How rapid is "rapid"?

Phazer

You think 6 months is enough time to collect all of that data, analyze everything, and rewrite a virtual intelligence so that it always knows what millions of different people mean?

Rapid is within two or three generations of a product but obviously not overnight.

You could always use the alternative to Siri, you know, the one that has perfected everything and is in widespread use already. The one that doesn't exist yet because this is Apple pioneering a new field of person to computer interaction.

I don't pay much attention to the advertising, but anyone who thinks that Apple had developed and fully realized a phone with artificial intelligence is being unrealistic. Through using Siri you're helping them make Siri into something that is closer to what everyone wants, and that's a step in the right direction.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9B179 Safari/7534.48.3)

The fact that most of you can't step back and look at your argument here is amusing and sad at the same time. Apple claims Siri is the number 1 reason to buy the 4s, they have many commercials showing how great it works. So when that is brought into question the replay is "it's beta duh, are you dumb? It says so on their site".

That argument is typical of a 10 year old.

Exactly. And to the idiots talking about google (which is a company I can't stand) being in perpetual beta - this is true but how much did you pay for your gmail and gchat?

People don't want to work for money anymore. Siri stop ruining lives.

Of course they talk themselves up in ads. They are a company who is in it to make some money. They aren't the only company who does it either. This reminds me of that iPad ad where they shopped the Star Trek image and said something like 'hands down the best image quality' and then actually watching Star Trek on an iPad was hilariously bad and had about a third of the screen chopped off and all squashed or letterboxed in landscape view.

People should know about advertising, though.

In the tech/innovative stuff world, people have no parameters to say if that ad is overrating the product or it's just as innovative as they say. It's different to an ad which says that Red Bull gives you wings. It's pretty clear that a gasified drink can't make anyone create wings.

Whatever happened to earning an honest living??

Seriously, this fits in with Weird Al's song "I'm Gonna Sue" perfectly. Americans have become stereotypically idiots who sue (which is only accurate for a few).

Also, nice avatar!

This lawsuit has caused my AAPL to go all the way down to over $550 per share.

The only time Siri doesn't understand me is when I try to talk to her over bluetooth. Lawsuit troll.

I wouldn't call Siri a beta since Apple made it the only reason to get a 4S besides some useless performance boosts. I don't like how companies just call stuff "beta" so they don't get in trouble. Google does this a lot.

But why do you hate Google so much? I just hate the Droid and their Chrome campaign.

You're lucky. It rarely understands me, especially when I ask it what the capital of Assyria is.

Another "only in America" moment. Imagining for a second that the plaintiff is correct and that Apple has been making exaggerations, why can someone sue for damages based on a television advert?

Look at the UK outcome - person complains to ASA, ASA bans advert from being aired. There should be no damages for anyone because no one was hurt, physically or materially.

An advert is not a contract.

US citizens should be proud that anyone can easily sue anyone - particularly companies - because he or she thinks anyway harmed by some ad, a defective product or a sub-standard service provided by someone. This makes US having higher standards in terms of medications, food, electronics, clothes and so on. Consumers have a big power and eventually can break an entire company because of bad/unfair services.

I expect someday seeing similar attitude from brazilian consumers.

Apple has set the precedence for hyping products via wild claims, to new heights.

Leading the way and setting an example of suing others, the tables are now turned.

Yet Apple's massive amount of cash assures their legal team will be able to manipulate the case and prevail.

It's not about what's fair, honest and just.

It's about Apple cultivating and refining their ability to control all things within their own reality sphere.

Remember it's only a game, one in which Apple amasses all the money...

The Apple followers cheer, join in on the celebration and live happily ever after :D

But has Apple made even a penny by suing anyone? I don't understand how the two relate

My biggest Siri complaint is when she says, "I don't know that, would you like me to search the web for that?"

"Yes!!!!" of course I do, I want the answer to my question and you didn't know it, go find it! PLEASE!

Give me a checkbox to say "please always search the web for me".

Gary

Yeah, there are some strides to be made. When I say "Ask my wife when she will be home" I want Siri to text "When will you be home?" Instead, Siri suggests a text of "when she will be home" with no punctuation.

Given the amount of thought they put into silly questions (meaning of life, etc) I'm fairly surprised that these issues made it through. Of course, as everyone on this thread is yelling: it's a Beta, and will only get better.

I'm suing Bounty because it did NOT pick up my greasy mess any quicker than the store bought brand. Their product did not work as advertised.

I'm also suing Oxi-Clean because my clothes do not look like Billy Mays shirts (may be rest in peace).

If Apple can be sued for Siri commercials, how about car companies for their commercials? This can set a bad precedent.

Let the market sort this out. If enough people are unhappy, people will buy less, Apple is punished. Or are you forced to buy an Apple product?

Down with Apple

That's right!!!! Take down the corporate giant that is Apple. How dare they market one of their products to try and entice you to buy it. I did something similar when I filed suit against Keebler when I found out that Elves didn't really make my cookies. Bastards!!!

The madness has to stop! These companies can't keep deceiving people with their lies and evil tactics.

But has Apple made even a penny by suing anyone? I don't understand how the two relate

It's certainly trying to, either directly (getting paid for android phone sales) or indirectly (getting competing products banned).

Apple sells the crap out of SIRI and it does not peform as depicted in the advertisements. Its not enough to say its beta. If it works in the ads it should work in real life.

I hope the guy wins.

Apple can't sit on the fence. If it's beta, where are the instructions to the beta testers to submit defects? And if it's beta, stop selling it like it's the second coming of the mouse.

Watch the ads. This is the latest one that seems to be hot on the rotation. Not once do they mention it's Beta software, unless it's some small print that I missed.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UpmQN55q2g

Others are the same.

So good for him for suing. Companies should think twice before marketing beta software as a major feature. Sometimes it's not about money...it's about business ethics. If someone sold you software that was half baked and led you to believe it was production ready, wouldn't you be pissed?

I'm not that happy with my 4s. It has hardware issues with the sound, firmware issues with calls (finally fixed with 5.1) and quite frankly, Siri is only good for dictation and setting reminders.

And for all the folks bashing him for suing, keep in mind that he will come out short on this regardless. He'll have lost time and money, or just time. And the financial payoff won't be that great.

It's really simple. Apple commercials are advertising Beta version of Siri and they grossly misrepresent how well/poor Beta version of Siri works. The guy is suing Apple for false advertising of Beta version of Siri. Are you saying that as long as the software is in beta, the company can lie about its performance any way it wants?

WHERE has it lied??

- Does Siri not create a calendar appointment for you when you ask it to?
- Does it not set an alarm for you?
- Does it not tell you stock prices?
- Does it not write and send a text message for you?
- Does it not take down notes?
- Does it not set reminders and remind you of an event?
- Does it not play a music you request it to play?

Apple has advertised all of this, and, in its own words clearly mentioned the following in writing in its website (alongside the previous disclaimer I showed you):

"However, Siri is designed to recognize the specific accents and dialects of the supported countries listed above. Since every language has its own accents and dialects, the accuracy rate will be higher for native speakers."

All of these tasks are performed at the first command.

So which one of these is a "lie"? Which one of these is "false advertising"? Which one of these is a "gross misinterpretation" of the product Apple is actually shipping?

If you want to come to an Apple related website and troll your way around here, that's one thing you could do, but you suggesting in all seriousness that all of the above are just blatant 'lies', through which Apple is managing to deceive millions of satisfied customers since October 2011, is simply ignorant IMO.

Earlier this month, Apple and Vodafone won a case in the United Kingdom in which a member of the public complained that Apple's iPhone 4S advertising in the country was misleading for its depictions of location-based services that are only available in the United States at the present time. The Advertising Standards Authority ruled in Apple's favor when it determined that Apple's UK ads did not depict Siri integration with the Maps application (a U.S.-only feature for the time being) and that Siri's ability to access a user's local weather in the UK was sufficient to satisfy Apple's claims that it can use location information to provide personal assistance.

Personal assistance using local weather info, a worthy upgrade

Siri for UK users is very feature poor, had it turned off on my 4S more or less since day one.
