Amid multiple reports that Apple will no longer include a power adapter in its iPhone boxes starting with the iPhone 12 later this year, it appears Apple is surveying recent iPhone buyers to ask about what they've done with the power adapters that came with their previous iPhones.

Apple's surveys typically cover numerous aspects of its products, but Brazilian Twitter user @Gunstaxl recently noted (via 9to5Mac) that the iPhone survey he received included several questions about how he uses the charger, including one specifically addressing the fate of the charger that was included with his previous iPhone, an iPhone XR.

We found one other recent mention of this survey, from fellow Brazilian Twitter user @bedabb_, so it looks like Apple's survey may be limited to that country. In this second case, Apple asked about the charger that came with the user's previous iPhone 7 Plus.

Among the possible answers to Apple's question about the fate of the previous charger:
  • Gave it to a family member or friend
  • Recycled it
  • Lost or misplaced it
  • No longer working or not working well
  • Still using it at home
  • Still using it outside of my home (e.g., work, school, other location)
  • Still have it, but don't use it
  • Sold it or traded it in with the iPhone
While still only a rumor at this point, the idea of Apple removing the power adapter from the iPhone box has certainly generated controversy, although removing the adapter will save Apple money, reduce e-waste, and allow for more shipping efficiency. Many users already have numerous adapters from previous iPhone and iPad purchases, while some may prefer other charging solutions such as multi-port chargers or wireless chargers.

Apple appears to be preparing its own 20-watt fast-charging adapter that would be sold as a separate accessory, an upgrade over the 18-watt adapter that currently ships in the box with the iPhone 11 Pro and iPad Pro and is also available on a standalone basis.

I use an Anker power supply with multiple USB plugs - including, now, USB C Anker plugs. I find these far more convenient than a 1 plug 1 cable charger.

That said, I am using that 18W USB C charger that Apple provided with the 11 Pro Max. But the 5w iPhone bricks before? I can't even give those away (and I've tried).

are they getting rid of the lightning cable and the power block or just the power block. I would be ok with getting rid of just the power block, the cable wouldn’t take up much room.

Charger only ( and EarPods ). The rumours suggest Apple will include a "USB-C " to lightning cable.

I, and I assume most people, sell it with their old phone, therefore we need a new one with whatever phone we upgrade to. Stop being cheap and continue to include the adapter.

Yup. Sell it, gift it to a relative are probably the most common cases when swapping phones.

Just waiting for Apple to hire the guy responsible for the mobile Diablo announcement so he can go on stage and ask "what, don't you have chargers?"

To me this can only work in their favor one way: The phone is cheaper and when buying you select which accessories you want with it for small extra cost. I'd rather not see them profiting significantly from an accessory that is essential for the phone. Or trying to pull ******** like "you should use Apple chargers and nothing else" in problem situations.

I would assume most ppl do as I do and use them at various different plugs in the home and at work. Saves having to take a charge with you everywhere.

.... well reading the responses here it seems most ppl for some reason keep them in the box!? Is that just a USA thing? I'm from the UK and can't think of anyone I know that doesn't just have them dotted around the house for convenience. Surely its a pain having to take 1 charger around with you every time you need to charge your phone?

My only consideration is what about new Apple buyers... would they have to buy a charger separately now? This is plain cost-cutting in the name of environment-friendliness or whatever. The right survey should be a public survey with an added question:

2 (a) If you are a new Apple buyer, would you be okay if your new purchase came without a charger?
2 (b) Would you then want to pay/ appreciate paying for an Apple charger?

Apple is working on an assumption that the entire world owns an iPhone/ iPad and, therefore, has an Apple charger already, or an MFi charger, which is incorrect. This would be good if they were to use this to optimise the costs for the customer and their own selves both, and then they can claim the moral high ground of environment-friendliness.

In my house, there are Android devices being charged with an Apple charger, since I expect clean power out of those chargers. So, a charger in-the-box is not something you want to stop providing. Can't say it enough, this is plain cost-cutting and looks really bad unless they reduce the retail price of the supplied charger from the retail price of the phone, at which point, it is a fair deal.
