Reminds me of new cars with solid-state buttons, terrible decision, some cars brands even reversed the decision
You mush be referring to the capacitive touch buttons on some cars. Those are a poor choice for a car interface because you can’t find them buy touch and they don’t have any haptic feedback.

These buttons will likely still look and feel like buttons just like the home button did when it changed to solid-state.

I understand your concern, but I have been using Lysol disinfectant wipes #ad on all my devices -- Mac, iPhone, iPad -- for over a decade. There has never been any damage or discoloration caused by this. Just plain sterile goodness.

But it would be even more convenient if I can just throw my phone in the dishwasher or the laundry. 🤔
You don’t want to use solvents like alcohol or ammonia on phones, but Lysol wipes do not use solvents for the disinfecting so they should be fine.

The biggest problem with that is the type of charger that they have. Apple uses a proprietary charger system that not one car manufacturer supports. Why? Because they have to be prepared in case you have an android phone. Even at Cadillac which has marketing data that shows that 97% of Cadillac owners have iPhones, we still don’t get the Apple charging system. And of course the industry standard system is terrible. I am looking at buying a new GM full size SUV. I have settled on the GMC. It’s ungodly expensive at this point in time. But it next to impossible to get all the parts and that makes it so hard to build new vehicles. But as a part of the manufacturing process ,not being able to get all of the parts needed to build it as designed. In my case they can’t supply the wireless charging system. I really don’t care. I have noted that I can add a MagSafe charger in the place where the wireless charger would be and charge using the Apple charger system.
IPhones will work just fine with generic Qi chargers. MagSafe is a specialized Qi charger that uses magnets to get a better alignment of the charging coils. If your car has a standard Qi charger, your iPhone will work just fine. You just have to manually align it on the pad. You could also get a MagSafe and plug it into the USB ports on your car and charge that way. No problems there.

I really hope this rumor is wrong. If they are going to remove the buttons and add touch ‘buttons’, go the whole hog and make them part of the front screen. Don’t mess around with ergonomically incorrectly placed buttons (ever picked up the phone and either turned it or, worse, taken a screen shot and I know there are ways to avoid this but it is all a pain). Consider the phone a sheet of glass with all its controls on the front (wait, wasn’t that Jony Ives idea who everyone wants to disparage these days). Skeuomorphic controls are almost as bad as skeuomorphic icons.

This sounds dreadful. Yet the masses will cheer the de-contenting of the phone. Removing high-quality mechanical components and losing the quality feel of real buttons to replace them with cheap, inefficient, unreliable haptics will further the quality decline of iPhone in the service of increasing corporate profit margins.

“..would eliminate moving parts that can wear out or break over time.”

Lol, I never had a power or volume button wear out from the very 1st iPhone I had to the 14 Pro I have now.
They’ve been excellent on most phones but the sleep/wake button on the iPhone 4 failed pretty often compared to any other iPhone. I replaced quite a few of those. They would become stuck in the down position due to a cable that would lose the contact pad that the button clicked down on.

Apple didn’t consider it a defect and charged you to replace the whole phone. After replacing a lot of these I started using the AssistiveTouch onscreen button to decrease wear on my own iPhone 4, but one day I clicked the physical button and it went down and stayed down.

I assume they redesigned the cable or contact pad on the 4S or 5.

I meant it actually and that's the reason. I wipe the iPhone with disinfectant frequently. But I'd like to wash it like I'd my Apple Watch. I know the phone is water resistant but as I understand it right now that's more for accidents than deliberate immersion. Rather than wiping it carefully whenever I come back home each day it would be more convenient to just put it right under the faucet and wash it with soap.
I wash my phone with soap and water everyday for the past six months, works perfectly fine. Just remember to allow it to air dry for a few hours before charging and I throughly get any water out from the openings. This process that’s all but 30 seconds to a minute.

The solid state home button on the iPhone 8 is great - works first time every time, and gives feedback that is close enough to a mechanical button that the switchover wasn’t any sort of problem. Yes, you can tell it’s different, but there’s no need to perfectly mimic the feel of a mechanical switch, in this case.

I foresee a problem, though, with solid-state “switches” for the side buttons: many (most?) cases, including Apple’s cases, cover those buttons with silicone, or metal, which transmits pressure through to the button, but does not transfer the electrical effects of a fingertip, so a capacitive touch “button” would either need to be completely uncovered (not just a cutout for the button but space around it for a finger to get down to that level), or they need to come up with some method of transferring the capacitive touch effects to the surface of the ”extension button” on the case.

As well, I often walk around with my phone in my hand and my thumb indexed onto the volume up/down buttons by feel, ready to press either one at my whim, to change the volume. If they end up with buttons that you can’t touch without triggering, it’s going to be a problem.

LOL. And what do you do when iOS screws itself up and you need to force reboot or go to recovery mode? Apple cannot even make a completely stable iOS for existing devices, and now they want to make it harder to troubleshoot. Great move to push people into buying new phones more often, I guess.

Roflmao.

Spoken like someone whom doesn’t know about old DLL hell with legacy Windows apps still used in corporations today. Doesn’t know the need to use eventvwr to view Bose system and application errors nor ever used RegEdit in windowsOS to cleanly remove apps properly or to find and adjust entries to reset apps like Excel without the need to uninstall and reinstalling (when needed and know when those are). Who’s never had to think outside of the box to get critical 3rd party apps going. nor Ever needed to use Safe Mode with/without networking nor powershell or having to use a bootUSb to repair kernel in windows or recovery mode on nvme partition (speaking of with to recreate partitions and volumes).

And Apple cannot build a stable os?!! They’ve had THE most stable Unix/desktop in oS with all the features it’s had and THE most stable smartphone is in history thus far!!

Enjoy the crispy snacks and dig’em. 🐸

Apple solved this with an imbedded ring around the TouchID button in the 5S and it’s hidden in the 8 and SE2/3.

Doesn’t activate until such rich and capacitive area are both trigged.

Besides the only thin that’ll trigger while locked using fingers to feel is ringer volume or music playback volume.

Yet while knowing this, I live in an analog world and I’m human so some buttons are just needed.

Buttons are great. Leave them alone. Haptics instead of buttons are a solution to a problem that doesn’t need to exist.
Much like cars going to touch screens for an interface, they are difficult to use when driving and don't have the simple tactile click for response. I really hate that and loathe buying a new car for that reason. Likewise, a fully touch phone is another reason to not get an iPhone. The lack of SIM on the 14 was bad enough to start (I know they have them outside of the US)
