having owned the iPhone 4 for nearly 2 years is getting boring.
lol, crazy people
The iPhone is a combination of a lot of things, Job could have easily liked 4" screens but settled at 3.5" so that the overall phone could be the size he felt was perfect. Fact is you have no idea either way, but you have gone off the reservation with your assertion that 3.5 absolutely has to be the most perfect screen size for all eternity now since it was the size they chose on the original iPhone.
i imagine you will jump off a bridge when the iPhone 5 that Steve was no doubt very much involved in designing, ends up with the 4" screen that he wanted
FYI he was just Human
Why not make the 4' display 1024x768?
This way all iPad apps are already "iPhone 5" compatible, and I think (not sure) that at this size it would still be retina?

Well, there is the problem. Define boring. I agree with you that the design of the iPhone 4(S) is great and nice, but I do also agree that it's getting boring if you have had the iPhone 4 for 16 months now (some even 17 months).
It's just that people want something new.
If you are used to something, something becomes boring. If something becomes boring, you want something new.
A lot of iPhone 4 owners have had the device for almost 1,5 years now and they get used to it. Someone who is coming from the iPhone 3GS to the iPhone 4S, will obviously (hopefully) love the design because he's not used to it.
Its definitely time for a bigger screen. 4" or better is 2011+. Apple has to realized that it is not 2007 anymore. We practically use our phones are everything now, especially for entertainment purposes. Netflix on a 3.5" isn't an enjoyable experiences, whatsoever.
Phones with 4" screens are huge! Difficult to fit in your pocket! They do look cool but aren't practical unless you don't carry them in your pocket.
i wonder what kind of pants some people wear .... if 4 aint fittin, u puttin it wrong
My this thread is filled with fear based comments. The dynamic is very interesting. Radically obsessed with one handed operation, the iFans seem to have tunnel vision. I thought that Apple users were progressive open minded people. Wow, was I wrong.
4" screen is just too big
the current screen is perfect.
fits perfect into the pocket
the S2 iv held it, played with it... to bulky to much to carry around.
Huh... Are you sure your not defining ignorance?
Its almost like people don't know their unsurpassed consumption and short attention spans are robbing our culture of its craftsmanship.
There is only one Sistine Chapel, you don't get a Sistine Chapel every time you try.
Its amazing how much more of the bunny you see with a bit bigger display...
They're only hating it because they have the 4s and wouldn't be able to upgrade.
When an iPhone with a larger screen comes out we'll see remarks like;
OMG it beautiful.
Unreal, apple why did you wait so long?
where's the best place to sell my 4s?
Why did I waste the upgrade on the 4s?
Look Samsung copied apple by increasing the screen size of their xxxxxx phone.
I don't wear skinny jeans so a larger phone wouldn't be an issue. YMMV

I'd love it if Apple actually made the phone slightly smaller and went edge to edge with the 3.5" screen, it would make it easier to stow in a pocket. I would absolutely hate to see the phone get any bigger, even by 1mm. I thought the 3G was too big when it was launched, but I was willing to live with it, because it was new technology and just so damn useful, I expect a new device to be a little bigger, but then I expect the next one to be smaller, lighter faster and cheaper to produce, the next device will be the 6th iteration of the iPhone, to my mind they should have put it on a diet by now and focused on innovating in software and reducing power usage.
The 4G and 4GS are slightly too large and too heavy because of all the metal and glass. The 3G and 3GS were lighter, even if the plastic did break really easily. It hasn't stopped me owning them and using them every day, they are great devices, but they aren't perfect and I would welcome a phone that didn't need such big pockets or require me to keep my trousers up with a belt.
The next iPhone would benefit from losing a little weight and girth, they can keep the current resolution and aspect ratio for developers and innovate by being smaller. I would even support Apple making the screen a little smaller than 3.5" and increasing the pixel density to make the handset even more svelte.
I'm still trying to work out how people forgot that when it comes to portable devices like phones, smaller is usually better. The iPhone is primarily a phone, it should fit where a phone needs to fit, the fact it does other things should be secondary to it's primary purpose, if your buying a device to primarily play video in HD, maybe you shouldn't be buying a phone.
I'm still also waiting for an iPad that is the size of a book, so that I can store it in the pocket of my bag where I usually keep a book and hold it in one hand like I can a book. I don't want to cary something extra, I want to replace something I already carry with me, with something the same size or slightly smaller, that weighs about the same or a bit less and does what the object it replaces does and more.
I could get a Kindle, but a Kindle just replicates the original function of a book in a way that is less personal, I want to feel a connection to the device and feel like it gives me something I didn't have before. You can't strike up a conversation with a stranger on a train about the book they are reading on their kindle, because you'd have to go to some lengths to see what they we're reading, it could even border on harassment, but if you see the cover of a book they are holding, you can easily and innocently start a casual conversation about a book or Author you have in common. Technology is supposed to make it easier for us to communicate and express ourselves, not harder.
i am flabbergasted after reading some of the comments here.
Does a quarter of an inch on all sides really make that much difference?
Someone here think they are going to have to change their wardrobe. Another one equates a larger screen to carrying around a 17" mbp. A lot of usage of the word "lug", as in lug around. Then of course the inevitable comparison to an ipad.
Unbelievable how some people's world is going to fall apart because the iphone will get a 4" screen. God forbid they make it bigger.
Psychiatrists are going to get an influx of new iphone related patients which they'll diagnose as having iscreenosis - the inability to use or confront a larger iphone screen or iscreenphobia - the fear of using a larger iphone screen :d
Why would Apple change the resolution? There's no need.
If they keep the same resolution and increase the screen size the PPI will be approximately 290, which won't be noticeably worse than what it is now; and devs, like you I assume, won't have to make a app that supports a different resolution.
...
Umm, just WOW! Don't even know where to start so..WOW! 1mm?
