(if you're using Ethernet, you're tethered anyway so an adapter isn't really an issue). Heck, there were still express card slots.

Adaptors are an issue as they work loose. When you constantly plug and unplug the adaptor the port becomes worn and the adaptors have a habit of falling out. If you are left-handed you tend to snag them with your notebook. It's also a pain in the ass if you have to use an adaptor when you are plugged into some kit in a data centre squatting on the floor.

Probably been mentioned before in the thread, but;

It's a bit late in the day to be asking about design issues for a release this year?

I agree for iMacs and Mac Pros for sure. But for mixing engineers and indie artists, being able to mix on the go with a simple headset plugged into the 3.5 mm jack on a MacBook Pro is just a necessity

And in that case a lightening to 3.5mm adapter would be perfectly fine.

I would like the rMBP to keep the MagSafe and the headphone port, but after reading the over reaction and ridiculous hyperbole on this thread I almost want them to remove them just to annoy these people.

The very fact this question is even being asked means alot. It takes alot to even include this question in the survey. Does it mean the headphone jack is gone in the next macbook? Meh. Not necessarily. The leaked chassis of the next revision still has a headphone jack if i remember correctly. This might just be to gauge how people feel about the future of products and where they are heading. If there's one thing apple gets right, it's studying people and their habits and trying to "see beyond".

What would be their justification for the removal on the macbook pro though? It's not space concerns. Is it just "hey. We have a vision for wireless so...here you go. Throw out your headphones"? I think they could conceivably remove it just to force this big transition into wireless to go faster. They'll lose sales but if they believe it'll even out over time and customers would eventually come back, they might be ready to take that risk.

We might stop and think there's no way apple would do it right now of all times since the MacBook hasn't been updated in so long...its time for it to come out soon. Right? But apple is becoming less and less predictable. Things that make sense aren't necessarily what they do anymore. Really hard to figure them out anymore. I dont think its entirely impossible that they'll have a redesign soon with no headphone jack. It would actually be the perfect time for them to do it. It plays on the emotions perfectly. People get pissed about the jack being gone, but then "ohh" and "ahhh" at the sexy new design and then decide the pros outweigh the cons and find a way to justify themselves buying one.

The more i think about it, the more it makes sense for them to remove it in the very next revision SOON

They're not going to be pushing lightning if they do this, though. Apple pushes wireless. Notice how they didn't announce amazing lightning earbuds. They announced wireless.

*rolls eyes*

They're pushing wireless. They've always pushed wireless.

You might as well move to Android now, then. Or maybe WM.

And when the batteries run out, you need wires.

I was pissed as well at Apple for removing the Ethernet port. It is more reliable than wifi and often faster.
Yes it is more reliable but the Thunderbolt to Ethernet adaptor is not working for you?
At home I have no problem being 100% wireless because my WiFi is good. At work no so much but I switch to my adapter to be wired and that's it. I'm not losing sleep over it...

Sorry, I like the idea to get rid of old technologies.

People are saying that you need an adapter for everything. Well, just put the adapter on your old headphone and use it like it would be one cable.

We should get rid of the keyboard too, I like the idea of that :D

Simply put:
  • We own, on average, thirty sets of headphones ranging from earbuds up through high-isolation drum kit headphones
  • We use them for different purposes in different environments
  • They all need to work with every piece of equipment we're using, whether it is our cell phone, our laptop, our expensive audio interface, or our music keyboard....
Then you must have adapters already to get you between the two standards that are 3.5mm and 6.5mm? Most audio gear, mixers and the like are 6.5mm. 3.5mm is rare in studio equipment.
I've got a 3.5mm to 6.5mm for my HD650s and a 6.5mm to 3.5mm for my HD25s.
So what if you ended up needing one more? You'd just buy one and have no further dramas beyond complaining on forums.

Get rid of that useless Thunderbolt port and get us USB-C, users of TB are more of a minority than the headphone jack ones...

Wow, talk about ignorant. Yes, let's go BACKWARD to USB. Why use a MODERN interconnect, the one that can carry USB, video, network traffic, raw data, and be daisy-chained?

Inform yourself and stop cheerleading for retrograde junk.

SD card slot is perfect for adding a 128 GB or 256 GB card that is used for Time Machine backup.

SD card slot is also perfect for adding a 128 GB or 256 GB card containing a moderately sized library of movies, or a large library of music and audio books.

As far as the headphone jack is concerned: Not now, but I will when I get an iPhone 7. I need _somewhere_ to plug in my headphones.
Yep exactly. I've got a 256GB transcend SD card that sits flush in the slot so you don't even know it's there. I'd like the SD slot to stay, but I do t think it will long term.

So what happens when everyone else abandons it in the next 2-3 years?

Exactly. By the time this would come to pass wireless headphones will be even more popular thanks to the iPhone 7. And we should have BT 5.0 in MacBooks at that point, with dramatically higher audio quality. This is a bit different situation than the phone where you only have one port anyway.

I hope I will not get killed for that here, but I correctly reported in the survey, that I never use the headphone jack on my iMac (and also no external speakers).

I do have HEOS speakers at home, that I can feed via IP.
Also, I think, digital sound should be converted directly at the speaker, avoiding all issues with loss of signal quality and synchronicity through long speaker cables.

This will however kill the market for "magical" pure gold high-end speaker cables - as a physicist I won't cry for these.

On a phone yeah, I could lose the port. It'll take some getting used to because bluetooth headphones are a compromise.

But on my computers where I use recording equipment (low-end, I'm not a pro). Nah. They're not considering doing what they did to the Macbook are they? Their pro line reduced to a single port. Lame.

My only question is why? If it's just so that Ive can do yet another video where he boasts about having a laptop that is 0.00001 inch thinner, then hell no. I simply won't buy it, the same way I won't buy a phone that is more annoying to use than the previous one I had. I use the USB, the headphone and the other ports on a daily basis for work.

Remove the headphone jack on iPhone/iPad is understandable because it will make the device thinner. But on MacBook, I cannot see how the MacBook (esp. MacBook Pro) can be ever slimmer with all the things that a computer needs?

Urgh, it's not about thinness. iPod Touch is thinner and still has a jack. iPhone 7 is also no thinner than the 6/6S.

I can deal with it not being on my phone (when I do upgrade - but not to the 7) but on my MBP, NO! I use it every day at work
