all of the Tech subs need to stay dark until reddit relents. 48 hours is nothing but virtue signal...
and moderate them how? 'wild west' is gonna result in a lot of trolls intentionally spreading hate speech.
That’s what they are doing.all of the Tech subs need to stay dark until reddit relents. 48 hours is nothing but virtue signal...
That won’t work. Each subreddit consists of extremely knowledgeable users in the context of that subreddit. AI isn’t exactly known for its accuracy. And for IPO, they have to be careful. If they get caught committing fraud the SEC can get rather heavy handed.I believe Nothing matters. If ChatGPT’s viral success is anything to go by, Reddit can maintain phantom activity via AI. It could be hard still, but no longer unthinkable.
User is always the loser that can never win.
Heck, Reddit can be a test ground for mass scale AI-generated user activities. In just years, those bots can evolve into countless intelligent enough AI bots that can and will manipulate general public. All that stakeholders need is really just a shell, a brand without the need of any substance.
IMHO, Apollo wasn’t better. Different, yes.I actually started using Reddit with their official app, then switched to the web version when I wasn’t as deep into the rabbit hole as I was before. I never used Apollo but everyone makes it sound like it is so much better than the official app. I’d like to know, what made it better?
Define "downhill?"They could, but without moderators, expect the quality of these forums to go downhill very quickly.
That info came from USERS. Users can just gather somewhere else. It's not hard. Just pick a place and spread the word. Eventually something else will catch on.I don’t know what I would have done all these years without Reddit, I first started using it for the jailbreak sub, invaluable how you could always go there for help and be able to directly talk to devs.
Since then I’ve branched out to so many topics of interest, you could almost find an answer to anything down to the local level. Not sure where to go now, what can replace something like that? And unlike what some have said, I never found it anything like twitter, I stayed away from politics on Reddit. Apollo was one of my favorite apps, I think it was the first app to support live activities, and the widget support was the best.
It’s ridiculous that one greedy bastard can have so much control over information and destroy a resource that so many use like this.
It's still a virtue signal. How about go on a hunger strike! Taking a vacation from Reddit doesn't really require significant pain 🤣all of the Tech subs need to stay dark until reddit relents. 48 hours is nothing but virtue signal...
As a fellow web developer, their website (well, "new Reddit") is a steaming pile of garbage — much like their mobile website and official mobile apps — and will act glitchy on anything short of at least 32 GB of RAM. Seriously, my work laptop is a 14" MacBook Pro with M1 Max and 32 GB RAM and the damn thing still struggles in Safari.I kinda wonder if Reddit will just not allow subreddits to be turned off tomorrow or turn these back on. The site is acting very glitchy for me this evening, and as a web developer it tingles my spidey senses that something is going on under the hood.
I quit using Reddit (and deleted my account) a while ago, mostly because I can't stand the meme-heavy self-deprecating culture and negativity. Too much politics, as well.Sadly, I agree.
Would love to see Subreddits move people to Discord instead. Discord has threads/posts/live-streaming etc.
Discord requires zero phone numbers, I don’t know where you got that?I quit using Reddit (and deleted my account) a while ago, mostly because I can't stand the meme-heavy self-deprecating culture. Too much politics, as well.
Tried Discord on my Mac and it required my phone number to sign up, so I immediately deleted it. Tried signing up again last week and they still require it.
Nope.

Interesting.. last time MacRumors got roasted for calling Reddit's pricing 'unreasonable' but turning a blind eye to Apple's 'unreasonable' pricing on things like $2,000 SSD drives when basically the same thing from others costs $300.
Apple-related subreddit /r/apple has gone dark in protest of Reddit's upcoming API pricing changes affecting third-party Reddit apps. The subreddit is now private, meaning that users can no longer view or submit posts, and the moderators behind the community said it will remain that way for the next 48 hours, or potentially longer if necessary.

/r/apple is one of many subreddits that will be going dark over the next few days, alongside /r/videos, /r/gaming, /r/sports, /r/aww, and others. The organized blackout comes after Reddit announced expensive API pricing changes that threaten to put some third-party Reddit apps out of business. Christian Selig, developer of popular Reddit app Apollo, said he would owe Reddit around $20 million per year under the new policy. As a result, Selig announced that Apollo will be shutting down at the end of the month.
Reddit's API provides apps like Apollo with Reddit data like posts and comments, and it has been free to use until now. Selig said it is understandable for Reddit to begin charging for access to the API, but the pricing is prohibitively expensive. Selig also said Reddit provided him with minimal time to prepare for the changes.
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman addressed the topic in a Reddit post last week, but his comments were heavily criticized and received thousands of downvotes from Reddit users. Despite backlash from the community, Reddit has yet to reverse course on its plans so far, and the API changes are set to go into effect on July 1 if upheld.

Well, I can reluctantly say using AI to fake activities, or one step back, participate in those subreddits, is still difficult for the time being. That will solve in time tho. That won’t work. Each subreddit consists of extremely knowledgeable users in the context of that subreddit. AI isn’t exactly known for its accuracy. And for IPO, they have to be careful. If they get caught committing fraud the SEC can get rather heavy handed.
It depends on the server. I've never had to verify my number before, but today I joined a server that required it.Discord requires zero phone numbers, I don’t know where you got that?
Between the little UI tweaks, the swiping interactions, the lack of ads, etc, I don't see how you could say Apollo wasn't a better app (personal preference for the first-party app aside).IMHO, Apollo wasn’t better. Different, yes.
I have Apollo Pro+ Ultra. I still prefer the official app.
