This is a prediction from Gene 'Comedy' Munster, right?

Who's Gene Munster? Any relation to Herman, Lily and Eddie?;)

Yeah, this thing has been "coming out in a year" for about five years.

Well, according to Grandpa Munster, it's supposed to run the Godot variant of OS X. Until Apple officially announces a Tablet (iPad?:D), I won't be holding my breath.

This is a product that i'd like to know officially is coming.... otherwise, i'll be spending money elsewhere.
I can just picture the scenario that ensues:

S. Jobs calls T. Cook in a panic! "Tim, we have to get media all over this right this second and let the world know about this product. Word on the street is that TraceyS/FL is about spend his money elsewhere!!!!"

Get over yourself. They've got 30 BILLION in the bank -- I don't think they'll announce Jackshiz until they want to.

The arguments against an Apple cell phone were pretty compelling too.

Also, Apple would never release an iPod without a click wheel.

And video on an iPod makes no sense, it only complicates the device.

Nor will they ever release a head-less consumer Mac.

In reality, it's only a matter of time before Apple releases a brand new product type, whatever that may be.

So we shall see.

Oh Yes! How long this rumor is living ?

And, how long until a product with similar (more or less) will be released by Apple ?

Do not hold your breath until then.

In the mean time, can those pesky "journalist" stop giving false / misleading / angry maker news?

And if it *could* handle photoshop, it would need a color screen. Which means as a reader it would have a much shorter battery life than a Kindle.

Can someone name just *one* function that such a device could do better than an iPhone or a MacBook.

C.
why do you think it will not have a colour screen? why would the position a product inbetween the iPhone/Touch and the MacBook, both with colour screens, and expect anyone to buy one?

they aren't trying to take over the eBook market with this - unless they've done a deal with google and that's the reason why google is fighting with amazon to grab the digital rights for all books.

anyway, i'm going to get one of these if it comes out - i just want to be able to play Eve Online with my fingers and touchscreen

What's it gonna be? A MacTouch! And we do need it!

to all of you who brought the argument that there is no need for a product that fills the gap between the iPhone and the MacBook. I think there is.

please allow me a prediction from all we have heard and read:

apple's next new product will be spectacular, it will define a new category of products and it will cannibalize neither the iPhone business, nor the MacBook sales. it will be the next, the fourth pillar of Apple's success.

it will be a MacTouch.

- a 10 " tablet, nine times the screen size and resolution of the iPhone, resembling the iPhone from the looks an being roughly as thick
- thus immediately working with every existing iPhone app
- combining everything from the iPhone (3G, WiFI, Bluetooth, AppStore, iTunes synching) with everything from the mac (iLife and iWork will work with new preinstalled specialized versions for touch control) - OS X Snow Leopard is the key - that's why they focus on performance.
- it will be touch controlled with a large visual/virtual keyboard, but of course the existing sleek Apple wireless Keyboard will work immediately using Bluetooth
- it will have 1 or 2 (micro)USB-ports making it the ideal device for storing, presenting and basic editing of photos and videos while on holiday, for watching videos with the family (for eventually it will be possible to import our DVDs in iTunes just like our CDs ...)
- it will have a front camera and microphone for video-conferencing or for putting your face into games or for making fun photos with photo booth
- it will be THE new gaming device for groups, playing all the famous board games on a screen large enough lying in front of you and sitting on every side of it (like chess with touch control and animation)
- it will be THE new book reader (though i have some doubts concerning readability in sunlight and battery life when compared to e-ink devices like the kindle), especially making it possible to produce "books" with integrated video and sound content
- it will have a stand to work as a notebook screen when typing with the keyboard or to use as small display to watch videos or digital tv or for presentations (maybe a protective cover doubles as a stand when flipped over ..)
- it will have a bluetooth remote control, reasonably good speakers and - hopefully - a SD-card reader built in
- it will be gorgeous, lightweight and affordable without being cheap and crappy like the windows netbooks
- it will be priced between the iPhone/ iPod touch and the MacBook - let me guess: somewhere between $ 499 with 8 GB and without iWork and $ 799 with 32 or even 64 GB and including iWork
- it will be THE product to present your creative work on the go, to watch video and photos in a group, to work on documents with basic editing while sitting in the bus or on the plane, to check and write emails and much more
- we will be allowed to use our existing apple software on this product without an extra fee
- it will work and synchronise with iTunes on a PC, thus being the entrance to the real mac world for old time PC-customers (they simply will want to buy an OS X-system next time a new notebook or desktop will be needed)
- it can be used like the iPhone, but it can't replace it (because of size), it can be used like a MacBook but it can't replace it (because of lack of keyboard, processing speed, lack of large storing space, limited display resolution, limited connectivity)
- it is simply the perfect companion in between.

- it will be revolutionary
- it will be presented in a special event this summer by Steve Jobs, celebrating his return to the public
- it will be available in time for the holiday season

what do you think?

To make up nonsense.

One one hand there are compelling reasons to have a desktop computer. Large screens and keyboards and fully featured applications.

Then there are compelling reasons to have a handheld device. Portability coupled with an interfaced designed for a tiny screen.

But the real question is - Is there a compelling reason for a device in the middle? Other than wanting to look like Yeoman Janice Rand?

What do tablets with 5"-7" screens do better than other devices?
There is book reading, a la Kindle.
and ...er... that is it.

Unless Apple can also create a world-class note-taking device, I don't see a business case.

And to deliver world-class note-taking, you have to outclass one of the best portable devices on the planet: A pad of paper and a pencil. And that takes some beating..

C.

When did the MacBook get down to under 3 pounds? Oh wait, it didn't. When did the MacBook get touchscreen? Oh wait, it didn't.
When did the iPhone get a faster processor and full background processes?
When did the iPhone get HD playback?
When did the iPhone get a full office suite?

All of these things are possible and very useful for $500-$700. Basically everything I use a netbook for, with touch screen and the Apple Touch.

iProcrastinate…sure. C’mon Apple…time to market…at least that’s the drum our execs beat. I’d think that the vast storehouse of R&D knowledge within Apple’s labs would create the synergies needed to bring devices to market more quickly. Evidently we’re not at that critical mass yet.

iPromise…nope. Tight lipped Apple hasn’t promised anything. It’s the fan base that does all of the speculative/wishful promising on behalf of Apple. So in this vein, iPromise an 8”, hybrid OS iPod touch-like device with one USB port, Bluetooth for input devices and stereo headphones, and a dock (synching, power, KVM) for $600 - $800 by the end of Q3 09. Oh, and iPromise to all of the girlfriendless, there will be a solution…there will be an app for that!

I dont know where apple is getting the "poor user experience" thing from netbooks, everyone I know with a netbook loves them.

A touchscreen netbook would be better, but that doesnt make a regular netbook a poor device. Plus the price of a touchscreen netbook would ruin the appeal of getting what is nothing more than a gadget, a $700 gadget is a toy for the rich not the mainstream.

Keep in mind misinformation abounds prior to WWDC. It could be Apple are waiting till 2010 but I don't believe it.
Then again I've been saying a tablet is coming for 2 years now so what do I know.

I wonder if Apple is researching folding OLED screens. That would be cool.

As long as the substrate (the base material) that the OLEDs are printed onto is flexible, then folding OLED screens are entirely possible. Prototypes already exist.

what do you think?

You lit some up... didn't you? *cough* *cough* :D

Logic really refutes the conclusions by the analysts. Taking several factors into account, including the iPhone 3.0 OS, the fact that Apple has already purchased thousands of 10" touch displays and the WWDC in June, I'd really expect the tablet device in June this year, not next year.

Oh... Those were for Jobs' new house, didn't you read? :D

MUST HAVE:

- 400 g weight or less. The less weight, the better. Hint: the MacBook Air is too heavy.
- Small. If possible, pocketable. 7-inch better than 10-inch. Hint: the MacBook Air is too large.
- Open and edit Keynote and PowerPoint NATIVE presentations.
- Full blown presentations on videoprojectors (VGA-out is a RE-MUST).
- At least one USB port for a remote control like the former Keyspan and now Presentation Remote Control

Remember: this device is NOT for heavy work on it, but mainly as a pocketable device for presentations and casual editing when you are rehearsing and reviewing your presentation.

It can be done with such small pocketable size, yet being a full-blown computer. Check out OQO model 2+ (but with Mac OS X inside)

Next Apple moves will be Books and Games…
http://spidouz.wordpress.com/2008/09/03/next-apple-moves-will-be-books-and-games

Can Apple deliver? We need thousands for our University. The price is not a problem. But we need it light and small.

I was holding off to see what Apple announces if anything at WWDC. I think I'll just stick with getting a Dell Mini 9. I figure it'll be an iPod touch but bigger. Not worth it

I got my Mini 9 in November and loaded OSX on it. Never had any problems with it or regrets. Great little machine.
