Absolutely nothing. Apple won't be thrilled with Walmart; Walmart is the bad actor in this situation, not the poster. But this happens with every launch. Several people manage to get their device early, whether by buying it at retail or because FedEx/UPS delivered it early.

Typically products that should not be sold are "in the system" as such so that when they attempt to scan the UPC code it dissallows it or shows up a high price like $999.99. A typical Wal-Mart screw up allowing one to be sold.

Next year

A8
2gb ram
Touch ID
8MP iSight camera
Offered in gold

So just sell the '13 Air that you buy tomorrow and have both - and not a day of downtime.

----------

I was actually looking forward to upgrading my iPad 4 with the air. Sad to hear they did not put the Touch ID into it for this release. It is a really great feature that makes using the iPhone 5s an even better experience.

Guess I will wait for the iPad Air 2 to see if they add it then.

It's really not worth waiting for. I'm not foregoing the iPad experience because of one option that's iffy at best for iPad (more appropriate for iPhone, as that's a personal device, and an iPad is frequently shared). Buy one now, then sell it when next model arrives. Never go a day without it. Win.

I am planning on getting my iPad Air through T-Mobile to take advantage of the interest free loan for 24 months plus get the 200MB of free data each month.

Black Friday discounts

does anyone have a guess about discounts this year? I think it was $41 off last year via Apple.

I'm hoping to buy one through an online retailer at a discount and avoid the state tax. Do MacMall or other online stores ship without charging tax?

Since they both have the same performance, it all comes down to screen size. For me, the bigger screen was a quick decision. :)

Right. And it's not just the larger viewing area. The screen is the mechanism whereby you interact with the device. Sometimes a smaller screen makes for a very different interaction experience, especially when playing touch-sensitive games or developing graphic designs, for example. This is partly why I prefer the full sized iPad.

As for availability, the iPad Air is on my list for Santa. I'll let the Elves stand in line on my behalf! :)

I'll be there at 6:30am with Starbucks in hand in my car with the heat on. Once more than 10 people get in line, then I'll get out the car :)

The ONLY reason I'm buying at best buy is because of there awesome rewards points. Buying a iPad air and a retina mini both from BB is a lotta points :D

Best Buy for me too. Lol, most of the employees there all know me.

all this time leading up to the 10/22 event i had my mind set on the new mini. but for $100 more you get a bigger screen and thinner and lighter??! No brainer!

My very first iPad, will be an iPad Air! So excited

it is in the mall, but thats the word from the apple store. said they dont open till 10

I suspect the person you spoke with is misinformed. If it is Lenox Mall, they have always opened early, and the mall usually lets people in before 8AM.

See this thread for the 5s/5C launch

For the iPad 4 last year
At Lenox Square, where the doors to the mall were opened to iPad devotees at 6 a.m., the line had grown to between 300 and 400 by 7:30, still 30 minutes before the new tablet would go on sale.

Even closer, but looking at Apple's website, they offer 4 cellular models plus wifi only so I believe the formula is:

2 Colors * 4 capacities * 5 radio options (wifi +4 diff 4G models) = 40
40 iPads would give you 1 of every type of iPad air going on sale tomorrow.

For people saying 500 units is a small amount, don't forget Apple stores receive multiple shipments per day. For example, when I picked up my MBA in 2012 at 8:30 or so at night, they were putting more models just received into inventory.

Oh yeah, that was my mistake, for some reason I thought they had some magical cell option that covered every carrier with a single model, but I do see the configurator showing the carrier selection - maybe that’s just for account management?

9. One Cellular iPad To Rule Them All? Breaking with the past, Apple has seemingly come up with a single iPad Air cellular model and a single iPad mini with Retina display cellular model compatible with 14 LTE bands—all of the ones Apple currently supports across the globe. As a result, users will conceivably be able to carry a single cellular iPad almost anywhere in the world where LTE is offered, rather than needing to worry about whether a U.S. model only works in North America or is capable of being used across Europe. This is a quiet but big win for traveling iPad users.

That's really cool you got it! Can I ask a few questions?

How is it...over all speed?
Does it feel really light in your hands?
How's the back of it,does look like it will scuff easy?

I don't know if this is considered "thread hijacking" so if it is, maybe you could make a original post talking about your first thoughts and impression. I read the reviews, but I like hearing when "everyday" people get the product.

Lol! You sound like me... We're both "regulars" at our local BB. Haha

What there is only two of each...you will miss your opportunity at #11 :D

Monito

Good news for anyone wanting an iPad Air. I'm waiting for the iPad Mini Retina myself though. Must resist the temptation of instant gratification. Haha.

The only reason I took 4 models are these taglines on the Apple store page:

Your iPad will work only with the carrier you choose.

iPad Air with Wi-Fi + Cellular can roam worldwide on GSM/UMTS networks. In countries without compatible LTE networks, iPad Air will operate on GSM network technologies such as HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA. When you travel internationally, you can use a nano-SIM card from a local carrier.

The bolded portion above is set right above where you select Verizon/Sprint/ATT/TMobile. Verizon/Sprint require separate CDMA versions, while everything else seems to be a variant of GSM, just different frequencies.

[edit] Can't find any stores listing T-Mobile cellular options. Only Verizon/Sprint/ATT on WorstBuy, Tarjhay, and Mall-Wart.

My plan is to wake up at 12AM PST and order online, then pick up later that day.

Wal Mart Neighborhood Market

The only 24 Wal-Mart in my area is a "neighborhood market." This sounds like it might not have a big electronics section if it has one at all. Does anyone know if they're gonna have the iPad? Otherwise, it's wait until morning.

I normally would go to my Apple Store, but I have over $600 in Wal-Mart gift cards.

Does Target carry cellular, higher storage models?

I am going to purchase a silver Verizon iPad Air 64GB. I am planning on ordering online 3:00 AM tonight via Apple Store app and picking up at local Apple store tomorrow but was thinking I could save 5% using my red card if Target carries the higher end models?

Due to seemingly adequate supplies of the iPad Air, Apple will reportedly accept requests for Personal Pickup, allowing prospective buyers to reserve an iPad Air online beginning at 12:01 AM Pacific Time and pick it up at an Apple Store later that same day, avoiding lines.

The BF confirmed that they were told about the Personal Pickup launching at 12:01am in their internal bulletin board. No mention was made of any withholding of any stock level for walkins, including to the managers who told him that as far as they know the full stock is up for grabs via Pickup so yes they could be sold out before doors open and if that happens they will inform the line ahead of time.

----------

Showing some manufacturing muscle after that 5s launch.

They are believed to have produced and sold about 7 million 5s units across 3 colors, sizes and a ton of carriers with a good 8 unique models needed to cover all of them.

that's not anything to snark about given that Apple doesn't stock pile for security reasons.

For those that didn't do personal pickup, when do the apple stores begin actively selling the ipad airs? I remember they had to wait as late as 5pm before.

I will be at my Apple store at noon on Friday. Fingers crossed for availability!

You won't likely getting one then. By noon between pickup and line up they will likely be sold out. You are best off doing the pickup option since that unit will be paid for and is legally yours. Once you get the confirmation it is ready for you then you can go anytime you want over the weekend (within the terms they tell you at time of purchase but i would imagine it's more than 1 day to come and get it)

----------

That sucks lots of air and no mini retina. I am still waiting the mini retina is going to be worth it.

???

The Mini isn't launching tomorrow. Stock levels on the Air will have zero to do with levels when it does launch.

----------

Yea, pre-order would be nice. But, the announcement of a reservation means crowds will not be as bad.

IT'S NOT A RESERVATION. Folks need to be clear about this. It's a purchase. Paid via the online system, fulfilled by store stock.

----------

Take a picture of it opened?

Given that Walmart has almost been sued several times for violating street date on numerous books, movies etc. I wouldn't be shocked if it was legit.

They will open at 8am tomorrow but who knows at this point if there will be stock. Given the issues with resellers at the iPhone launch it is very possible that they will open up all units to Personal Pickup and will be sold out of at least some models before doors open.
