tell the truth.

Food is plentiful, the only fatal famines we have on this planet are political famines. They happen in Africa where socialist/communist governments refuse aid from western governments to cull the portion of the population who want only freedom.

It is sad that you are so uninformed. I expect you will live in shackles prior to your demise. And YOU will have supported and, in fact, VOTED for those shackles to be placed upon you.

I'll be looking down upon you and your ilk, thinking back to this forum posting and smiling.

Some folks, like you, actually belong in Hell - one that you - happily, mind you -brought upon yourselves.
This is hilarious and sad at the same time. I'm all for debate and discussion, but you like some paranoid conspiracy theorist. I'll just hit the ignore button though because you told me to go to hell.

Apple could celebrate earth day, by not releasing yearly disposable new electronic products that they make obsolete as fast as possible. I find all this green wash very annoying. I would have much more respect towards the company if they would celebrate their greed openly.

That being said, Apple could go further and build all of their computers with replaceable memory and socketed CPU and GPU. The machines would last longer.

You're assuming that next generation CPUs and GPUs would be compatible with older MBs, offer better performance with exiting MB design, and be available at a price that makes upgrading economically viable. It would be nice to be able to upgrade the memory, however.

Science is consensus. Nothing more. What is believed today will not necessarily be the same tomorrow.

Man-made global warming is nothing more than a bunch of people sitting around a table thinking they know everything about the earth and the universe. News flash, they don't and neither do you especially if you believe them.

It's consensus that we should stop at red lights. So I'm not going to stop at red lights anymore, starting today. Because surely, someday we'll see that we were wrong to stop.

It saddens me more than anything to see people who have been suckered into science which is at best a shot in the dark into what is really happening. The scientists are not 4.5 billion years old (the age of the earth) so everything that is coming out of their mouth is strictly theory. That's all I'm saying. If you believe them, that's fine but then you should also believe everything else they say. Otherwise your faith in our scientists is only a belief of convenience.
So you're saying you can't trust anything over 115 years old, which is about as old as the oldest person alive?

Can you cite a source for your "Fiery ball" theory, please?

I love it when random people think they know more about science than people who get paid professionally to be scientists.

I am a scientist and I can tell you that few things can be said to be "facts." When I publish a study I say that my hypothesis was "supported" or "not supported". I never say that something was proven because I can't prove anything. I can occasionally disprove something, but even that is hard because there might be other extraneous variables that I can't control.

The climate change scientists that are any good are claiming that current evidence shows that the climate is indeed getting warmer and it is likely that man is responsible for it. What the layman hears is "FACT: Global Warming is caused by man."

The reality is that we only have a very small window in which we have data and that data does support the conclusion that man is contributing to the changing temperatures. What many people rightly point out is that there have been plenty of long-established theories that eventually were proven completely false. It remains to be seen whether climate change will be one of those.

Most conservative complain about making policies that burden employers over something that cannot be conclusively proven without many thousands of years of observations.

Most liberals complain that it is better to be safe than sorry since at the moment it appears to be correct.

Let's not insult each other over this. And I think all of us should, regardless of politics be for more responsibility for not wasting resources or polluting our air and water.

Good post

Hardware that can be reused ( versus recycled ) by upgrading RAM, hard drive etc. strikes me as very earth friendly but Apple's sealed, non user-serviceable machines clearly miss that mark.
They justify it with their recycling program. But there's no reason Apple couldn't just make their computers upgradeable while still running their program.
