I think heads are rolling because no one expected a retina like screen In the nexus 7. Something tells me next ipadmini won't have retina

Not like google makes the screen
Everyone knew this screen was coming and the price point

What are you talking about? He was already leaving so no, it's not a big deal.

If I remember correctly, as per Tim Cook, he was suppose to be leaving late 2014, which is still about a year away. And that's assuming he's gone already. As another poster above said, this might just be an error. I guess we'll find out tomorrow some time.

yeah, you and me both.

I mean really there's nothing to go on. But I do remember wondering where he was at WWDC. There's some photos of Tim & execs/board members prior to the start of the event and I didn't see Bob anywhere. Also during the event when the video panned the front row I didn't see him anywhere. But I did see the other SVPs...

I was thinking the same thing. Given the Nexus 7 refresh, not having a retina display on the next Mini would be inexcusable, and the appropriate heads should roll.

He's probably just stepping down from SVP leadership to focus on hardware for wearables until he rides out the remainder of his contract, especially if they need 100+ engineers to make iWatch come to market quickly (and before his contract ends).

If you really believe what you say then it shouldn't be Mansfield's head should get rolled because he's SVP of the Technologies division. If anything it should be Dan Riccio's head should roll since he's SVP of the Hardware division.

But either way, most Apple fans / followers would know that new products are not coming until the Fall, so right now no one's head should roll.

How so we know the next mini won't be retina? Besides, Dan Riccio is SVP of hardware engineering so wouldn't he be the one to go?

He announced his retirement then the bribed him to stay.... that's my point. He had already decided it was time to move on and big papa apple couldn't stand to see him go. The writing was on the wall.

If they can discontinue Bob Mansfield, they can discontinue previous iPhone models.

I'm thinking the same thing. Also, if you look at Apple's typical manufacturing time-line, I bet his last action was signing off on the hardware releasing this fall.

IMO, this is a big indicator that hardware releases next year will be as much of a radical departure in design as iOS 6 to iOS 7 with someone else taking that on in replacement.

He had a hell of a run envious of any valley exec in the business. I'm sure he'll take a good vacation into the rest of the year and look at investing and buying into board seats beginning of next year.

A. We don't, and B. that's why I didn't name anyone and used the appropriately vague "the appropriate" when describing which heads should roll if it doesn't have a retina display.

Maybe no retina display because the retina versions in the lab don't measure up yet. I can think of three possible reasons.

(1) Battery life implications. Apple has set expectations of great battery life, and the further expectation of getting better each time. If the retina display causes a serious hit to battery life, it needs more cooking time to solve.

(2) Production issues. I don't think anyone will argue that the iPad Mini will sell a LOT more units than the Nexus 7. If Apple can't get the production guarantees needed, it's not going to launch.

(3) Thickness. This in a rational world would have not impact, but given the flack Apple took for a thicker iPad when it went retina, I can understand Apple being gunshy on it.

Sounds very weird to just unceremoniously remove somebody's bio from your main website especially if that someone happens to be Bob Mansfield.

Hopefully this isn't another security breach and if it is even more hopefully Apple is aware and they are rebuilding stuff left and right ;)

@markgurman: Apple intriguingly not responding to questions regarding exec Bob Mansfield's bio disappearing from website. Very unusual.

To me, it suggests that something happened this weekend and Apple will make an announcement tomorrow.

By removing his name today, the announcement won't come as a total shock to investors tomorrow.

In what universe is Apple not responding to questions "intriguing" and anything but Standard Operating Procedure?

I dunno seems a bit odd that they wouldn't confirm Mansfield is still with the company if he still is.

The departure of someone like Mansfield is announced with a formal press release. It is not something Apple would announce over twitter.

If they could remove his profile from all Apple websites over the weekend (checked US and UK) they could've just posted a brief blurb that he has decided to leave or whatever and that more info is forthcoming. Besides Bob Mansfield could have postponed his departure until Tuesday or whatever to give Apple time to communicate - that's normally how things work at that level.

So this is all very weird.

Oh for sure. But if 9to5Mac reached out and Apple basically said "no comment" then that must mean he's leaving.
