It's funny how US centered this is but they still say WORLD. lol
AT&T and Verizon vs Facebook and Amazon.
It's just plain ridiculous.

But hey! What was I expecting from something named BrandZZZZ ?!

This list obviously has an American bias, I don't say that because of Apple and Google and the like. It's AT&T and Verizon which have me scratching my head. They don't exist outside the United States. Being in the top ten of a world's most valuable brand list makes no sense, and makes it hard to take seriously at all.

Indeed, these lists are created by firms to position themselves as thought leaders in brand marketing.

Value is intangible. How can you attribute a dollar figure to how one feels? How do you measure negative perceptions of a brand?

Considering I am barely aware of 3 of those brands not being American I find this difficult to take seriously. Sounds like more of a USA list

I don't know where you live, but all of these brands are global and exist and sell products in almost every country. Either you are in one of those countries that no one sells in (for various reasons) or you don't get out enough. Since you seem to have internet access, and visit sites like MR, I am guessing the latter.:D

I am, however, surprised that brands based outside of the US are not as high on the list.

What exactly is the brand appeal of AT&T and Verizon?

Paying bills isn't a blast, I'm with ya, but I have to say I disagree with the salty disposition towards wireless providers.

Do they not provide you with a service that you use on a daily basis? Do they not assist in the forward movement of technology? Didn't AT&T take a calculated risk as a launch partner with Apple for a little product called the iPhone? AT&T is also pushing the envelope now with automation services, content delivery and even home security. I pay a slight premium for their services for the same reason I buy Apple products, I purchase for value. When I break down my monthly fees, I pay about $4 a day for being connected to the world from pretty much anywhere I go and for home security that ties in seamlessly to that system. Comparatively speaking, I can't even get a pretzel and a bottle of water for that price anymore. AT&T has been in business for 133 years and you ask what kind of brand value they have? Think Different.

Yeah, just another agency making up their own "formula" to get noticed. That said, we used these guys to better understand how people perceived our brand and they helped us in one regard, but not enough to justify their asking price IMO.

Also....

Surprising, IMO, that IBM holds spot #4 on the list when truthfully, most people don't even own a computer product or piece of software with their name on it anymore.

I guess their change in business model towards consultancy is paying off for them ... but as an I.T. guy, my experience with IBM has always conjured up terms like "bloated", "overpriced" and "dinosaur". I'm not sure I'd be comfortable signing up with them on a long term contract to do any type of I.T. project for our business?

sad that tobacco is still in the top 10

right. i'm shocked people still smoke, figured by 2015 people would realize how idiotic it truly is

People still drink to excess, do crack and text while driving*

People are idiots.

Problem is there is a constant new supply of idiots growing up.

*Possibly all at the same time.

Not sure if this list should be taken seriously. World brands? American Telecos make that list how? What is IBM doing way up on that list and yet Facebook doesn't even make the top 10? I mean nearly a quarter of all people in the world have a FaceBook account. Just think about that. And I'm not a FaceBook fan and closed down my account years ago. But it's still relevant. How is Verizon a more valuable brand than Coca Cola? And Marlboro? I haven't even thought about cigarette brands in years. I can't even remember the last time I heard someone use the word Marlboro. It sounds so 1990s. I can't even think of someone I know who still smokes. I'm glad I live in a city that has smoking bans because my lungs are quite sensitive to cigarette smoke. Even campus is smoke-free.

How much BRAND value does FB really have? I'm not surprised that it doesn't top the list. Their product is intangible and is merely used by people for social connections. The ONLY thing they have is eyes for advertising.

IBM = business world. That should go without needing further explanation.

I'm w/ you on Verizon. I get AT&T though. As for Marlboro, the rest of the world is quite aware of their brand, especially in lower income countries. Their predatory practices are well in overdrive in those countries.

But at the end of the day, this whole list is just BS. The company deals with mind share propaganda, not market research. All companies like this are the same.

If it wasn't for Apple stuff keeping me relatively clued into what's happening in the US I don't think I'd have ever have heard of AT&T and Verizon.

Amazon would be way up their in my circle in terms of brand recognition.

IBM doesn't surprise me. Turn on any sporting event and you're likely to see one IBM commercial after another.

Why? Its almost as if there is this thing called personal choice where people can choose what they want to do with their body.

Its more sad that you think it is sad than it is sad in reality.

It would be more sad if a company like Whole Foods which has an entire business built upon the fraudulent notion that 'organic' is inherently good would be in the top 10 than a tobacco company.

Look everyone

When a list titled BrandZ(tm), don't hold too much stock in ITS value.

BrandZ feels like the HuffPost of market research, a bunch of mostly illiterate twenty somethings that spend most of their day writing a headline (without using spellcheck) rather then focusing on the content of their post.

Even execs from McDonald's knows their brand has gone down the drain in the last decade and are spending their time trying to figure out how to rebrand themselves as a quality food vendor instead of a vendor of heart disease and diabetes, and the only reason why Coca-Cola is profitable these days is because they sell bottled water because nobody wants their children drinking carbonated chemicals anymore.

I also don't need a list telling me Apple is highly valuable. The lineups of hipsters at Apple Stores waiting to toss away a 6 month old device for a slightly updated one is proof enough that Apple knows how to do business and make money, the day I no longer see those lineups for a product release is the day I sell my stock.

Yeah but I'm surprised it's that high. I get that it's a solid brand. I guess I'm not engrossed enough in the business world and don't watch enough sports to know why IBM is so relevant in 2015.
