There's really no downside to getting rid of the optical drive.

IBM and Sony have been doing it for years - my Thinkpad X31 is one of the best laptops I've ever owned and still works great to this day.

The extremely light weight and portability is worth leaving the external optical drive behind. They're starting to make really light external opticals anyways.

I am not a fan of flash usb sticks for permanent storage.

1. The life span is still not that long. We seem to kill at least one or 2 a year.
I'd think the lifespan is much longer for a USB stick... I've still got the same 1GB stick I had purchased 4 years ago on my keychain. I've scratched numberous CD's/DVD's in that timespan.
2. They are not large enough for permanent storage (ie 4.7 gig DVD's are pretty cheap (100 for $17), but a 2 gig USB stick still costs about $50.
2GB Stick = $12.99 (Namebrand ones for $20)
3. How do you label a USB stick?
All 3 various sticks that I've got have a white space on them for labelling. Otherwise just put on a sticker.
4. CD/DVD's are thin to store in a notebook, where as USB sticks are still thicker making storing them a little bulkier.
Yeah, its thicker for a USB stick, but they are still much smaller in the overall size of them. Ever walk around with a CD or DVD in your pocket? Ever have a CD or DVD on your keychain?

If CD/DVD are on the way out, then we need better ways for permanent storage. I am a big user of documents, pictures, videos, etc.
I'm not going to the exteme and saying they are on thier way out - I think CD's and DVD still have some life left in them, but with that being said I can't think of a CD or DVD I've burned or used other than Leopard and iLife installations.

I'd say all of the arguements you made above could have been said in 2000 when the floppy drive started to go away. A Floppy disk was cheaper than CD's, smaller, less breakable (I never scratched a floppy) and with all those white stickers around labelling was easy! :)

I am also not a fan of external drives either. With all that said, a sub-notebook is ok for taking to school or to meetings, but for everyday use, I like having things built in and power. I really do not like being tied to a desk, I want the freedom to use my laptop where-ever.
I agree with this. I wouldn't want to deal with external drives. Even though I PREFER not to have an optical drive I'd still carry it around in my bag just for that rare time I do need it!
However I do agree with one thing - the smaller and light-weight the better.
Laptops lately are the size of small desktops (look at the monsters from Dell and Toshiba).

I am excited to see what Steve Jobs shows us.... Steve usually has some innovative announcements that just blows away our expectations.....

Unless its something truely ground breaking I don't think it'll be anything that makes me want to give up my MBP.

I agree with you...the goal of the Ultra-portable is going to be just that, portability. Most people only use the optical drive to either rip Cd's or install programs, and that can be done at you home setting. When on the road, you just work off of the flash memory. As for watching DVD's, Apple would rather you buy from iTunes anyway.

Anyone think Apple might set this up as a Sync device through iTunes. Ie. you sync everything my iTunes, to App's, and Documents all through USB. Although, this model would require people to have a Mac already, thus would cut out first time Mac sales. Could be very interesting though.

What is it with iTunes these days? Is it supposed to replace Leopard as the new operating system? Will it also start doing the laundry? It plays music, video, connects to the web (musicstore, trailers). It syncs iPods, iPhone, iTouch, appleTV with your media files, address book, iCal,etc.
It is a freaking mp3 player. It plays music. Keep your god damn code of my non-music stuff! I want a dedicated music program (iTunes), a dedicated video library program (iVideo or whatever) and a dedicated sync program (that also syncs iPods).

In regards to the optical drive:

SNIP

If you remove the optical drive, you save a ton of space which could be used more more useful things. Some things you could do with all of that space:
1. ExpressCard34 slot so you could put in an EV-DO or HSPDA wireless card
2. Extra USB port, FW800 (the 12'' pb only had 400)
3. Possibly a second ssd.
4. Larger battery for more battery life
5. Reduced weight because you don't have the optical drive.
6. Cooler running machine because the components wouldn't have to be packed so tightly, and you can have a better cooling system.

There's really no downside to getting rid of the optical drive.

1. I very much doubt there will be any space for slots.
2. Agreed, no optical means you need an extra nicely bussed FW port for the external DVD drive. FW800 would also be nice. More than 2 USB would also be very handy.
3. HDMI
4. Yep - power

Couldn't agree more. If this machine does come, it is not intended to be a primary machine. It's target is people who already have a workhorse style computer.

Make the thing smaller and/or use that space for an extra battery.

Agreed. It would make a wonderful device to show a client progress on a project. Heck, depending on the inputs, it would probably make a nice little recorder / field monitor on set.

The macbook pro is rumored to be getting some kind of update as well. Always wise to wait until macworld, especially since the rumors about the laptops are rampant.

To could always pick one up within two weeks of macworld (Jan 15th) and get a full refund should one come out. Of course though you cannot custom order anything or apple will not exchange it.

So, there might be some upgrade on the MBP. Yeah, I guess it's good to wait then. No rush. Oh, I hope there's some cool upgrade on MBP.

Am I the only person who sees something wrong with a multi-touch trackpad. MULTI-TOUCH IS A TOUCHABLE SCREEN. Why would apple trade the trackpad for multi touch? Apple might make a touch screen on the SCREEN not on the trackpad though.
Actually the only other shipping/selling (in any quantity) implementation of multi-touch besides iPhone was by a company called FingerWorks who made chorded keyboards and trackpads. Apple bought this company out and is using their patents as the basis of much of what it is doing with multi-touch gestures.

So it would be far to say that the original use of multi-touch, and almost the only use of it in commercial products previous to the iPhone was for trackpads and keyboards, and *not* for a screen. :)

Geez, some very weird statements are being made here.

For starters optical media is not on it's way out because Apple will be bundling this laptop with an external drive.

To make things even more clear for the haters out there it's not designed to replace the computer you're using at the moment. What apple is doing is filling a hole in the market by diversifying.

There are many 15.4 and 17 inch laptops out there and now they want to cater to those dreaming about an ultra light laptop they can, without sweating, carry with them every where they go, kind of like a novel. It's perfect for sales people, students, journalists/bloggers and anyone who want to surf, do word processing or fiddle with a computer on the go.

It's a compliment to your current power house. Everybody won't be able to afford it or need it. It's niche product, kind of like the 17 inch Macbook pro.

Just a note - I burn CDs and DVDs all the time. Great, simple backups for digital pics and e-mail. And as far as digital delivery of movies goes, Jobs may want us to move away from Netflix, but I want the higher resolution of a DVD and the expansive selection of Netflix. There may be some technical advances to take care of the resolution, but I doubt that Apple will ever offer the kind of non mainstream-stuff that Netflix does.

For the same reason I'm not yet interested in Audiobooks. I'd love to have a reading device with me all the time, but the content is way too limited now, and probably always will be in a commercialized service.

When most of someone's posts consist of "LOL" and "you apple fanboys" or some slight variation, they start to lose credibility after a while ;)

Anyway, slightly on-topic, I wonder if Apple will really include an HDMI output on the subnotebook instead of DVI, would certainly save space over the big DVI connector...

Oh yeah, just remembered "mini-dvi", good luck finding that dongle when you need it though (since only Apple seems to use it).

The only advantage of mini-dvi over HDMI is that mini-dvi can still deliver Analogue if needed, so if your aiming this thing at people who do presentations then they are going to want a way to connect to old projection equipement.

They might go for UDI as Apple is one of the main developers for the standard. This gives them DVI and HDMI compatibility, although still not sure that then lets them do the dongle to deliver Analogue as well.

There is also DisplayPort which is not compatible with anything, so would seem an odd choice.

Interesting things to notice

So, several interesting things that I'm going to point out here.

1. On the right side of the photo, we see a book. You can make out "ANGLAR OCH". Quick google search reveals it to be the Swedish version of Dan Brown's Angels and Demons (or daemons if you prefer) Book Cover. The glossiness almost makes it look like a library book.

2. On the top right, you can see another book, cover curling up. You can make out "984" and some lines below. Looks an awful lot like this book to me. A great book to have in-scene with a mac, to be sure.

3. The business card. Now, i'm not an apple employee, but looking on flickr i find This version of an apple card. This flickr find could certainly be outdated. the Vertical version is made more believable by This apple retail card

That said, i see three possibilities under which this could be real:

1. Swedish speaking employee at the Cupertino Campus - the Library-book feel of the copy of Angels and Demons (also the fact that someone would have that hardback on their desk this long after the release of the book) makes that feel unlikely

2. An employee at apple in sweden. I find it exceedingly unlikely that an employee at apple sweden would have two unreleased products on his/her desk. two, as the iphone is yet to be released in sweden. beyond that, i believe that apple runs all their european operations from Cork, Ireland.

3. a swedish employee in cupertino was home for xmas and took this photo. also vanishingly unlikely.

my guess for most likely explanation:

1. swedish fanboy created this and then posted it at 9pm CET, rather than an apple employee posting at 12:39pm in cupertino

All that said. I can't wait for the keynote :)

UPDATE:
I just noticed something else. Under the copy of Angels and Demons is last month's Wired. You can't get that in europe (unless you pay an outrageous subscription fee). I dunno, I'm on the fence. If it's real though, I'd put good money on scenario 1.

The biggest reason why it's fake is that the picture is taken by a cellphone(i.e is not clear) and that there's only one picture. Very typical when it comes to spyshots.

I still can't believe people are giving credence to this image. There is no need
for this level of investigation, the plain and simple fact is that keyboard would be unuseable due to the size of that button.

Mac Mini Pic

Picture is FAKE. Look at the key board. It is ancient. The style is also ancient. MacBook Nano will be the size of MacBook, MINUS the edges around the key board and screen would have minimal edge like iPhone. This will make this mini note book about an inch or more shorter in width and depth compared to MacBook and still maintain 13" screen. Wonder will they would introduce the iPod Nano colors !!

The foot print is ONE INCH shorter in width and depth from MacBook, modern looking like iPhone with half the weight and thickness of MacPr0

13 inches is NOT ultraportable, no matter how thin or light it is.

Why do people keep calling it that?! If indeed it is 13 inches, my guess is that it is either a 13 inch MBP or a completely new revision of the MB line, not an entirely new line of MB "nano"....why would they even call it that when the computer has the same footprint as the MB and when people see them side by side in a store, it will sound ridiculous to call it a mini version unless it's an actual mini computer, which this would not be!!!

Waiting for January 15 to join the cult! me too bro!

rofl.. try $4000.

um...

Its just really unlikely that people at apple who work to develop these things would put it on a really messy desk like that... If they were testing it they would probably not be allowed test it at their own desk and it really pisses me off when people make fake stuff without any comments to it ... but it would be cool if they did make a macbook like that :)
