IMHO, this is actually more legitimate than most of the frivolous "anti-competition" actions against Apple. There's no real reason that NFC should be locked down on the device, and it's hard to deny that iPhone doesn't have enough market share in the US for this to harm competitors. If Apple is forced to open and companies stop allowing you to use your card with Apple Pay, the easy solution is to drop that card and get one that allows it.

If I were calling the shots at Apple, I would just open it up. At the end of the day, most iOS users aren't interested in downloading an app like Google Pay and would just keep using Apple Pay so I don't think there would really be much decline in utilization.

I think this is a much different issue than the app store issues (I think Apple should have a right to allow / disallow apps within its guidelines), but locking down a core feature like NFC that is based on an industry standards seems like a step too far.

There already is a Google Pay app in the App Store

Exactly. This is just about big companies not wanting to pay Apple anything. Nothing else at all. Nothing for us, just for them. It’s like all of these proposed regulations and /or lawsuits. Trying to see anything but a speck of light for a consumer behind the massive wall of benefits for big advertising, data mining or governmental backdooring is impossible at best.

Yeah there is no chance whatsoever I will ever in my lifetime hand my financial information over to Google.
They save vendors half cent on transaction fees but they make many multiples of that mining and selling YOUR financial and transaction data, including your phone, address, card numbers, bank info and SSN’s to anyone who pays them for it.

If they “open it up” as you say, many card issuers will switch over to their own app to save the transaction fee and pull support for apple pay in favor of their own NFC app. This will leave apple with less and less banks supporting the system and less and less fees which are necessary for Apple to charge to cover the costs of the servers and maintenance of the system. Google doesn’t charge the fee because they use your purchase data and make enough to more tha cover the costs of the servers. Apple doesn’t sell your data so they need the fee. With out the fee Apple Pay fails and there will be a horrible mishmash of bank apps that you will need to navigate to use contactless payment on the iPhone. Something no one wants. There is no problem with apple’s system. This is just an issue with banks not wanting to pay fees, which are necessary to operate the system. Fees that google has chosen to waive in favor of data mining Making apples fees seem unfair by comparison.

I believe you mean NFC. NFTs are a whole another matter that I hope Apple never gets into

If I wanted Google to have my personal and Financial data, I would have bought a Pixel.
Customers can freely CHOSE amongst many platforms based on what WE want, not what a corporation or Government compels.
I CHOSE Apple products for several reasons! Privacy and safely of my data being chief amongst them.

You're misunderstanding the issue here...

The complaint is Apple is locking out other tap to pay wallets (Google Pay, Samsung Pay, etc) on the iPhone from utilizing the same underlying hardware all the services use. There is no reason why, other than Apple saying so, that Google Pay shouldn't work the same on an iPhone as it does on any Android device.

Whether or not Apple wants to update their product to work on Android devices is solely up to them. At the moment, there is no need because they have this monopoly they're literally banking on.
What ‘monopoly’? There are dozens of competing companies and services making devices using this technology. People can freely chose devices amongst the features they want. Why should the Government force this decision on us!

What - you mean I have to buy a something off a specific vendor to use their specific features?! Gosh. That’s a new concept. Oh wait its not new. In fact - it’s completely normal. That’s how a product works. You buy it because if it’s features. Or else we have this bland situation whereby no one can offer something special for their own product.
Finally someone with common sense. Well said.

I'm not a fan of extra fees when it can be done for free..
But this appears to be Banks are upset at Apple for charging them 0.15%. Screw the banks!

Yup...and, pretty sure you don't have to use Apple Pay to buy stuff. My wife does want to bother with. And, she spends money just fine.

Come to think of it, my credit car has tap to pay. But, only for their credit card. Jerks :)

Using your logic Sony should be compelled by the Government to allow XBox Games to be installed on a PlayStation.
People can FREELY CHOSE what platforms they want to use! There is plenty of options and competition! The Government SHOULD NOT BE INVOLVED!

This could set a very dangerous precedent, the Government Forcing Apple to allow compeating companies access to their hardware would be the same as forcing Microsoft to allow Sony to install PlayStation games on an XBox.

Any company could then be forced to open their systems to anyone else and innovation and competition would cease! Why should Apple do all the R&D to develop a platform if they have to freely hand it over to Google!

Keep Government OUT of this!

Yeah I don't think people consider the domino effect of something like this.

And this is all about banks being greedy and not wanting to give a 0.15% cut to Apple in the end.
