Apple's next-generation Studio Display is expected to arrive early next year, and a new report allegedly provides a couple more details on the external monitor's capabilities.

According to internal Apple code seen by Macworld, the new external display will feature a variable refresh rate capable of up to 120Hz – aka ProMotion – as well as support for HDR content. The current Studio Display is limited to 60Hz and supports SDR, but not HDR.

Macworld's Filipe Espósito suggests new HDR support points to Apple's use of improved panel technology that can achieve higher brightness. Indeed, analyst Ross Young believes Apple's next Studio Display could use a mini-LED panel similar to the MacBook Pro, which features superior brightness, contrast, and color accuracy compared to the existing LCD panel.

Elsewhere, the code references a "J527" identifier for the monitor, and suggests the model is powered by the A19 chip – two details that have also been previously discovered in code reviewed by MacRumors. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has also referenced "J527" as the internal codename for one of the displays that Apple is developing.

Apple launched the 27-inch Studio Display in March 2022 alongside the Mac Studio. It features a 5K resolution, 600 nits of brightness, built-in webcam and speakers, one Thunderbolt 3 port, and three USB-C ports. Pricing in the U.S. starts at $1,599. The new version Apple is developing could arrive as early as this spring alongside new Macs with M5 chips.

I still have an old Ultrafine 5K but since I got my MBP m4 I can't look at it the same way. Variable refresh rate and mini LED make the screen of the MacBook Pro just so much easier on the eyes. Only thing bothering me is the dithering, which you can easily disable with a third party app.

All the macbook pros already use said mini led tech and at consumer level when you consider everything else packed into the macbook pro you're not paying a whole lot for mini led premium. that tech has already come down quite a bit as industry keeps trying to perfect oled (which won't ever fully happen. organic material will always decay). and micro led that hopes to eventually replace oled.

Glad to see the comments mostly positive. Is it expensive, yes. Does it look phenomenal, yes. I have a different 5K monitor, and while it was cheaper I should have just sprung for the studio display.

The speakers and webcam are nothing crazy, but they are things that are all baked into the monitor and something to seriously consider. Makes for clean set up.

Just wondering why Apple is not using OLED for the new displays, considering the iPad Pro/iPhone is OLED and supposedly so is the next MacBook Pro?

I own a Studio Display and I love it, but I also have an LG C5 right above it and the colors on the OLED are incredible.

I bought an ASD on release and it's easily the best monitor I've ever used. An ASD 2 like this will be an insta-buy pushing my ASD to my second screen.

Hope that means the Studio Display 1 goes on sale. I don’t need 120hz or HDR right now. But would like a Studio Display for better compatibility with my M4 iPad Pro.

I know that the Studio Display didn't play particularly well with PCs when it was first released - has that situation improved any? Anyone using these for both a Mac and a PC on their desk?
Yes, it works perfectly. You just need to install latest AppleBootCamp with Apple keyboard on side to control brightness (Logitech doesn't work) + WJESOG USB-C to DisplayPort cable with extra USB-A plug for speakers, microphone and camera. Even automatic brightness works as well. Hopefully the new one would still have Windows drivers or use the existing ones.

Costs, and to separate the two product lines to encourage people to 'upgrade' to OLED.

Waiting for this one, will also check out the new 32” monitor if they release one, it has to work with my works Dell laptop too though, luckily it has a TB4 port.

Yeah there’s no way Apple has this priced at $1599. They will probably charge more like $1599 for an upgraded base model and have a best model with 120Hz and charge $2299 for it.
I paid just over US$1500 for my LG 32" 6K after discounts, and the LG 6K includes Thunderbolt 5, 99% AdobeRGB coverage, and height adjustable stand. If the Apple Studio Display 2 is a 27" 5K monitor, then $2299 seems way too expensive unless it's mini-LED with 1600 nits of brightness or something like that (which I highly doubt). OLED at that price would be interesting though, for those who don't mind the 27" size.

That's great news. Thanks! Has me excited to see what Apple releases.
