I've got big manly hands....so i could handle a bigger screen. Heh heh heh. Actually...my 40 yr old eyes would like a bigger screen too. :)

Sadly, I know what you mean about 40 yr old eyes. I had to increase the font size on my wife's iPhone ... under the Accessibility tab!:(

I sometimes wonder how some peoples brain work after they spit such crap out.

It's a great design and great design never gets boring.
Well, there is the problem. Define boring. I agree with you that the design of the iPhone 4(S) is great and nice, but I do also agree that it's getting boring if you have had the iPhone 4 for 16 months now (some even 17 months).

It's just that people want something new.

If you are used to something, something becomes boring. If something becomes boring, you want something new.

A lot of iPhone 4 owners have had the device for almost 1,5 years now and they get used to it. Someone who is coming from the iPhone 3GS to the iPhone 4S, will obviously (hopefully) love the design because he's not used to it.

a smartphone is partly "fashion" it needs to look good (thats y i dont buy an nokia bc they look like stupid plastic toys) but having owned the iPhone 4 for nearly 2 years is getting boring. Its like owning the same clothes for too long. I still use my mid 2009 mbp bc im waiting for a redesign. The current look is "boring" after all those years

Edit: the person above said it better

Apple likes their aspect ratio and resolution combination. This is because every single iPhone sold can use apps off the App Store knowing the app is optimized for (depending on their phone) either 960x640, or exactly half of that, ensuring that scaling still looks good. This commitment to a strict resolution and aspect ratio combo makes sense to me, as it's one of Android's largest issues.. Apps made for iPhone look that way. Apps made for Android may look good on one device, but on another, awkward scaling must occur and fonts and images may appear stretched or compressed.

My point is - Apple will not stray from their commitment to a resolution/aspect ratio standard, unless they double their pixels like the difference between 3Gs and 4, but I don't see that happening yet. And, Apple has now added a new criteria to be committed to: screens above 300 DPI. With these combinations of factors, I can't see a screen larger than 3.8".

A 4 inch screen would be nice as long the size of the phone does not change.

Seems perfect size already.

In the past, I think the Android makers had a meeting that went like this...

Hmm, we can't cram all the components into such a small form factor as Apple, and still control cost... I know, let's put it in a big chassis and make the screen bigger and tell people it's better.

-----------------

Please, I want a small phone. The iPhone fits perfect in my jean pocket. I see all these people with big 1990 size Android phones saying how great they are... I want it small, small, small...

I'll watch movies on my iPad..

If they do make the iPhone bigger, I hope they make an iPhone nano.

+0,5" will not make it any more comfy. Less battery life, probably bigger device is all you get.
A phone can´t be a tablet.

thats a silly approach tho. stuff cant stay the same forever just to secure that itll work on every older device. how does it work on android btw serious question. I know people using the same apps on diff screen sizes and i see no difference.

they could just make some apps "5 only" like they do with the HD iPad apps

Well as long as 70% of the secret android fans here think its perfect, I'm ready to throw out Steve Job's opinion. Seriously how can any one think they could have a more informed idea of what would be perfect than someone who eats, sleeps, and breathes the iPhone? Now make that someone Steve Jobs. Its almost laughable.

Apple innovates and then leads, they don't follow. If they thought a 4" screen was best, the original iPhone would have had one. I hate to disappoint the majority of you, but the iPhone will never have a bigger screen. It may have a pico projector or some star trek hologram doohickey, but it won't ever have a bigger LCD screen!

However, we all know absolutes are not absolute, so should Apples top management face some horrible group accident where they all, God forbid, perish and an entirely new group is brought in, and that entirely new group consists of only people that have never heard of Steve Jobs. Then in turn, if this new group releases a 4" iPhone, I will eschew technology all together and move into the woods. :apple:

lol, crazy people

The iPhone is a combination of a lot of things, Job could have easily liked 4" screens but settled at 3.5" so that the overall phone could be the size he felt was perfect. Fact is you have no idea either way, but you have gone off the reservation with your assertion that 3.5 absolutely has to be the most perfect screen size for all eternity now since it was the size they chose on the original iPhone.

i imagine you will jump off a bridge when the iPhone 5 that Steve was no doubt very much involved in designing, ends up with the 4" screen that he wanted

FYI he was just Human

Don't increase phone size

Don't make the phone bigger. I carry my phone in my pants pocket and bigger would be a problem. I like the 4S size just fine.

I said from day one that the screen on the iPhone and iPod Touch needed to be bigger (rumors were constantly flowing about SMALLER screens), but I guess it took competition from Samsung to actually finally get Apple to see the darn thing is too small to comfortably work with, especially for people with large hands. 4.5" would be better yet.

By your logic all other 'smartphones' didn't even have chance to become boring.

That doesn't compute, man. If i had Mustang for 40 years does it get boring? If it's great then it's great - there is no second option.

that makes no sense. Different thing, it has a nostalgic "cool factor"

Thats like saying my nokia 5110 which i found badass and GREAT for having snake back in the day is still great which it most definitly isnt

what? Makes no sense either. If the iPhone gets an 4 inch screen. Id still find it boring within 2 years. Its just cuz its getting ooooold having the same thing for too long. Is that so hard to understand? If i were to buy a galaxy nexus tmrw with a 4.6 screen and samsung would release a 4.6 with the same design in 2 years it would be boring just as much

but anyway, more than twice as many people in the poll r in favor for a bigger screen so whatever

As always. Someone is trying to fix what's not broken. If you measure my screen on my Nexus S 4g it is close to 4" but if you measure the viewable screen it's about 3.6. iPhones viewable screen is actually 3.5

Some guys seem to want to compensate so they want bigger screens because they have nothing else taking up pocket space....LMAO :D

My girlfriend says 3 and a half inches is perfect!

Which is your opinion. If you look at that poll, and the large number of respondents (and this isn't the first poll of it's kind), it's largely in the 70 percentile that people want a bigger screen. It's also become the golden standard, and neither of those things can be ignored by even Apple.

Actually, I'd call the iPhone the "gold standard", and as you know, no 4" screen on that! By the way, when was the last time Apple took a poll to see what we care about? They innovate, then lead. They do NOT poll. Sorry everyone but as an American, I have no problem telling you that American consumers are dumb.

I know Apple likes to create things we didn't know we wanted, but that's a motto they use in developing new products. When it comes to existing products, they might not always be first, but they always deliver in time.

Its WAY more than a motto to me at least. I may be the only one. As far as existing products... Mac, iPhone, iPad... seems like a pattern to me. Innovate, and lead.

I liken it to Blu-Ray. Still not there, but you don't see the masses demanding it. (It's largely been ignored as a format, period.) Now say Blu-Ray had caught fire like the DVD did, and everyone in the world was running out and loading up on players and media, you know Apple would have invested in the licensing. It never happened, and it won't happen. In this example, the user can at least use an external drive if they choose to. In the event of phone, that's not an option.

LOL I liken the 4" screen to the Blu-Ray debate as well. If you did a poll on mac rumors, 70% of people would want it and would never get it.

Demand + need They also paid witness to a huge internet spanking when the iPhone 4S did not have a larger screen. They got bent over and spanked by not just the tech news sites, but by the people. The 4S is a great seller, but it's also been a device attracting new users. This is the first time people weren't flocking for early upgrades. Last year, the early upgrade was so in demand, AT&T revised their policy because of that demand This year, not any outcry for it, and we didn't get early upgrades. Those things are telling. It shows most people are willing to wait for the next model. Siri wasn't a big enough draw for existing owners, because they want a new design and screen. So says all the polls.

Again with the polls no one has ever seen. Um, jump on a windows site, Apple gets spanked on the internet daily, but they don't run around trying to please everyone. They just make a better product and you can buy it or not. Its interesting how you describe the pre orders for the iPhone 4S, funny, I thought it was the best selling iPhone of all time, and internationally (where all the people are) is through the roof! Yeah, that 4" screen is a must have.

Except there absolutely were prototypes floating around with the 4" screen. If Apple were so dead set against the idea, they wouldn't be toying with it in their labs. The level of detail that leaked on the iPhone 5 was too concrete.

Would it surprise you to find out there are probably 3", 5", and every quarter inch in between screens used as prototypes as well? Some guy with too much time and money built an actual physical (non-working) prototype based on the rumor you mention. I'm thinking Apple probably sprung for more than a few prototypes. Maybe you thought Steve and Jonny were sitting around one day and thought, yeah, 3.5 inches, not 3 or 4, but 3.5 exactly. Nah, we don't even need to see anything else, lets build it. LOL Maybe they should have done a poll!

No offense but I'd hardly call people who can afford both an iPhone and a $500 iPad "plebs" (aka commoners).

I wouldn't mind a 4" iPhone and am kind of surprised to see so many people hating on that idea...

They're only hating it because they have the 4s and wouldn't be able to upgrade.
When an iPhone with a larger screen comes out we'll see remarks like;
OMG it beautiful.
Unreal, apple why did you wait so long?
where's the best place to sell my 4s?
Why did I waste the upgrade on the 4s?

Look Samsung copied apple by increasing the screen size of their xxxxxx phone.

I don't wear skinny jeans so a larger phone wouldn't be an issue. YMMV
