This is something I've been thinking for a long while as well. If they bundle this with MobileMe for basic 3G (or even 1x/EDGE) cell access to email, iTMS, some select sites (wikipedia, to take a page from Amazon's book, and maybe a news site who is paying Apple for the placement, some limited version of a social networking site - Facebook or Twitter, etc) and leave complete internet access for WiFi only, it would no longer compete with the iPhone as a mobile internet interface, and still be a great additional tool for people with cell phone data plans. While I have ZERO desire to pay another monthly fee, a reasonable annual fee (~$100?) would be more palatable.

I agree. I am ready to buy IF the tablet has something new to offer AND does not have a redonkulous monthly cost. If AT&T allows me to share - or add for a small monthly fee like $5 - I can consider it. If it means another $30, that may be a deal-breaker.

I am off work on Wednesday, so I'll be at my Mac anxiously awaiting details with my credit card out - just in case.

For this device to use OSX, OSX will have to be ported for ARM and redesigned for multi touch…as well as all current applications.

Apple did have OSX running on Intel for years before the switch, so it is not improbable that they have done the same recently with ARM.

Just sayin'.

Let me apologise in advance for this, but I really hate the concept that a device that doesn't run 'basic mac '(i.e. OS X) desktop applications is a toy.

Why, in the name of all that's holy, would you want to run a desktop application on a 10" screen that's controlled with your finger? It doesn't make any sense, applications MUST be built around the OS and input methods available on a platofrm, it's why Windows Tablets are all crap (and trust me, that's from experience) - it's a compromise that brings no benefits for the user and almost always results in a worse experience that a mouse and keyboard that the app was designed for.

Now, on the concept of it being a 'toy' - bollocks quite frankly. Is it a device for professionals? No, but again no 10" touchscreen device is going to be, the format has built in limitations. If you want to run apps like that for the love of god buy a laptop with a nice big screen, keyboard and mouse/trackpad. However if you're a normal home user that browses the web, watches movies and creates content with stuff like iPhoto and iMovie instead of Photoshop and Premier then it could be perfect. Make the apps super simple with enough functionality to produce good results and target it at home users. Give it enough local storage to not need a host PC to sync with. Make it trivial to find apps, music, movies and publications. Make it instant-on and require virtually zero maintenance. Hey presto, the first true consumer computer.

exactly...make it run ilife and able to dock you phone to it....and i'm in

Major fail by Steve Jobs and Apple.

Jobs aint going to go out on a blaze of glory like everyone was expecting. He will crash and burn just like Apple's stock value when this white elephant gets released.

Yeah it looks cool, but quite frankly the device is going to be a nightmare to use. type on, view and carry around. Its like another Nintendo Wii, everybody wants it, but nobody actually uses it except the odd game with your Gran on Christmas day. FAIL FAIL FAIL!

I have seen the future of computing and its this:

Calling it a failure before we even know what details is pretty silly.

Well people on this forum seem to be taking the rumors at face value.

IF the iSlate/ iPad is as described then I suggest that it will be a white elephant.

cool! I always liked the design of the original iPhone.

Will greatly look forward to this upcoming event and hopefully a tablet!

The iPhone and the iPhone 3GS look almost identical from the front. Looking at the Original, as you turn the device to look at it from the side and on to the back of it, I believe it is a lot sexier than the current 3GS version and I'm surprised that people are hoping that Apple doesn't keep the same anadized aluminum that they currently using in 95% of the products. It's an amazing look.

But, if we're being practical, I think a better surface for the back would be rubber as it's going be laid down a lot. perhaps the tablet will have the same rubber feet that's found on Apple's Pro laptops. I think that would be fine although I'll probably just keep a small piece of suede leather in the case to put the device on when I'm at a coffee house showing off my new toy (ha!)

Those who are afraid that they'll be no Wi-Fi just because some goomba didn't mention it in some made-up article (most likely): need to ask yourself the question "would Apple be this stupid?" The answer is no. There will be Wi-Fi. I can't be people have to wonder on this. It's offered in the all laptops, the iPhone and the iPod touch... how would it not be in this showcased deviced that supposed to do everything. Stop worrying.

Less than a week... can't wait.

I'm going to laugh if Steve walks out on stage and the first thing he tells everyone is, there is NO TABLET!

Then goes on to tell everyone that the iSlate and iPad is an induction charger accessory for charging the iPhone and Macbook wirelessly.

The tablet became the iPhone, and it was/still is a great product. This just seems like making something for making's sake.

My friends and family who own a Wii use it quite regularly. In fact last night I was slaughtering opponents in Mario Kart.......which is the norm for me.

I was agreeing with you until the Wii part.

we really need a screening process for signing up to mac rumors...

you know...to keep out the trash.

like maybe a skill testing question....such as 1+1 or somthing.

Built in connectivity (ala Kindle) had better be there. The last thing I need is yet another $60 a month data plan. I have enough of those already.

You are setting yourself up for disappointment if you think lifetime wireless is going to be bundled into the tablet's price. It's one thing to offer included wireless w/ a b/w device that doesn't sport a modern browser, quite another to expect it for a bandwidth hungry color, video capable multimedia tablet.

Agree being force to spend $60 on another data plan is a non-starter. That is why I'm sure Apple will sell it full price w/ no wireless and wireless carrier(s) will also have a subsidized model w/ 2 yr. contract.

Boy I don't see a Grand ($1,000) in this! Sure hope Apple supplies some better ear buds then these pieces of crap! They are long over due for a change. Cmon Apple come out with some decent ear buds that everyone can use that actually fit different size ears and are comfortable.

Lastly, I hope that wi-fi is standard
and other wireless connections optional.

Well, pretty soon we all shall know!--)) ;)

All the hardware rumors don't really interest me. I just don't think it's very important.

The software is what will make or break this device. I hope Apple can lauch it with an excellent suite of apps with functionality that is intuitive and impossible to attain on other devices.

Why, because you dont agree with me?

Get a life brother...

re The Wii, I think the Wii is great, the trouble is I never really play it, I don't know anyone that really does that often unless they are hosting a party or have a few friends round and are bored. When I first played it I was blown away but 3/4 days later my arms ached and I was bored. I can see the iPad/iSlate being exactly the same. Maybe great at first, but when are you really going to use it???

I wait with bated breath.

No, the iPhone is the iPhone. The tablet will be the tablet. They will not compete w/ each other, they will complement. The iPhone is a fantastic device, but it falls short in many areas. It may not be for you, but seems there is a lot of excitement for the tablet so there must be a market. If a demand exists then it's not making something just to make it or me-too-ist. If that were the case Apple could have put out a giant iPhone 3 years ago.
