Apple is on the track of elevating how user experiences iPhone all over again. You will now have the choice on every iPhone to get it without the power brick, cable and charging port so once original battery charge has been depleted you just put it back into eco friendly packaging and recycle it. For just $499 more you can get the model that is sustainable over factory default single charge cycle and comes with power adapter, lightning cable and lightning port on the device itself. Glittery magic.

Those 5w chargers are still widely used. Business trips (even last year) - several airports were chalk full of those 5w bricks plugged into phones that had red <10% batteries right before a flight.

I've had the fun experience of pulling out my Anker multi-port 2.4a charger and showing people how much faster their phone can charge... the look of amazement on people's faces... it is sad how many people don't know this.

Anker is nice but they do have some issues every so often. When I use my multiport, the iPad screen gets glitchy and doesn't always register swipes. Going back to the stock charger makes this issue go away. I replaced the unit and the replacement does the same thing

Also it's ironic that people are talking about how environmentally unfriendly it is but yet I bet many of them upgrade every year

I'm in the camp to do away with the charger because it's good for the environment and Earth.

yes, apple phone chargers are single handedly contributing to global warming. give me a break.

I am ok with that if it reflects in a -$19.99 in my purchase.

The cost of the new iphone is probably gonna be another $100 and this is their way of keeping costs down.

Kindles haven't shipped with chargers for years. no loss at all.

USB-C has been around for years now, USB-A is dying, clumsy and inconvenient. If you can't afford $20 for a new charger you should be buying a cheap android phone

Excellent examples on the Kindles. My first one shipped almost a decade ago, and without power supply. Available as a cheap accessory if needed. That’s how it’s done.

Agreed completely. The ultra-thin cables are garbage. I don't need another iPhone charger, but Apple better not take the Lightning cable out of the box. I'm lucky if one of those pieces of junk lasts a year.

You have the option of wireless charging. After having yet another iPhone with broken Lightning port that’s what I did.

I know I said this already, but I'd be happy to sacrifice the charger if Apple would also sacrifice their stupid proprietary port in return. Every new device now comes with a USB-C port, cables are already piling up for that, why not protect the environment some more by tapping into the existing USB-C ‘infrastructure’ out there?
I don't mind reducing waste, I’m just so sick of corporate hypocrisy.

Good idea, all up for it.

I'm in the camp of making smartphones that don't need (or want) to be replaced every year or two. That's better for the environment, earth, and customers... not so good for Apple.

Doesn’t Apple already do that? The iPhones last for several years.

Consumers choosing to replace a smartphone every year is unsustainable behavior.

Trade-ins don't require you to send in power adapters or cables so I have a gajillion lying around. I also must be particularly gentle with the cables since I've never had a stock one fray on me in my 12 years of using an iPhone. People have different usage patterns, but for me, it makes perfect sense to not include them in the box for environmental reasons.

As many have said, with each new phone, the charger that comes with it ends up somewhere in the house or at work, so I don't have to worry about not having one with me. One on the nightstand, one in the car, one in the office, one in the travel bag.

In the event I sell an iPhone, the charger goes with it.

I, and I assume most people, sell it with their old phone, therefore we need a new one with whatever phone we upgrade to. Stop being cheap and continue to include the adapter.

I always believed the majority don’t sell their own phone but instead keep it for kids or extras or in a drawer. And for the adapters, I think we *all* either eventually lose or break one but even if not, we without thinking keep the adapters for re-use later in another room or as replacement for the broken/lost one.

I find this question from Apple to be rather silly unless there is a large # of people who take their new phone out of the case and never touch the power adapter/cord, which I'd find AMAZING if even 1 out of 20 owners did that.

Exactly!!!

Until Apple moves in this direction, any fluff from Tim about sustainability and care for the environment is absolutely meaningless.

I for one would pay more for and be more satisfied with a slightly thicker slightly heavier phone that would NOT need a case (and then be weight-equal to today's phone with a case)...one that's designed for longevity and function in mind first and not marketing/fashion/appearance first.

Part of their move to a portless iPhone. Wireless charging only on future models. Just a question of time.
How can do many people think this will be the future/norm? I use my phone plugged in after dying quite frequently. Unless they make something that clips around the device or a very strong magnet. Not such a great idea for people with defibrillators. And what’s the benefit of pushing for a portless iPhone? Better waterproofing? Does the majority use their phones in ways that current waterproofing is not enough? Maybe I’m lacking education on what this could mean for the future of iPhone. It’s not even that I’m totally opposed, I just don’t get it.

How hard would it be to have an option that says: I already have a charger then reduce the price by say $5 or whatever? Then get a thank you with a note that explains the reduced environmental impact of a smaller box etc? That way new buyers aren’t having to shop around for a power supply - though everyone I know has a phone. Even the homeless in the streets.

i never said that so don’t take my post out of context; however, these chargers (not necessarily from Apple but from all smartphones) contribute 300,000 tons of e-waste!

I do have a lot of poer adapters, but i do not throw them away. Back before iphone when every new phone or device had it’s own distinct power adapter and plug, i used to hoard them becasue i wouldn’t even know where to get a replacement if one got lost.
So i still tend to hoard, but have thrown away all the old power cords. Well most of them.
