But China needs overseas tech companies in general. Pissing off the biggest one is not very smart.

It chooses. Not needs. Apple has said so.

(says it from the get go, skilled workers... with all the corporate welfare Apple gets, I'm amazed it won't help train Americans.)

I'm starting to wonder what would happen if the Chinese banned apple from manufacturing in their country, how that would impact on apple's profit margin.

lol what? Because it is.

https://www.google.com/search?q=china+no+longer+communist

Are those facts?

Are facts useless things?

(but, sure, I'll disagree too with the incorrect use of "socialistic" in what pops up most prominently in the browser... but as much as the same prominent source also states protectionism as much as it lauds how much better it is to be poor in China than in the USA (wow), now look up why ONLY China and other certain countries are allowed to engage in protectionism? This is a reason why the TPP was introduced, what with it not including China and all...)

I have no idea what those are, but not facts. Go see a dictionary for what communism is and lets not forget the censorship and freedom of speech. The edges might not be as sharp now, but below it's old good China controlled by communist party.

But none of those companies is leaving China just because Apple is having issues with the government. Most, if not all of them have gone through similar issues. They all deal with it, because it's profitable. Apple deals with it because it's profitable. The reality is, stuff like this pisses of Apple fans a heck of a lot more than it does Apple. Stuff like this probably doesn't even rise above the level of annoyance to Apple. Apple just dumped a billion dollars into China. Seriously, what's Apple going to do, leave China? Not likely.

Maybe it's time for Apple to buy an entire (large!) island and declare itself a country.

Move it's corporate headquarters there and pay zero tax.

Have all manufacturing done there away from the parasitic trash that is China.

They could build massive, state-of-the-art housing facilities the workers could live in... like their new headquarters building.

Would fit well with the HUGE hoards of international cash Apple is holding onto....

In globalization, why wouldn't there be redundant factories all over the world in the event one went down? The last time something big happened was the flood that took out all hard drive manufacturers and prices to customers skyrocketed. That didn't help any industry, company, customer, etc.

Because gentlemen , it's no longer about cheap labour and manafacturering in China .

Do you realise that apples second biggest market is now China, Not Europe.

And the growth is 3 times faster than Europe or Americas.

Apple loving money, is not about to jump ship out of its second biggest market that is growing at the fastest rate over some law suits....especially a $10k one.

lol what? Because it is.

Sure technically it's "communist", though given how many millionaires and billionaires they have, along with a huge import of Luxury goods, like the largest importer of rolls Royce automobiles .... Do you still believe China is run as a true communist state :)

Cooks obsession with China is ridiculous, and I still can't believe putting billions of dollars on his chuxing didi. First of all you don't need billions to start a taxi business in China. He should move to china for good.

Yeah. Ouch. If they were smart they'd develop a plan to continue as a software manufacturer. Being able to port their software to any device would be a stroke of genius, but I don't associate genius with Tim Cook.

When I was a kid it was "Made in Japan".
Where is the next place to go for cheap labor when China becomes too expensive?

India.

Oh yes. Cause by the time that is finished iPhones will still be super popular.

I think it is ironic that Apple says Spotify is breaking App store rules that have always existed and Spotify shouldn't get preferential treatment but Apple thinks they should get preferential treatment in China (no anti China propaganda) and India (need 30% of India manufacturing to open retail stores).

That's how you lose quality control and you don't take full advantage of any device. Pairing hardware and software has many advantages related to quality.

Indeed, but it sure as hell would be nice to fully port Apple apps to my PC that I'm tied to because of work or port iTunes to something like Roku, or even my TV.

In another news, Tim Cook bows down on his knee to Chinese gov't and willing to give up his staffs to be able to sell stuff in China.

God Apple needs a new leader. What Jobs did was absolute genius. I haven't seen much genius since his departure. I think that comes from love of your baby. Cook just loves his job.

Who wouldn't love his job? Flying and banking and giving that fake smile to people to encourage people to buy buy buy...especially with Idevices.

Don't forget about him giving a public apology over hurting the feelings of the Chinese people and their glorious leader..... err... party, I mean - sorry!

Maybe it's not worth it? Move everything to India and save on this communist ********.

Part of me wants to see apple just call it quits selling in China but I'm sure the pro's of staying there really outweigh the cons. It's just the hypocrisy of it all...
With 1/5 of the world's population, it would be expensive for Apple or any other company to ignore the Chinese market, a fact the communist elite are well aware of. By their population's sheer size, the Chinese authorities seem to believe they can afford to be somewhat arrogant in their dealings with the west, and cherry-pick the rules and regulations to fit their narrative, while in some cases blissfully ignoring the rule of law and IP conventions the rest of the civilized world endeavors to respect.

By a combination of their huge population, a still relatively low standard of living for the masses, their blatantly stealing of sophisticated western technology, and the communist's tight grip on freedom and human rights, China is well on the way to becoming the world's pre-eminent superpower, a fact the rest of the world should be very concerned about, given our hunger for cheaply-produced commodities has been fuelling that very process.

It's way past time for the rest of the world, to wake up before the balance has shifted permanently and irrevocably.
