Because there are whiteboards, people and other things in the office that aren't always suitable to show on meetings. A camera that only shows a small area in front of the display is fine. One that follows moving objects around the whole damn room is not.

Isn't that why they have the option to blur the background? Not sure what I'm missing here.

I just did a quick check in FaceTime to ensure I'm not missing anything.

The framing is slightly better with Stage Manager turned on, but it is still showing my head at the top and most of my torso in the frame, and the picture slides from side to side with every little move of my head, but with a delay. The only option I see for blur is Portrait, which doesn't do much.

I just don't think a normal ****ing camera with normal ****ing framing and half-decent image quality is too much to ask when spending $1900 on a monitor.

(Assuming Apple has some data to back up the nonsense decisions that led to implementation of the super-wide lens, the least they could do is provide a settings app that would allow users with particular requirements to have an acceptable experience, albeit at inferior image quality.)

You can blur the background though and if there's anything of a confidential/sensitive nature in a room, I'll either not have my camera on or make sure its moved or I take the call from somewhere else. But I guess that might not be possible for everyone.

I recently ran into the Zoom issue again, where I have 2 Studio Displays and it keeps defaulting to the camera on the display that is to my right (not the one directly in front of me). In the past, starting my meeting and then modifying my Video settings in Zoom Settings would allow me to toggle between both cameras, but now, whatever I pick, it defaults to the right one.

Not the end of the world, but a weird setback that requires a change in workflow.

I have same issue. It's a Zoom problem. It's the only app I have that won't respect the change in camera choice when two cameras appear to have the same name in the picker dropdown (Studio Display Camera).

The workaround is a little bit of a hassle, but it works. Disconnect the undesired monitor, start Zoom, go to settings/video, ensure it's using the correct camera, reconnect monitor. You may have to reselect the correct camera again in Zoom settings but it should now keep the proper camera. At least for a while.

Every other app I use will respect the camera selections (WebEx, Teams, FaceTime)

BTW, I have reported the bug to Zoom, so we'll see.

Thank you for the tip! I will try that after my (Zoom) meetings this afternoon (bad timing as I jump into meetings in 2 mins).

I too will report it to Zoom!

well turning off Center Stage will make sure everything is always in screen.
Center Stage Off = Everything the camera can see is visible
Center Stage On = Picture gets zoomed to focus on the people in front of the cam

You blur the background on your web meeting via Zoom/Google Meet/etc, not via ASD.

As previously stated, I’m using FaceTime, which as far as I can tell doesn’t have the feature.

That is beside the point though. There are so many good reasons for Apple to have chosen differently, and apparently very few good ones, if any, for the choices they made.

A good portion of the issues could be easily fixed with a settings app, although I fear the image quality will require a hardware fix.

You see a lot of complaining in this thread; just wanted to say something good about it. It really is an excellent display and completely worth it if you're the sort that's picky about image quality.
I 100% agree. I care an awful lot about text quality (the Day Job is programming) and they're really easy on the eyes.

A small point: I've gone with a two monitor setup with the second in portrait mode and the uniform bezels + lack of (what would be sideways) branding on the display face is a real win. It's just an elegant solution.

I might be in the honeymoon period, but I love the Studio Displays. After some initial problems with my vesa mount arm dropping and having to configure that, they’re really, really nice.

The camera, as most know, is just awful. I’ve resorted to use an external camera because it’s just so bad compared to the external one.

I’ll form my opinions over the next few days, bur in the few hours I’ve had the setup, I’m not regretting my purchase.

I've seen people criticise the Studio Display saying "if you have two, then you've paid for a set of speakers that you can't use".

It's worth saying that you can create a "Multi-output Device" in Audio MIDI Setup.app, which combines audio outputs from more than one device into a single virtual device, and have the speakers blaring from both displays at once!

USB ports and sound still borked if I have even just one USB peripheral connected for more than half a day. Have to not use the ports at all until it is fixed.

@ct2k7 Nice to read that you are having a positive experience with your Studio Displays. I wondered which (manufacturer/model) Vesa mount you're using?

I got some "cheap" ones from Amazon, but I would have preferred the Humanscale ones if they had them in stock and they weren't a ridiculous price at the time (2020, after COVID closures)

I’ve had no significant issues with the USB ports on either of my displays (both connected to the same 14” MBP), nor issues with audio. The monitor’s firmware is up to date.

IMHO, the camera isn’t nearly as bad as people make it out to be. It may not be 4K @ 60Hz, but it’s really not that bad. While blowing the image up to 27” at 5K is going to exacerbate any flaws, I’ve asked people at the other end of business meetings and they all say I look fine on their end.

Unfortunately, my team did notice and asked if I was using a cheap camera… (which stung for a 1.5k product) granted they’re used to seeing me with a better camera.

I suppose it’s better if your meeting party hasn’t seen you through good cameras today, but that’s not the case. Even my MBA seems to have better quality.

Did you update the firmware?
When I look at the image from my ASD and the image from a Logitech C920 they both look just as good but the ASD tracks me as I move. It works very well IMO.

Depends what you are connected to.

On the Mac Studio sub forum the problem looks like it is happening to Mac Studios with M1 Max And Ultra.
