In my company (which too is a large corporate) when someone is put on "special projects" it usually means they're on garden leave and are leaving the company. It's only used for Senior Figures to save face

If Apple will continue like this...
no D-Gpu on Pro Laptops,
no upgradable Gpu on its dustbin PRO,
same Ipad idea slimmed ad hysteria..everywhere..
double down on hype...
products like iphone c,5s ad libitum...
i see some one else ..in need to save
the spaceship campus , its inhabitants
and its garden inside
from emptyness......

With your negativity, I suffer for those who surround you

Cool, but where is iOS beta 4?

Relax

IMO, this is nothing more than Bob needing to "take it easier". The guy needs to slow down. Maybe even working from home? :apple:

----------

I believe all this was planned for Bob. He wasn't going to be around in a major position for all that long. At least Apple is getting something out of him before he goes into a well deserved retirement.

Bingo. :apple:

I'm saddened to hear this, but since the announcement, I have noticed that Safari seems snappier...;)

Maybe the guy just wants more time for himself and family. I don't see that as a demotion. Seems like he has earned it, both professionally and financially.

I suppose if Bob Mansfield wanted to retire last year and was talked into coming back, he might now not want to be in an executive position at all now (which for him might be the "boring" stuff) but lead a smaller team that works on one specific product. "Reporting to Tim Cook" means there is still nobody above him other than Tim Cook himself.

Apples rot from the core.

Wow, you win a prize for the most surprising, most novel, most never heard of insult to Apple ever! You are a genius. An inventor. You are truly a giant of mind who can be an inspiration to all of us.

(For the reading impaired: I'm being sarcastic).

Why all the negative?

This is a simple pass the torch moment in wich the grown ups let the kids take the initiative and associated leadership, with some supervision.

Nothing sinister here me sez.

You know - some of the personal comments about Bob Mansfield are disgusting in this thread and those that made them should be embarrassed for themselves.

Whatever the situation - it's between Bob and Apple.

Just wow.

Don't even dare say that...my grand has just passed away...
leave my family outside your..opinions...

stay with your level in topic..don't touch values such important.

I never mentioned your family, you did.

Having said that, my condolences.

What the what the what?!

Sorry, but Apple's SP's/SVP's/etc have been all over the map. Who is heading retail after Johnson and now Browett left? Cook? Ive is managing iOS and OS X software development AND product design?

Seriously Apple, get your **** together.

NOW I get why the iPads' edges are so uncomfortable. This guy has fat hands, the sharp edges probably just squish in like a pillow. The edge discomfort probably never entered his mind. I have thin, large hands and those sharp edges are horrible to hold! I have to use a soft case on my iPad.

Get a thin guy in there to design an iPad EVERYONE can hold without discomfort. :D

Fat jokes ... really? Shame this got so many votes up, really says a lot about some MR members.

maybe he does not like the current design trend

You're holding it wrong.

You seriously find holding an iPad uncomfortable?

In my company, when someone goes into a Special Projects position, that means they are about to get fired.

He has to work full time on the new new Mac Pro (Now with PCIe!) He doesn't have time to be an executive anymore.

But in this case, that is not what it means. Good try.

Yes, Cook is heading up retail. No, Ive is not managing software development. Craig Federighi is the SVP of software engineering. Ive is simply involved in the look and feel of software. That is very different than managing software development. Calm down!
