ARM is freely licensed, very good for low power applications, and it's possible to get one done fairly quickly by licensing RTL and doing their own physical design.
Maybe it's going to be an all-in-one TV and Computer. But how will it be mounted? Or maybe it has a built in stand?
There are different kinds of ARM licenses. Their licenses for various soft and hard macros (for generic embedded and cell phone CPUs) are reasonably priced. But an ARM Architecture license, which allows you to modify the ISA and/or create your own implementation, is very rare and expensive (very likely well over $1M).
Seems that right about the time Apple made a big investment in ARM, ARM also announced that they had sold an ARM Architecture license to a company that did not want to be named. Who could that be? And why would they pay that much for a license to highly customize an ARM CPU if they weren't going to use it in a product which has unique requirements (e.g. not a cell phone or netbook, for which ARM already designs CPU macros)?

hmmm...
Ive been saying that Apple will do a tablet for the past 6 years.
How many people think it's going to be called iPad!!
let's take a vote!!
So you're waiting for January for to told when later in the year this tablet will be released. lol
size. perhaps both
OS. phone. I"ll bet money on it. this device seems to be the answer to the netbook (with other 'devices') and the phone os covers more of the likely functions. plus already handles both wi-fi and cell data. plus multi-touch/touchscreen
as for the early announcment. it does make some sense. content with be a big factor in this thing taking off. and if they tip off content providers it will get out. this way the rumors are cut off. the buzz can build and content is likely to be ready in larger amounts.
my only hope is that any 3g is optional and unlocked and the video is 720. that can it can use my apps I bought for my phone.
If they don't hurry up and release the damned thing, no one will care about it except the ever enraptured media fanboyz...

If they are planning a tablet for Jan. 19 time frame, then that would make sense if they wanted to make a big splash with a super bowl ad with a reinvented "Think Different" campaign as rumored in a previous post. What better way to reintroduce that campaign than with another groundbreaking product like the mac that was introduced with the now famous 1984 super bowl ad.
There seem to be lots of tablets coming out. Maybe Apple got the rumor started to distract competitors into building them while they work on something else, LOL. I have a feeling it is going to be a very high end tablet, whatever it started as. Maybe you will be able to watch live TV as long as you have a WiFi connection and a subscription. TV, movies, and periodicals seem to be the main targets for this device. It surely is a general computer as well.
I saw a tablet PC at Fry's (I can't find it on their website or on the internet, haven't been back) about a week ago. About 13", running Windows Vista, for about $450. In the little time I played with it, it was not bad at all, pretty snappy response. Not that I want ANYTHING with Windows on it ...
I saw the Archos 5 tablet at BestBuy, but the darn thing was not powered up.
Yeah, but don't you get free kangaroos?
HOPEFULLY, Mac OS X (TOUCH) and not OS X (iPhone & iPod touch) inside. Hopefully Intel (and not ARM) inside. Hopefully, full compatibility with the Mac produoctivity suite (read Apple Keynote and Microsoft PowerPoint). Hopefully video-out and USB 2 ports. Hopefully, no more than 300 to 600 g. Hopefully, pocketable. Hopefully, THE ULTIMATE PRESENTATION TOOL.
