The picture quality and low light sensitivity of iPhone cameras has not improved since iPhone 5 which uses a 5MP sensor. The only improvements are panoramic mode, high speed shot, true tone. But they are not due to the SONY image sensors Apple used.
No, the 10-megapixel sensor would provide the better image. Each pixel would be bigger on the sensor, so allowing more photons in. The more photons, the more accurately each pixel is recreated.
The chorus of "I don't want 4k video/21-megapixels/optical zoom on my iPhone" reminds me of all the folks who just a few months ago were saying "I don't want a bigger screen/phablet/jumbo iPhone."
Bottom line: If Apple makes it for us, we'll want it.![]()
nope, in 7 or even 7s, aand only in plus version ;-)
"Apple supplier Sony" - is that all they are now, Apple suppliers ? Methinks this chip will be available to more than just Apple!
Yep. 4K video will definitely fix the limited storage problem.

I think if they had a 21 megapixel camera it would definitely be a 6s.
afaik the iPhone 5 uses a 1/3.2" 8MP sensor - 1.4micron pixels
the 5s increased sensorsize while keeping the same Mp count to 1/3" resulting in bigger pixels and thus better low light performance

It's not known exactly which sensor is used in the current iPhone and iPad, but camera experts have speculated that the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus use the Sony ISX014 sensor, an 8-megapixel sensor that Sony first introduced in October of 2012.
That assumes that noise is some sort inaccuracy, which only some of it is.4 inaccurate figures averaged is not as good as one accurate figure.
Btw, this chip will be on the iPhone 6s
There are a few things everyone should know before talking about image sensors (especially in smartphones)
1. More Megapixels in smartphones (due to a very small pixel pitch) actually means a worse SNR (signal to noise ratio) than less megapixels, resulting in an overall worse image. This is due to wiring and other stuff "getting in the way" of the photons (And this can NOT be corrected by Downscaling)
The Xperia line of phones uses 21MP sensor, but whenever mentioned here it is quickly pointed out that Sony sensors are inferior to the sensor used in iPhone. I wonder what this means about the world.
Can somebody explain why nobody is pointing out the iPhone 6 (and 6+) cameras already use on-sensor PD AF (as this new Sony sensor does) and also offers one-shot HDR (as this new sensor does). These were touted as the two technical headline features of the new camera in the iPhone 6 models back in September and at that time, at least the on-sensor PD AF, were a first for phone cameras.

No. That's how Macrumors has worded the article. Sony still makes the finest video and other equipment on the planet.
4K HDR video --> drool.
non-issue. haven't thought about that once on my 6.

Looking forward to Apple adding 2 and 3 year old tech to the new iPhones in a few years.
Where were you 10 years ago, when this was actually a valid point, but all the P&S manufacturers were going on their megapixel war. With modern sensor tech, its not this simple anymore, and not necessarily true. High MPx sensors can have fine SNR, DR etc.

Apple does not typically use high-megapixel sensors in its iPhone or iPad...
Btw, this chip will be on the iPhone 6s
Megapixels matter far less to me than sensor size, and light sensitivity.
Say hello to 10-20mb image file sizes!![]()

Untrue, and the iPhone 5 uses an 8MP camera, the same as its predecessor the 4S.
Eh, for me, it's more like "If I want it, Apple won't make it." I'm totally not of the kind of people they cater to. I don't care about the iPhone, I want better Boot Camp support for FreeBSD, I really want a modular Mac mini with iMac specs for whenever I replace this Mac Pro, I want Rosetta back, and I don't want any soldered-on RAM
Still dissapointed that the iP6 didn't at least bump the camera to 12x mega pixels. Yes it's better than before, but still takes crappy low-light and blurry moving object photos.
Guessing it'll get the 12 mega pixel treatment with next year's spec-bumped iP6S.
Can't help but think that Apple is falling way behind the competition as far as phone camera's are concerned.
