It’s a win all around for Apple, no doubt. Not necessarily for the customer if they need a charger. Those cost savings for Apple are unlikely to be passed on.

Everybody already has at least a couple chargers at this point. Any USB-A or USB-C port will do. We’re talking hundreds of tons less paper and plastic waste, per year. I can’t believe people are whining about this in advance, but I look forward to all the nerd tears when Apple stops bundling the charger. 😂

I have a box on a shelf with a ton of chargers and cables and i don't need any more of them. Apple is late with this.

I'd be perfectly fine with this except you know that they won't pass on the cost savings to the customer.

I'd much rather see an Apple branded power brick that powers my Macbook Pro (USB-C) and has 3 or 4 other USB ports on it. Sad that I have to buy something like that off of Amazon made by a Chinese company that made their company name from a random word generator.

I’m not sure if your comment about whining was in general or in response to my post. I’m not, and I do have a few 5 watt chargers but zero above that. There is nothing wrong with an expectation that a thousand plus dollar phone come with a decent charger. But I see how some people may have that base covered. Regardless, I see the move benefiting Apple but not so much the consumer.

Except that Apple’s margins have actually decreased in recent years. So their products are costing more to make, but they are choosing to absorb some of that higher costs instead of passing it down to the customers.

And if it’s a multi-USB hub you need, there are plenty of reputable brands online. You shouldn’t be in a situation where you find yourself having to choose only from dodgy chinese-sounding brands.

Apple is definitely nickle and diming us. And honestly they really need to get rid of the Lightning connector in favor of the USB-C option. Universal standards.
If they go USB-C then I can use my third-party adapters.
And if they ship it with a USB-C to Lightning cable, you couldn't use it with your third-party adapters because they all have built-in cables that cannot be removed?

One of the best trends in charging has been the separation of charging brick and charging cable (coupled of course with using a standard port on the charger) which has enabled lots of gadgets to ship with a charging cable only (fitness trackers, Bluetooth headphones, etc.). Heck Airpods and other Apple/Beats headphones ship without a charging brick. Even the Apple Watch doesn't come with a charging brick anymore.

Why don’t they leave the phone out of the box as well. They’ve cut the dock, cleaning cloth, headphone case, and sim ejector tool from some models.

They should just say heck with giving customers anything at all leaving just a pair of headphones and that’s it. That’s the box.

Then at WWDC Tim can announce they will no longer slow down our iPhones

lol sheesh

I've always sent the power adapters with the phones to their new owners. But I still have a few extra laying around because I bought them to keep in key locations so I didn't have to drag an adapter with me all the time.

I did not get a survey from Apple even though I have quite of few products from them. The only email I ever get from Apple is when there is a new iPhone.

Don't see what the problem is as long as the price reduction reflects the exclusion. There's no difference to the consumer. It would be very good for the environment for sure and that's been proven already.

I wouldn’t count on a price reduction and if they claim it’s there it’s likely to be very 1984 style:

“We were planning a price of only 1220 $, but since we omitted the charger you can get it for only 1199$”

(And everyone would quickly forget that last year’s model was 1000$ with charger)

Interesting that "I throw it away" isn't on the list. I guess they like to pretend that people only ever recycle things.

I wonder how a pile of 100 000 000 chargers and cables would look like.

There's an option that apple removes them from the box and makes them a free or $1 Opt-In for those that way. If you message it as for environmental processes then that will eliminate people who won't need them getting them.

Amid multiple reports that Apple will no longer include a power adapter in its iPhone boxes starting with the iPhone 12 later this year, it appears Apple is surveying recent iPhone buyers to ask about what they've done with the power adapters that came with their previous iPhones.

Apple's surveys typically cover numerous aspects of its products, but Brazilian Twitter user @Gunstaxl recently noted (via 9to5Mac) that the iPhone survey he received included several questions about how he uses the charger, including one specifically addressing the fate of the charger that was included with his previous iPhone, an iPhone XR.

We found one other recent mention of this survey, from fellow Brazilian Twitter user @bedabb_, so it looks like Apple's survey may be limited to that country. In this second case, Apple asked about the charger that came with the user's previous iPhone 7 Plus.

Among the possible answers to Apple's question about the fate of the previous charger:
  • Gave it to a family member or friend
  • Recycled it
  • Lost or misplaced it
  • No longer working or not working well
  • Still using it at home
  • Still using it outside of my home (e.g., work, school, other location)
  • Still have it, but don't use it
  • Sold it or traded it in with the iPhone
While still only a rumor at this point, the idea of Apple removing the power adapter from the iPhone box has certainly generated controversy, although removing the adapter will save Apple money, reduce e-waste, and allow for more shipping efficiency. Many users already have numerous adapters from previous iPhone and iPad purchases, while some may prefer other charging solutions such as multi-port chargers or wireless chargers.

Apple appears to be preparing its own 20-watt fast-charging adapter that would be sold as a separate accessory, an upgrade over the 18-watt adapter that currently ships in the box with the iPhone 11 Pro and iPad Pro and is also available on a standalone basis.

The older iPhone chargers are too slow and underpowered to charge modern devices. They know this damn well. They should be providing the latest and most powered chargers with every new device. Tim is a cheapskate! Jobs put everything needed for the device IN THE BOX.

I just cleaned out my office and I have a whole gallon sized Zip-lock bag of various USB chargers and cables. However, the only time I have plugged an cable into an iPhone in the past 2 years was to use CarPlay in my vehicle. I have Anker wireless chargers in my office at home, my office at work, in my living room and on my bedroom night stand. I am perfectly fine if Apple stops including them with future iPhones.

Here's the solution that's eco friendly and doesn't come across as milking the customers. Publicly announce that a charger is not included in the box for eco reason but provide a voucher to claim one for free if needed and make sure inventory is available in-store and online at time of device purchase. And, stop providing useless 5W chargers that end up in landfills. 15W should be bare minimum. Problem solved.

I am surprised because I have been using Apple products for over 30 years and I have never seen a survey of any kind.
I think they would like a
yes, apple phone chargers are single handedly contributing to global warming. give me a break.

The cost of the new iphone is probably gonna be another $100 and this is their way of keeping costs down.
wow some people think apple is really doing this to make more money. I guess I have trouble remembering how some people are flat out ignorant

Total Apple spin. They’ll go on stage this fall and tout how they no longer include power adapters because it’s environmentally friendly, but really what’s most important to them is keeping Wall Street happy.
Both can be true at the same time.

I give it to whomever I give the old phone to, cable included.
Without checking if they actually need it?

I have to admit, my 11's charger is still in the box. I charge on a stand with my AW. ;)
My Pro Max gets charged overnight by the bed on an Anker wireless charger, that also charges my watch.

I’m happy to just get a phone in the box.

im also pretty sure no one here wouldn’t be able to charge a new iPhone that came without a charger.

Leaving the charger out of the box and providing a 1 one time voucher for a no cost charger would be nice.
