I think this rumor could very possibly be true given that they named their latest iPad, "Air". The reason I think this is because of they following:

Mac mini / iPad mini
MacBook Air / iPad Air
MacBook Pro / iPad Pro

Yeah and I'm trying to tell you it's called iPad Air to sell more, that is the only reason. Not because there is an iPad 'Pro' in development (there likely isn't). Why call it iPad Air instead of iPad 5? Because iPad 5 tells the vast majority of people who don't know what changes it has, that it is simply the next iteration, and more powerful like every upgrade. The iPad Air tells people it has been drastically changed with respect to size and weight, and that name alone will draw far more attention to it, having people realize that these changes were made, in turn selling far more units because of it. Same reason the iPad Mini went to iPad Mini with retina display as opposed to iPad Mini 2. Even if Apple were stupid enough to produce a 12.9" tablet and call it iPad 'Pro' the iPad Air was not named that because of it, it was named that for reasons I've stated.
The name could be for many reasons. I definitely think differentiation is one of them -- from the iPad 2, mini and prior generations. It also as you said conveys meaning about the update. And it follows their sort of familiar naming scheme.
The main reason Apple wouldn't produce a 12.9" tablet and call it iPad 'Pro' is because 99% of purchases of iOS devices aren't professionals needing it for that purpose. It wouldn't sell many units AT ALL. Also because what would they put in it that would support the needed computing power? The A15? Oh wait. The next chip is the A8 and it will be marginally better than the A7, and it will be in all new devices in 2014.

I'd love for someone to do a schematic based off the proportions of the iPad Air and make a 12.9" iPad mockup so people could print it out (if it could even fit on a piece of paper) and see how ridiculous it looks (and keep in mind it would weigh every bit of 1.6-2lb.
Just because "Pro" is in the name doesn't mean it's for professionals. It's like the MacBook Pro. It means it's better (or more powerful) as opposed to meaning it's for professionals.

Regarding the needed computing power:

1. The A7 is already on par with the Cortex A15. And the changes from A6 to A7 were substantial and the same could be true for the A8.

2. It's not CPU power, but GPU power which will need to increase due to the larger (3072x2304) resolution. This is now possible due to the Rogue series of PowerVR graphics.

3. I can imagine it hitting ~800g. I'd definitely buy one though because portability isn't important for me at all.

This image on the second link you posted shows that the sensor is behind the LCD:

Yeah, I was wrong. I meant to bring that up, but it slipped me by while I was busy trying to crunch numbers and compare models of things to figure out how much the digitizer weighed.

What the heck is a really wild conservative guess?

It's a number almost entirely pulled out of my ass for the sake of conversation.

The two heaviest components of any modern tablet are the battery and the glass. A bigger battery is going to obviously lead to more weight. By being conservative, I assumed that the larger battery only accounted for half the added weight between the Tab and Note. It was my attempt at a fair guess without having much to go on.

That's probably adding too much, really, because the digitizer itself is only a quarter of a millimeter thick piece of glass. Any substantial weight would have to be added by the controller, which probably doesn't weigh much itself.

Except that Mac Mini isn't a notebook, so your post makes little sense.

Maybe he meant iPod Mini.... wait... :D

You jumped from a Mac to a MacBook. What about the Mac Pro? Or the Mac Air? Erm, wait, I mean...

Mostly Right but,

Mac Mini, iMac, Mac Pro

Macbook Air 11, Macbook Pro 13, Macbook Pro 15

iPad Mini, iPad Air, iPad Pro

iPhone 5c, Iphone 5s, iPhone Pro/6 (4.7")

I wonder if they start to drop the numbers:

MacBook Air - 12" slimline aluminium design in silver
MacBook Colour - 14" colour polycarbonate
MacBook Pro - 16" aluminum design in black

iPhone Air - 4" slimline aluminium design
iPhone Colour - 4" colour polycarbonate
iPhone Pro - 4.7" all new design

Musicians will be all over this. Hello proper sheet music creation.

This is it!

My church has had a young / professional organist play several times who used his iPad for the organ music. A normal iPad is simply too small.

Musicians will love a bigger iPad!

Message to Tim Cook

Stop expanding the line up. Focus your efforts on perfecting what you have out now.

Easy to do when you have 70% market share with everyone else playing catchup. Not a good idea when your market share is slipping because your stuck in the same mind set while your competitors and your customers have moved to new ideas. People wanted a smaller iPad, now the Mini is the bestselling iPad. People want a larger iPhone and I suspect it will prove to be a big seller. Everyone said a gold iPhone would be tacky but you can't get one anywhere it's so popular.

In the tech world if you don't move forward you're moving backwards. Standing still is not an option in the tech world. Ask Palm, Blackberry, Nokia, etc. 5 years ago Samsung was nowhere now their everywhere. Apple simply cannot afford to bypass paying customers just to protect some outdated principal. It's not like they make hundreds of products. They do focus but that doesn't mean they have to stand still.

I don't think any company introduces products to satisfy a need for order in their product naming scheme.

It might sound logical looking at the names, but a naming scheme is no indication that this will happen.

I couldn't agree more. If you don't listen to your audience they will simply go elsewhere. I think it's important to keep updating your product, but releasing more of the same thing even when it's just a slight boost isn't necessarily moving forward. It's getting away with the minimum that people will tolerate. It would be nice to see fewer models, but with more options...thats all. Focus on what you have available and perfect it.

Glad to see I'm not the only one to believe this screen has nothing to do with an iPad but are just the new MacBook Air retina display ...

I would kill for a 12" MBA retina :D

I sure hope Apple is hearing us... LOUD and CLEAR!

(There are many of us who feel that way)

I could see a certain logic to Apple merging the 11.6" and 13.3" MBA's into one model to increase economies of scale and position it as a more affordable consumer orientated laptop maybe with a 12.5" screen.

Alternatively they may just want to bump up the screen size of the current models from 11.6" to 12" and from 13.3" to 14" to better differentiate them from the iPad.

If the rumor is correct, it'll most likely be a 12" screen since the rumored resolution is 2304 x 1440 and at 12" the DPI would roughly be equal to that of the current rMBP. If Apple can reduce the amount of bezel, it could probably be similar to the current 11.6" size.

An 12" iPad does not make sense when the 17" Macbook Pro was discontinued with the reason that it was too big and to expensive for the masses liking.

Non sequitur. A 12.9" iPad would still be a lot lighter than the lightest MacBook Air.

I think he means for composers

There are many more piano players, and music players in general, than composers. Being able to get rid of sheet music in paper form seems a huge advantage. Last piano concert I went to, a bit of wind came up in the room, and someone _jumped_ to the piano holding the sheets that were starting to be blown away (some air conditioning turned itself on apparently).

Do you really think Apple has to "compete" with Surface ?

Well, with the huge success of the Surface Apple _has_ to compete with it, or they will be DOOMED. :D

----------

The fact that both the S4 and Tab have the word "SAMSUNG" written on the front of the device is a bit of a giveaway unless of course you're blind.

And that's stupid. You are assuming that everyone knows that Apple makes iPhones and iPads and Samsung doesn't. They don't. People will easily think they are buying an iPhone made by Samsung, or an iPad made by Samsung. Especially with the iPad, many people have no idea what a "tablet" is. To them they are all iPads.

Stop beating the dead horse, literally...

I really hope I will never, ever meet anyone who is literally beating a dead horse.

Honestly if anyone is that stupid they deserve to be deceived.

There could be people speaking about Samsung "iPad" referring to an android tablet, for sure, but everyone knows about Apple iPad as "the original".

Too right! Me and my music colleagues conducting orchestras, choirs and bands are really hoping for a larger "iPad Pro" - the sooner the better. Got the top model iPad Air - it is a fantastic device, but it is too small to use in concerts etc. :(

Filed under: There's not really that much consistency in Apple's naming strategy. Not saying it's not going to happen, but you're just seeing what you want to see.

Connect the spaces between iPad Air, __________, MacBook Air. Essentially there's a slight gap between iPad's and MacBook's in terms "tablet" and "laptop". Could Apple be putting a toe in the water in terms of a tablet/notebook convertible?

I had to go deep in the archive for this one on patentlyapple, but finally managed to find this. http://www.patentlyapple.com/patently-apple/2013/04/finally-apple-reveals-their-hybrid-notebook-tablet-details.html Its from back in April, but its my thought on what this 13" display means to the future of Apple products.

They could, but Apple has a problem with making devices that don't have a clear cut demographic.

The biggest problem for Apple is going to be the OS. Will it run OSX or iOS? There won't be a new hybrid version any time soon, and truthfully if there is it'll lean more toward iOS's archaic simplicity which is already agonizing to use on anything larger than an iPhone.
