So I'm no longer allowed to invent and then profit from my invention. I wonder if the legal fees, etc. that Apple and others have to pay costs more than the products themselves.
If Apple opens all up and someone gets robbed by the app - they will then sue Apple for allowing the bad app to be installed.

Apple keeps getting in trouble with regulators around the world, the EU, Japan, South Korea, the USA. Could Apple be doing something Anticompetitive? Nah, of course the problem is everyone else! /s
Correct. Could it be that apples business practices are legal, but some locations do t like that apple has a legal, but tight grip on the iPhone? Nah. /s

Opening it up wouldn’t stop devs and customers from using the App Store exclusively. It would enable the ones who aren’t “fine” with the status quo explore other avenues.
for many, sure it would
epic is a classic example. they had millions of iOS users and they would have gladly forced users to download EGS and stop updating on the App Store.

As an iPhone user, I have no choice - it's the App Store or nothing - the smartphone thing is a red herring. I already have an iPhone, iPad - and I have no choice - hence monopoly. And Apple takes advantage of that.
The choice is that you buy other products. That's why this isn't a monopoly or even close to a monopoly. There's an obvious problem at this point where the app store is the only way into Apple's ecosystem, but calling it a monopoly is definitely the wrong terminology.

Apple has a ~20% share of the US smartphone market (see link). How is that anywhere close to a monopoly when the other 80% of the market is Android? This just sounds silly.

One of my folks once worked for the anti-trust division of the DoJ - I grew up hearing about monopolies, and generally support antitrust efforts - but this makes no sense to me whatsoever.
Those are world wide numbers not US numbers......

"At Apple, we innovate every day to make technology people love—designing products that work seamlessly together, protect people’s privacy and security, and create a magical experience for our users. This lawsuit threatens who we are and the principles that set Apple products apart in fiercely competitive markets."

The same old nonsense PR speak BS as always from Apple
Go get 'em DOJ

Antitrust, two questions all that is needed.
1. Market share less than 50%?
2. Alternative consumer options in the market?
Yes to both, Government sit down and shut up.

Your choice was to buy into the Apple ecosystem, you could have chosen Android. See your argument fails that easily

so not sure how Apple in the smartphone market is breaking anti-trust laws.
what is apple doing with the iPhone that makes it deliberately awkward to buy an alternative Smartphone.

what is it that apple do that stops/hinders consumers from buying the alternatives to iPhone?
I don’t get that either, there is nothing about the iPhone that prevents me from using an another type of smartphone. I also use very few apps, so the iPhone is not something addictive it’s just a useful device for something’s but not a necessity or a monopoly. My cell provider offers their service to all makes of smartphones, nothing involves only on a iPhone type of service.

and even then I would argue that the privacy and secuirty concerns argument is weak as that is something the OS should handle. if Apple requires the App store for those to work then iOS is neither privacy or secure.

VLC breaks guidelines and I use it everyday.
photoshop for the longest time until recently had its own menubar and ignored macOS' menubar. I use that everyday.
Yes on VLC and it annoys me, but I don't use it much. I believe Photoshop has used the main menu bar since at least CS3 or 4, but yes that annoyed me also.

A bit of history:
MS got sued in the 90s: https://corporatefinanceinstitute.com/resources/management/microsoft-antitrust-case/
Quote:
"the Microsoft case was instrumental in creating a market environment favorable for the emergence of the biggest companies today, such as Google and Apple."

Apple has a major share of the market, especially among teens (>80% or so?). And Apple leverages this to their own advantage (they know about the whole green bubble idiocracy) and crippling competitors on this platform.

But I guess the fans will blame everyone except Apple for this.
read the gov complaint:

"And because there is no viable competitive alternative to the Windows operating system for Intel-based computers, OEMs consider it a commercial necessity to preinstall Windows on nearly all of their PCs. Both OEMs and Microsoft recognize that OEMs have no commercially viable substitute for Windows, and that they cannot preinstall Windows on their PCs without a license from Microsoft."

when you have Microsoft recognizing there is no viable competitor, that's already a huge piece of evidence that Microsoft is a monopoly.

Apple recognizes Android is a viable competitor.

" Microsoft's "Windows" operating systems are used on over 80% of Intel-based PCs, the dominant type of PC in the United States. More than 90% of new Intel-based PCs are shipped with a version of Windows pre-installed"

saying >80% teens is not really an argument.

Doesn't that already happen with computers. I think being naive is no longer a valid argument. Apple should adamantly warn people about side loading apps and I bet Apple will add legal wording in the UA so they are not responsible for whatever happens if one decides to side load.
Don't know if it will fly in the US but Vestager has already told that it will not fly in the EU. Probably, US DOJ also will take note of that.

it is.

assuming I had a choice in the beginning to choose a mom in a particular country understanding all the pros and cons beforehand.
Not my problem if you can not move. you can jump threw all the legal hoops and challenges of moving. Sell your house move. It is your choice.
Hence why if your argument is move to android as choice then you are welcome to move to another country that is not enforcing this. I hear China and Russia are great at this time of year.
