In my company (which too is a large corporate) when someone is put on "special projects" it usually means they're on garden leave and are leaving the company. It's only used for Senior Figures to save face

IT'S ALL DOWNHILL FROM HERE FOR :apple:!

..iOS 7.. Bob Mansfield leaving.. Scott Forstall fired.. Steve Jobs is no more :(

Don't worry.

If this boat sinks, then James Cameron will just make a movie about it, and your heart will go on!

Too many special projects in Apple

First special project was for Scott and now it is for Bob. Looks like Apple has interesting array of special projects!

Perhaps his job is done. The new department heads are in place. Things may have gone smoother than originally thought when Scott was removed and everything shuffled.

its never a bad idea to keep some experience around when your making big management changes.

If all went smoothly he has most likely told tim I'm done and gone a year early. Moving him onto special projects allows him to keep the deal he was given.

yep. just happened at my company.

this isn't a bad thing. get some new blood in there. Bob's DNA is engrained @ Apple. the good he contributed is not lost, but now enshrined.

Fed up?

Probably has nothing to do with money. He might have voiced his displeasure with the glacial pace of the latest Iphone to that tower of energy and imagination, Tim Cook.

Special Projects = iWatch

He may be on his way out - but my guess is he's been moved to work on the iWatch first, which we know is an important 'special project'. The first truly new product without Steve Jobs in the frame.

Since Apple doesn't make anything new anymore (using other companie hardware in your sistem is not your work really) they decided they dont need development team anymore. They would just sell overpriced 3years ago technology at premium price and will rolle in billions (exec suits) while putting developers at low wage.

The things that apple can't do(off course they can't, because your 10 million exec suit members have no clue about technology...and Apple is to cheap to hire good engineers), other companies can. Apple can't put retina on ipad mini.....but Google can put retina like display on nexus 7. Apple cant put bigger display on iPhone....but samsung, nokia, htc sure can....and are successful with it.

p.s. don't get me wrong..i am angry because i wanna stay in Apple ecosystem and want to buy iPad mini, but for the life of me can't see me spending "premium device price" money on yesterdays tech (A5 chip, subpar screen resolution), while at the same time i can get way betters spec (retina display, 1080p res, better processor, 2G of ram, more SSD flash storage) for like 100 euro less!

Cook getting rid of all SJ guys ?

If so, does Cook really think that the last results (Samsung surpassing Apple, lack of strong decisions causing rumors of suppliers changes every months, iOS7/Mavericks didn't win unanimous support, the iPhone5 stuck will and old iPhone 4 design, small screen, no retina for iPad Mini while most of cheap chinese tablets have one...) will be solved this way...
Maybe Apple should replace Cook

Right on the money :) Good post.

You're mistaken. Scott was a "Special Advisor". He didn't have any projects. In fact, he probably didn't get to do anything. (And specifically, he didn't get to do anything for any other company.)

I believe all this was planned for Bob. He wasn't going to be around in a major position for all that long. At least Apple is getting something out of him before he goes into a well deserved retirement.

I smell troll but I'll bite.

Cook is not getting rid of anyone. Mansfield wanted out and Cook convinced him to stay.

iOS 7 and Mavericks aren't released yet so they are not supposed to be getting any kind of public support.

We don't know if there's not going to be a retina iPad.

Lack of strong decisions? What's that supposed to mean anyway?

Samsung didn't just surpass Apple. They always were ahead in worldwide smartphone sales.

For all we know, this could've been in the works for a while and whoever is in charge of the website just got wind of the order to take Bob off of the exec team section.

Exactly. Remember that he was going to retire and was offered a lot of money to stay. He was needed for a specific role over the past year and perhaps that's been accomplished so he's stepping back.

Tim Cook at WWDC 2014 "We at Apple have been working hard on this for the past -number of years- and it is with pleasure to announce... The iWatch.

That's the "Special project"

The Apple doom's clock made of Flexible metal, bendable batteries and tiny zephyr glass..and...ipod cpu.

maybe ...and laser focus him as a captain of JOBS Yacht

I liked Bob, he seemed like a really interesting and honest type of guy as far as what he was showing us from his videos and descriptions of Apple products (as much as can be interpreted via film). It's a shame to see him step down more, but one can do great things for only so long before wanting something new to do.
