What are you talking about? He was already leaving so no, it's not a big deal.

You must have a short memory. No, he was not leaving. Short history lesson: awhile back, a year ago to be exact, he decided he was going to retire. It was an event that was well known and was going to be well orchestrated; no surprises. With the executive shake-up, Cook then convinces him to stay and not only piles on even more responsibility, but also a great benefit package. In no way, shape, or form was he leaving again after what he just agreed to do. Given his past actions, leaving again would have been a planned maneuver and this disappearance wasn't.

Maybe no retina display because the retina versions in the lab don't measure up yet. I can think of three possible reasons.

(1) Battery life implications. Apple has set expectations of great battery life, and the further expectation of getting better each time. If the retina display causes a serious hit to battery life, it needs more cooking time to solve.

(2) Production issues. I don't think anyone will argue that the iPad Mini will sell a LOT more units than the Nexus 7. If Apple can't get the production guarantees needed, it's not going to launch.

(3) Thickness. This in a rational world would have not impact, but given the flack Apple took for a thicker iPad when it went retina, I can understand Apple being gunshy on it.

As is always the case, we don't have any hard facts about the next Mini, and for all I know it does have a Retina display. Everything you pointed out might be true, but if it is, then that's the problem. Why does Apple's #1 competitor have access to screen technology that allows for a device that is nearly as thin as the Mini; doesn't include a reduction in battery life over its predecessor, and has around double the pixel density of the Mini? What is Apple doing that prohibits them from doing what Google appears to have done with ease? Again, Apple could announce the Retina Mini tomorrow as far as we know (and this entire discussion is moot); however, if it's not in the works, then yeah...Cook needs to be firing people.

No, then the board needs to fire Cook.

Is this the guy behind retina-esque Macs? If its true, how sad.
rMBP is one of the strong reason i switch, and as the verge said it is a georgeous display.

Late Steve said, once you go retina, you dont want to look back :)

My guess is he is leaving to avoid the coming storm with their removal of the dedicated GPU from the Mac Book Pro.

:D

I'm Speechless!

True. If a concern about margins is going to put Apple in the position of releasing inferior products, then the company is doomed...and that would be Cook's fault. You cannot come out ahead in a competitive market if you don't even realize you have competition. Capitalism means you don't get to decide what your products are worth, the consumers do.

But if we're being fair we wouldn't even have this discussion until the fall, and that's only IF a retina mini wasn't announced. Apple has never been about being first.

Most people here have way too little knowledge of Cook to realize that your answer is the best option. Cook has NEVER been a product person; he has ALWAYS been about margins. This is true now, and was true back when he was on the board of Nike defending the Nike sweatshop scandal.

People on MR bow to Cook purely because he's Steve's successor, not because they know his history or how he runs the organization.

He's been told to say that Apple is "laser focused" on products, so he has repeated it ad nauseum... nevertheless, people here still buy it hook, line, and sinker.

I would be interested in MR staff running a poll to see how people about the direction of the company, categorized by how long people have been forum members (new ones are often crazy zealots that tend to pretend they know everything, but fall of the forums with time).

He's probably just stepping down from SVP leadership to focus on hardware for wearables until he rides out the remainder of his contract, especially if they need 100+ engineers to make iWatch come to market quickly (and before his contract ends).

This.

If you're going to make a splash in wearables, put your best hardware guy on it before he leaves next year.

I love how without any explanation they just removed his page from Apple's website, it's like two 14 year olds breaking up on Facebook.

If you're going to make a splash in wearables, put your best hardware guy on it before he leaves next year.

But why does he need to step down as SVP of Technologies to do this? When the position was created especially for him last year, and Tim Cook said that team had "ambitious plans".

That's what I said in my previous posts; however, I have the sick feeling we won't be taking any of this back.

Another Apple exec bites the dust. The turnover increases, and the churn keeps the angst flowing among the underlings that are doing the work. Cook get's blamed and the very foundation of the corporation takes another hit. A thrill a minute... Apple continues to reverberate.

Oh... and not to forget the Apple apologists as they continue to declare it's no big deal... yeah ok.
