I think Apple generally targets ~218ppi on their desktop monitor. So regardless of marketing, there is a real threshold Apple is seeking. The iMac 4.5K, ASD, and XDR all have 218ppi.

I don't disagree there is a threshold apple is targeting. I'm just positing that that threshold is largely arbitrary

The angular resolution of the (typical) human eye, and viewing distance, determines the minimum display DPI for not being able to see individual pixels.

yes I understand all of that. but there are so many variables -"(typical) human eye," viewing distance, etc etc that where apple decided that line is remains largely arbitrary, probably had a lot to do with manufacturing and marketing

Ditch the speakers, glass and hub and knock off a few hundred bucks I’d be interested
...
Ditch the speakers??! The beauty of Apple's Studio Display (besides the incredible build quality) is that it is an all-in-one display, camera, and speakers. Ditching the speakers would make it an immediate "no" for me.

Being fortunate enough to have room on my desk for quite good speakers I’ve no need for built in monitor speakers, which in any case would be insufficient for my needs. They merely add unnecessary extra expense to the monitor. Although I suspect they are a cheap add in manufacturing wise though serving to increase to price point.

There are multiple Chinese OEMs who are offering 5K Retina 27" displays under $1000, but almost all of them only advertise on alibaba and other Chinese commerce sites. These use DisplayPort and/or HDMI, not Thunderbolt, so they have a separate USB-B cable input to support the onboard USB ports.
Sure, there are always knockoffs for cheap. But that’s not the type of product anyone here would want to buy.

There’s the Samsung M8(?) that occasionally is available for under $1k with discounts but MSRP is the same as the ASD because 5K is still expensive.

An updated display would most likely support 120 Hz and for this to work, it as well as the computer it connects to would need to support Thunderbolt 5.
Thunderbolt 4 supports DisplayPort 2.0. Via UHBR20, this should sport enough bandwidth to drive a 5K monitor at 120Hz.

You can already run 8K monitors at 60. Since 8K is over twice as many pixels as 5k, the fact that 8K60 works strongly suggests that 5K120 should be no problem.

You can control brightness of dual monitors independently right from the keyboard, but you can't control both together at the same time. Is this what you mean?
Exactly. Unless you use a 3rd party solution such as Lunar App. This is very impractical IMO.

Pretty bad deal still. I got a 1400nit, 4K 160Hz, miniLED monitor for $700 on Amazon. Actually better spec than the Pro Display XDR for a fraction of the cost.

Looks like a smashing display, I'll check it out!

According to that review, their unit had horrible backlight bleed.

Colour out of the box was not awesome, but not bad either.

Mind you, some Studio Display owners have reported significant backlight bleed too, so as always, YMMV.

My experience with this monitor (as a second display next to a studio display) was disappointing. Calibration out of the box not great, some whine and bleed not good. Returned after 4 days.

It might have been a lemon.

Ummmm, I'd suggest the VESA one for $1299... and then one can spend maybe $30-$100 to get dirt-cheap, third-party VESA mount to do all of the things that cost hundreds extra in Apple mounts... like either of these for < $60...

There's also the kind to connect to the back lip of a desk too if one wants a floating, rotatable ASD that takes up pretty much no desktop space at all.
The $30 VESA monitor arms will do the job in a set-it-and-forget-it situation. But, if you are going to be constantly adjusting the position of your monitor, I recommend spending the money for an Ergotron or similar. Ergotrons are expensive, but they are built like a tank and include a 10 year warrantee.

No self respecting pro would use this now… why restrict yourself to a screen when the whole world can be your screen using Vision Pro.

Apples screens are some of the best in this price category… some from 20 years back are still better than some modern screens.
The cost of entry into a Vision Pro is $3500 or more. That's more than I would want to spend for a screen. Some of us don't relish the idea of closing ourselves off to the world at any price.

For a fraction of the price of Vision Pro, I got two BenQ 27" 1440p displays. They look good enough for me and I still get to use my peripheral vision.

Sure sure, of course, ...with the obvious exception that the AVP does NOT close you off to the rest of the world, ...Not at all, ...literally !!!

I'm sure you have seen a multitude of actual reviews & uses, where people are using the AVP, all over the place outside and around people, ...extensively, ...demonstrating that they are NOT closed off from the rest of the world, in any way, shape or form.

...or are you just being obtuse to the verifiable facts?

Still amazes me in any thread comparing monitors how many people do not recognize that while it doesn't sound like a big difference on paper, 5k is substantially higher resolution than 4k. It's a difference of 8.3 and 14.7 million pixels — literally 77% more pixels. Even if every other spec about two monitors is the same, that is a difference too important to dismiss.

It turns out that the VESA mount one isn't actually available even though it's listed in Best Buy's sale. If it ever was really part of the sale, there weren't a lot of them available.

I just bought one recently at full price after being unable to score one in the refurb store. While online outlets were discounting other models, the standard glass VESA mount remained at full price. I even had to wait 2 weeks for them to be back in stock before I could place my order from B&H.

I have watched several reviews. Most of the reviewers either state or demonstrate that the Vision Pro blocks your peripheral vision. That's if you are using the pass through camera. Then, there are activities that don't use the pass through camera such as watching a movie, or viewing on of the virtual environments. I define both of those situation as "closed off to the world" whether partially or completely.

I've also seen footage of people riding a subway while wearing Vision Pro. I'm not against the existence of this product, if you have the money and want one, then go for it and enjoy. But, I would at least keep it at the house where I have some control over my environment. By riding the subway with it, you make yourself an easy target... because you are at least partially closed off to the world.
