I would agree. I wish Apple would do screen scaling like Windows. For some reason, Windows seems to scale better. I don't remember the technical reasons why, but there's a word for what they do.

Yeah, I don't understand this either

I dual boot my Hack and Windows is so much more flexible on the scaling and "looking great no matter what you choose".

I actually purposely moved an older relative off a Mac Mini back over to Windows for this exact reason
(he dials up the scale a ton -- Windows handles it better)

60hz. What a joke! Is this 2014? 2004?

This is a true "if Steve were around" situation

I guarantee you he'd have ProMotion on basically all the Apple products by now
It's not new to have 120hz and it's a much better experience for the customer

That was one of Steve's key things... When something is better, get it out to everyone

Damn, interesting. I am wondering if there is an update in March. I for one would love to see the current XDR drop in price like 50% and have a V.2 keeping the current pricing. Please let me be delusional. LMAO
For me the ASD is a bit too small and I rather have a dumb display without speakers/webcam.

Have to wait for ThunderBolt 5 as TB3/4 does not have the bandwidth.
I'm not convinced that's the case. I think they just don't prioritize that product in regards to R&D.

Agreed. Apple is the king of multimedia and it's frankly embarassing that Dell is taking laps around Apple's panels.

I used to feel that way - but you get used to it quickly and then forget ..
I agree with you for 4K at 27" but I can't use 4K at 32" like some here are suggesting, as the resolution just isn't enough at that size, not Retina. I had a 4K 32" briefly but just didn't like it. This makes sense though, at my ~22" seating distance.

4K at 27" is 163 ppi, requiring a 21" seating distance to be Retina.
4K at 32" is 138 ppi, requiring a 25" seating distance to be Retina.

I got mines at release and still love them like the first day.

DSC can do it just fine. They currently use DSC on the 6k display.

People who have done the bandwidth calculations note that while you can get higher than 60Hz refresh with DSC over a single ThunderBolt 4 cable, you have to sacrifice quality to do it and Apple is not willing to do that for a higher refresh rate.

And since 4K+ at "retina" PPI values is effectively exclusive to macOS (even though Windows can handle it, as well), LCD panel OEM manufacturers have no incentive to offer more than 60Hz in a panel, even if that refresh rate could be supported over DisplayPort or HDMI on Windows.

To nitpick, the Apple Studio Display is not 10-bit. It's 8-bit FRC.

Yes, my primary use is photography. It keeps a roof over my head, so everything else is secondary. I need great resolution, a wide color space, plenty of contrast and the ability to regularly ensure that my monitor's colors are calibrated. I'm not into gaming so having the highest refresh rate isn't a primary need for me.

So whether it's an Apple monitor that meets my needs or another brand, I don't care. But a lot of brands don't meet my needs because they're not good enough at the qualities I'm looking for.

I was excited to hear about the Samsung Viewfinity 5K 27" monitor, but it looks like there are some issues that have to do with its "smart" software and controls that rub me the wrong way. Would love it if they (or Apple) released a "dumb" monitor with great specs and no frills, but I realize they're not going to do that for their own business reasons.

Thank you. Exactly what I was wondering. :)

Thanks. One of the early hardware reviews I checked said the panel was 10-bit native, but others were not sure if it was 10-bit or 8-bit FRC.

Regardless, it appears that even with DSC, you can't push 120Hz over a single TB4 cable without it impacting image quality in some way. So it is not (just) laziness on Apple's part.

I LOVE mine! Especially since I got it at an ever lower price from Costco a while back. $1200

LG 42-inch OLED or Apple Studio Display seem to be the best two options I've researched. Wish Apple had some larger options that didn't break the bank.

I wonder if Apple realizes (or cares) how much more attractive their monitors would be with an additional input.

So many folks want their expensive monitor to be able to also plug in:

1. Streaming box
2. Game Console
3. Windows or other computer
4. Laptop alongside Desktop
etc

Single input kills interest for many folks straight away, myself included

I believe every single Apple display has been single-input, so it seems clear that Apple's philosophy for displays is they expect owners to plug said display into one Mac (desktop or laptop) and nothing else.

Hopefully we're going to get a 29-30" update soon. At that size, it'd be something like 5.5K, but I'd actually prefer the same 5K as before. That'd be similar to a pixel doubled/quadrupled version of the Apple 30" Cinema HD Display.

An Apple 5120x3200 30" display would be totally awesome at 201 ppi.
That would be my dream. I love the XDR but that price tag is just not feasible or justifiable. I would buy one for $2.5k (nano/stand)

If only they would make it 32”
Ditch the speakers, glass and hub and knock off a few hundred bucks I’d be interested

I just want a no frills 32” 5k display with a decent panel at a reasonable price

Making due with 32” 4k until I find such
What machine are you connecting to that display? I’m just wondering why they are not just making this thing into an iMac Pro.
