Your "tiredness" is misplaced-- you should be angry with litigious, publicity-hungry companies, like this Tiger outfit, or SCO, or Microsoft (which is on a big campaign to enforce the bogus patents it has been amassing. This is a business seeking an advantage, and has little or nothing to do with lawyers. /lawyer :D :

Sounds like something a lawyer would say...

Tiger Direct Hacking

Not that I'm inviting that sort of heinous computer vandalism or anything, but wouldn't it me great if an outraged, highly skilled, and creating hacker had some mischeif with Tiger Direct's internet services?

BOYCOTT TIGER DIRECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NO... it wouldn't be great because that's just low... lower than Tiger Direct is being to increase traffic to their site and get potential customers with this publicity stunt.

I dunno, I did a search for "Tiger" using google and tigerdirect still comes up at the #2 spot. Mac OS X tiger is #4

tiger direct blows anyway. Just search around the internet about tigerdirect's mail-in rebate record. It seems most people never get their rebates from tigerdirect. Most of the bargain-hunting web sites list tigerdirect as a "you'll never get your rebate in a million years" kind of place.

If Tiger Direct wins than What will Apple have to do?

A universal updater that changes the name from "Tiger" to "Panther -Panh + ig"

Tiger Direct just wants attention. They may get it but they just lost my business (and I have purchased from them before). I think the whole thing is childish.

You should send them an email to let them know, I just did and I know at least one other person has. I've probably spent $5K there in the last couple of years, so hopefully they will loose more than they gain.

I just Googled on "Tiger". Tiger Direct appeared above Apple. Tiger Direct doesn't have a paw to stand on.

Even if OS X Tiger pushed Tiger Direct to the 100th page of Google results, I don't see any legitimate complaint. Since when is Google rank an unalienable right in this country?? Google simply reflects the state of the web - nothing more, nothing less.

If a new blockbuster movie called "Warriors" comes out and becomes the most popular movie of all time, should the Golden State Warriors (NBA team) sue the movie studio for pushing down their Google rank? Please.

Any half decent judge should laugh this out of the courtroom in about 5 seconds.

Wow

Hey , here's an idea...If some company happens to have your name in their name, and you were born before they started using it, you should sue them for reducing your public exposure!

i don't see how apple using Tiger has adversely affected Tiger Direct's exposure on search engines like Google...I just did a search for Tiger Direct and there wasn't a single reference to Apple of OS X within the first ten results.

i know nothing about Tiger Direct

It looks like a good cheap retail outlet for computer and electronics. That said... why should a retail outlet be patenting software? I understand thats all apple is but Apple has a completely different business model. Tiger is used for an OS name. and ... when did these other patents go through? Was it anytime around the time Jaguar came out? or after? could they have been possibly setting the stage for a future money grab? Could this not also be a strategic suit to injure apples retail sector? Giving PC retailers a little chunk of the rapidly growing apple market share?

i don't know. I am not accusing. I am just curious and I really hope this doesn't stop sales of Tiger tomorrow.

I made the mistake of ordering a few items from TigerDirect a couple of years ago for my MythTV box. That's when the catalogs started arriving, sometimes 3 a week! After a dozen or so phone calls, they finally removed my name, but since then I refuse to shop there. So this crap really doesn't surprise me from that co.

Wow-- so now you can sue based on how something impacts your Google rating? So dawns a new era...

Anyone seen this?

I think it's ridiculous how they waited until NOW to file the lawsuit.

This is idiotic. These guys own the rights to the word "Tiger"?
I should patent the word "The" and I could make millions.

Do you have ANY idea how many companies exist with the word Tiger in their names?

Further, they had a whole year to file this law suit and they wait till the launch day?

Somebody better warn the zoos, those cats are gonna need lawyers.

Maybe 'Tiger' is too specific a name.
Erm...lets think..'Feline'?..naw, too girlie.
Hey, how about 'PussyCat'? Nope, too childish.
Lets try minus 'Cat'...interesting, a new informal direction in Apple branding.

dictionary.com gives us-- PUSS·Y **Informal. A cat.**

P U S S Y

simple and straight to the point...a cat. I like it.
Now the Goggle test....loading.....ah...oh...dear...ah well back to the drawing board.

What Bullcr•p. People don't "own" the word tiger. Tiger is the name of a big cat. How stupid. One day we'll get sued for using all nouns. How ridiculous.

Yeah, next thing you know companies are going to start trademarking nouns as common as "Window" and "Word"-- or "Pages" for that matter...

Search Engine

I think the Search Engine complaint has more to do with Yahoo than Google. If you search "tiger" on Yahoo Apple comes up first and fourth. TigerDirect is in place 11, which (on default settings :see results per page) is the very first on the second page. If one of these Apple Sites had only recently come up and had bumped TigerDirect onto the second page..I think that is what they were getting at.

A Tiger is large, striped, orange and black predatory cat. After that anything with the word Tiger attached to it is cashing in on that impressive animal's repution for power and prowess. As far as I'm aware both Tiger Direct and Apple came into being several thousand years after the stripey feline was wandering around India minding it's own business.

Now if a large, stripey feline were to sue Apple, well that would be different...

If their only complaint is that they're losing rankings on a search engine, they have little to no case. They did not pay for those search engine results, and therefore are not guaranteed a top spot. It's like a sports franchise suing the New England Patriots because they were all over ESPN.com after the Super Bowl, and caused less coverage for them...

I think the best thing to do would be to blow off Tiger Direct, and not give them the attention that they wanted by pulling this stunt.

didn't George Lucas trademark the words "the, and, it"? ;)

The difference is that a trademark is issued for a particular area of use. Apple has been issued a trademark for the word 'Tiger' for use as 'computer operating system software'. Tiger Direct has no such trademark and doesn't have a leg to stand on. Likewise, Apple wouldn't be able to win a lawsuit against a company that created a computer program with the name 'Tiger' in it if it wasn't an operating system. However, Tiger Direct is claiming that their limited trademark of 'Tiger' precludes any company from using the noun in any usage, which is absolutely ridiculous.

They've already received an email from me letting them know they won't be receiving any of my money, and I know others have done the same.
