True, however, the technology from many of the iPad3 display articles sounded like a very proprietary solution developed by Sharp (vs. "an LCD" panel from X, Y and Z).

The idea is that Apple requires much higher volume than any 1 manufacturer can keep up with. The only problem is the difference in quality as noted by the different iPad 2 screens.

The Galaxy S shows that a larger screen doesnt really need a bigger body in order to accommodate a 4 inch screen. So iphone 5 can technically be the same size as the 4 and still add in the 4 inch screen without problems.

I think the biggest screen Apple could put into the current iPhone body is 3.7"

But that's with no bezel whatsoever on the sides.

Like I said before... the Galaxy S gets its extra inches by being a different shape... much taller than the iPhone screen.

In order for the iPhone to get to 4" and keep its 3:2 ratio.... it will most certainly have to grow beyond the current iPhone 4 dimensions.

I wonder, does an iPhone really become a benefit with a 4" screen. And how many times can you revise a phone without increasing the screen size. Lets say the iPhone 5 gets a 4" screen. Then that would mean that the iPhone 5S will have the same see screen. Then what about the iPhone 6? Will it sport a 5" display? How much is too much when it comes to innovation? is there any such thing as over kill? :apple:

Considering that we've had 5 iPhone models... 10 if you count iPod touches, with a 3.5" screen, and in that time every one else has moved to 4" as the golden standard, how is that over kill? Apple probably loses some sales because of a 1/2". Size does matter to a lot of people ;)

A 5" screen is when you move into the ridiculous, and the phones that have them aren't generally great sellers for any company, but they at least offer another option. Some people have big hands and big faces.

So no, I think you're really reaching, my friend. I don't think Apple would ever need to go larger than 4".
To your question, how does it benefit? I think that's obvious. Ever download an app, like it, but it's a chore because it's too crammed? A solitaire game is a great example. Those cards be tiny for anyone that doesn't have dainty fingers. That tinch bigger makes a game effortless and fun, vs. inadvertently making contact with the wrong object frequently. Note that games that always seem to be hits are games where 1 finger is the main idea. (Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, etc.) I think developers would benefit for the increase in size.
Now on that note, I do think Apple errors by only ever having 1 model of iPhone. (You can't count previous generations they'll still sell.) They're the only phone maker that does this. I think they limit market share in this way. Could they offer a 5" display and a 4" and a 3.5"? Sure! They'll cite fragmentation and developer strain, which is slightly true. I still think Apple would have a win with a slider iPhone model with a physical keyboard. There are millions upon millions of people who won't buy phones without one, and that take the iPhone right off the table in their consideration.

But what I think about that doesn't matter, because Apple will never do it.

But I want a bigger iPhone. Period.

HTC Mozart 7 had lesser width than my present iPhone 4S. I don't want a phone like that. The present ratio (4:3?) is fine.

Gah, no, please not a bigger iPhone :(

----------

I agree with mingoglia. As long as the physical size doesn't increase, I'm cool with a bigger screen.

Agreed, and as long as no fragmentation occurs in the App market.

I think the most important thing is not the size of the screen but the edges around it.

You can see the Galaxy and the edges are HUGE, the phone looks horrible and the final size of the device is GIANT.

I rather have the same 3.5 screen size with higher resolution and an edge to edge screen.

4" will be good but only if the screen is edge to edge to keep the iPhone relatively small...

Which is your opinion. If you look at that poll, and the large number of respondents (and this isn't the first poll of it's kind), it's largely in the 70 percentile that people want a bigger screen. It's also become the golden standard, and neither of those things can be ignored by even Apple.

I know Apple likes to create things we didn't know we wanted, but that's a motto they use in developing new products. When it comes to existing products, they might not always be first, but they always deliver in time.

I liken it to Blu-Ray. Still not there, but you don't see the masses demanding it. (It's largely been ignored as a format, period.) Now say Blu-Ray had caught fire like the DVD did, and everyone in the world was running out and loading up on players and media, you know Apple would have invested in the licensing. It never happened, and it won't happen. In this example, the user can at least use an external drive if they choose to. In the event of phone, that's not an option.

Demand + need They also paid witness to a huge internet spanking when the iPhone 4S did not have a larger screen. They got bent over and spanked by not just the tech news sites, but by the people. The 4S is a great seller, but it's also been a device attracting new users. This is the first time people weren't flocking for early upgrades. Last year, the early upgrade was so in demand, AT&T revised their policy because of that demand This year, not any outcry for it, and we didn't get early upgrades. Those things are telling. It shows most people are willing to wait for the next model. Siri wasn't a big enough draw for existing owners, because they want a new design and screen. So says all the polls.

Rumors said we were getting a iP5 with a 4" screen this year.

I said then and I will say it now. Not happening.

Apple uses a fatter aspect ratio than other phones and 4" 3:2 would be too fat ergonomically for Apple, a company that pays a lot of attention to these things.

Except there absolutely were prototypes floating around with the 4" screen. If Apple were so dead set against the idea, they wouldn't be toying with it in their labs. The level of detail that leaked on the iPhone 5 was too concrete.

i prey to god that itll have an 4 screen. Apple cant pull a "4s" twice otherwise they'll be laughed at. and who says itll be much bigger. The iphone needs a new design anyway. Its getting boring. hope the refresh will be during the summer as many 4 users will be able to upgrade around that time

Such pools on sites like macrumours are useless. There is a number of pools you can make that will shows 3/4 of the people wanting X, Y and Z. Reality is somewhat diffrent most of the time.

Looking at them side by side I fail to see what all the whining is about.I guess if the phone stays the same size it will be fine though.I don't want to walk around holding a DVD case sized monstrosity to my ear.

I'd love to see it bumped up to 4" with edge to edge screen. The can easily move the home button to the back or side.

i tihnk a 4 inch screen will be gladly accepted. i think it would be a perfect screen size!

Well as long as 70% of the secret android fans here think its perfect, I'm ready to throw out Steve Job's opinion. Seriously how can any one think they could have a more informed idea of what would be perfect than someone who eats, sleeps, and breathes the iPhone? Now make that someone Steve Jobs. Its almost laughable.

Apple innovates and then leads, they don't follow. If they thought a 4" screen was best, the original iPhone would have had one. I hate to disappoint the majority of you, but the iPhone will never have a bigger screen. It may have a pico projector or some star trek hologram doohickey, but it won't ever have a bigger LCD screen!

However, we all know absolutes are not absolute, so should Apples top management face some horrible group accident where they all, God forbid, perish and an entirely new group is brought in, and that entirely new group consists of only people that have never heard of Steve Jobs. Then in turn, if this new group releases a 4" iPhone, I will eschew technology all together and move into the woods. :apple:

Time to observe the response of the flip-floppers.

Having formerly condemned a larger iPhone display with great zeal, this is sure to upset them.

If indeed the 3.5" is going the way of the dodo bird, there's going to be a lot of very unhappy people agonizing over Apples decision.

Yet that said, we also know that suddenly they will flip-flop and embrace it, since that's what iFans do.

It's a fertile playground for the hypocritical.

I welcome this change, even being two years late, as it's the right thing to do.

The advantages are many, the shortcomings few.

Just to simply put it, iphone will eventually have to upgrade its screen size, any real tech head will know in the real world tech moves forward and never stays in the same spot, the truth hurts but take it like a man and move on.:apple:

Agreed.

4 inch screen would be good, but I don't feel like i'm missing anything wit the current size.

steve is dead and things will change. "the original iphone would have had one" just like it had apps, mms, copy & paste, a videocamera ... ??? all things they adopted from other phones. Why not the screen too. Its so sad how blindly some people follow a ceo
