I wasn't sure which was funnier: your post or the MS video.

Both deal with imaginary products.
But, next week the iTablet won't be, and the MS tablet will still be a futzed up design concept in the bowels of MS's myriad corporate structure.

The iPod & iPhone were design concepts at some stage in their development process...

The 3G and 3GS casing is really easy to break. I doubt it would work on that large of a case.

I wanna see some crazyass new rubber type material around the edges. Roughbook but with apples asthetic touch..

If it does turn out to be flattened version of the iPhone, I'll be sorely disappointed. They had a chance to make something totally new and they copy the design of another product?

In a perfect world, the device would have only one button: On/Off, and a power port if needed - preferably wireless charging akin to the WildCharge system.

If its like the leaked Images

Seriously, if the Design is in fact a blown up iphone like in the BGR Fotos, i will puke!! Still i think the Design will differ from that, since there is totaly NO need for an earspeaker.

It is Apple, leaders in industrial design of consumer electronics. If they really screw this thing up design wise its going to harm them brutaly -> so they WILL NOT SCREW IT UP

I can´t wait no more. I will now think about not going online for the next 6 days up until when the event is beeing livecomented.

I love how the rumors are now the reality. Only 6 days to go and everyone starkly certain is running on water. It's funny how people are already convinced this thing doesn't function or have a goal market.

...ok.

I am interested to see what they come out with but I am almost certainly going to wait for the first revision of this product.

Well unless it is ATT exclusive it will have to allow tethering. Further, this is going to be good news for VOIP since the OS of the tablet will have to allow for multitasking. I can't imagine that while reading a book or taking notes I couldn't load up Safari or some other software to check up on something. Hopefully that's part of the new iphone OS 4.0, background and tethering capabilities. Now if only VOIP could be integrated directly into the iphone or tablet calling capabilities as Nokia does we would have a mobile revolution on our hands.

VOIP is already somewhat there (there's several VOIP apps already). But if the revolution you seek involves a significant drop in costs to make 3G-like calls via a 3G connection, I wouldn't hold my breath. That's exactly what AT&T, Verizon, etc do NOT want, which is why this Tablet is not going to end up with some kind of 3G special plan priced well below current 3G plans. They are not going to want this Tablet to end up being the best deal in the U.S. for making fully mobile (3G) calls- VOIP or otherwise.

I can imagine a Tethering deal for existing iPhone people, but I could also see that becoming hack-city, meaning it would quickly be hacked for all devices (laptops, etc) tethered use. More likely, I imagine a dedicated SIM with either:
  • a one-time setup fee for iPhone people to link the Tablet to their iPhone contract deal (use one or use the other but not both at the same time), or
  • a modest extra monthly fee to add this to your existing iPhone contract (comparable to adding a second phone to a cell phone contract)
Note that both have a cost, though the former would be just a one-time cost, while the latter amps up the monthly revenue stream for AT&T. On the flipside, the former limits usage to one device or the other at any given time, while the latter would make both devices (3G access) usable at the same time. Along with an option for no 3G functionality (wifi/wimax only), I very much suspect something like these options for existing iPhone people that want to add a Tablet.

But I see no possibilities for consumers to score a big win via 3G VOIP at the expense of the monopoly Goliaths of AT&T, Verizon, etc. They know very clearly where their bread is buttered.

If the screen is closer to 10" as has been rumored then it is the size of most other netbooks. In that case I think people do in fact run word processors on them. I personally can't see this being a product to replace a laptop if it can't run some sort of Office or equivalent. Products are usually successful if they replace products, such as the iphone replacing a phone + ipod. People generally want less things to carry around.

If it's nothing more than a more powerful itouch/iphone but still requires a desktop/macbook to sync and be used on the side then it better do a good job of convincing people they need a third product.
That's what the rumor of iWork on the tablet is for.

Couple things:

This is simply a mockup someone made in 3DSMAX. It's fodder for the masses.

I sure hope this includes a USB port. Leaving one out would be anticompetitive for those of us who would prefer to use 4G at this stage. I don't want to have be a customer of both ATT and Verizon, especially for slow internet and a machine that will be intended to operate in the cloud.

One would think this would be a good time for an aTV refresh given all the games and apps that could be scaled to work on aTV (using ipod touches or iPhones as controllers - or something). Seems like a no brainer. aTV to aTablet to iPhone to iPod.

Why, because you dont agree with me?

Get a life brother...

re The Wii, I think the Wii is great, the trouble is I never really play it, I don't know anyone that really does that often unless they are hosting a party or have a few friends round and are bored. When I first played it I was blown away but 3/4 days later my arms ached and I was bored. I can see the iPad/iSlate being exactly the same. Maybe great at first, but when are you really going to use it???

I wait with bated breath.

This was a pretty bad attempt at an analogy to prove a bad point.

The Wii is extremely successful. You might not play it a lot, but the point is, you BOUGHT it. And so have millions of other people. Remember the first few Christmases that the Wii came out? You couldn't find them anywhere. They were flying off the shelves. If this tablet is sold at even half the rate of the Wii, it'll be considered very successful and Apple's stock with continue to rise.

A lot of people seem to be throwing out this notion that there's gonna be "no use" for such a device. That a laptop can do everything this is gonna do. But think about the iPhone. Couldn't you just have a basic cell phone AND a laptop for games and internet access?? Of course you can. But millions of people don't do that. They get the iPhone anyways, even if they have laptops and other cell phones already.

Even though people don't need, doesn't mean they don't want. So if this has enough of the "cool factor" (which is what I think will be the selling point in the end), and serves a distinct purpose (ie. e-reader, multimedia, games), then this tablet should be pretty successful.

Like many others have said, if it requires any kind of mobile network contract I would lose interest immediately. However, if there was an option to buy airtime as required, perhaps on a month by month basis, through Itunes and on a network of your own choosing, then for me that would be perfect.

Well, there's two ways I see this:

1. It could be fake... because it's running a full-blown version of OS X and it only has a dock connector and a headphone jack.

2. The dock connector could be used to connect it to a dock of some kind (which, knowing Apple, would probably have one USB port and a power connector, and maybe they would use the iPod component video cable for video out.).

I just can't see Apple releasing something like this, running a full version of OS X, and having no connectivity. That would be plain stupid.

it's a concept.

Dude! It is a mockup!

And i think there is NO way it is running anythin other than Touch OS 4.0.

(like u can see in my signature if u do not belve it;-)

You are setting yourself up for disappointment if you think lifetime wireless is going to be bundled into the tablet's price. It's one thing to offer included wireless w/ a b/w device that doesn't sport a modern browser, quite another to expect it for a bandwidth hungry color, video capable multimedia tablet.

Agree being force to spend $60 on another data plan is a non-starter. That is why I'm sure Apple will sell it full price w/ no wireless and wireless carrier(s) will also have a subsidized model w/ 2 yr. contract.

You are not understanding the concept of the kindle or possibly the Apple tablet "free 3G" connectivity.

The 3G service is not incorporated into the price of the device, it is incorporated into the content. So every download from the app store, music store, movie store, etc will have a small transmission fee payment sent to the service provider that Apple partners with.

The Kindle has Whispernet which is provided by Sprint. Sprint gets a payment every time someone purchases an ebook.

The Apple tablet will be a content device, the price of 3G connectivity will be built into the content price. If you download a movie via the tablet 3G then part of the purchase price will go to Apple and part of the purchase price will go to Verizon.

Most likely this type of connectivity will be limited. To have full connectivity you will need to access the internet via WiFi or tethering to a 3G phone.

This would be a really cool way for the consumers! I would love it that way but with all them Smartphones out there killing the Networks anyway just imagine a million or so iPads floating arround downloading MOVIES!! Like that is going to work.

Boy I don't see a Grand ($1,000) in this! Sure hope Apple supplies some better ear buds then these pieces of crap! They are long over due for a change. Cmon Apple come out with some decent ear buds that everyone can use that actually fit different size ears and are comfortable.

Lastly, I hope that wi-fi is standard
and other wireless connections optional.

Well, pretty soon we all shall know!--)) ;)

You know what Apple's solution will be for the ear bud problems? Simply stop including them with ipods, iphones, etc. To Apple, most people probably use their own preferred headphones anyway, so why loose profit share by including better/more expensive headphones? Those who really want Apple branded headphones that are of decent quality can spend 80 bucks on the Apple in-ear phones.

Obviously I am with you - I do think Apple should be including better quality headsets, but from a cost/benefit perspective, I wouldn't be surprised if Apple completely drops the headphones in future consumer devices.

I would like one. These laptops can be so damn heavy at times. Tablet is much easier to read in bed. Plus the bed sheets wont over heat. And it's much more discreet to have a tablet. The MacBook would be so bulky in a restaurant, and I wouldn't need a magnify glass while browsing the web on the iphone.

So overall, I think Apple will reinvent the tablet. You'll just need to get used to holding it, like a phone. I know my girlfriend could slip this in her purse too. Although she's on vacation now and I'll be slipping something in her when she's back anyway.

Go tablet!

That is probably why the rumor is that Verizon would be the provider who partners with Apple. Verizon has the largest 3g network, is currently rolling out 4g, and has a lot more bandwidth capacity than any other carrier.

One of the advantages of CDMA is that it has a larger bandwidth capacity per cell tower. One CDMA tower also covers twice the radius over a GSM tower. This allows Verizon to cover a much larger area with more bandwidth and fewer towers.

True, but Apple kept them secret until they were ready to go into production - which they then did.

Microsoft has a long history of launching "vaporware" to create FUD in the marketplace, then never actually bringing it to market once it performed it's purpose of killing off whatever threat they felt needed squashing.

Anyway, I'm going to wait and see what happens and judge it on it's actual merits, not the pre-release speculation and hype.

According to the report, the device looks remarkably similar to a concept rendering published early last year but with even more similarities to the iPhone beyond those depicted in the rendering, offering buttons and other features nearly identical to the iPhone 3GS.

If true then it's exactly what many people have been predicting. And in my opinion, utterly undesirable.
